According to the BW devs Liara isn't female. Since Male Shepard can't be gay...Liara can't be male either.
...So technically. Liara should be called it then right? Why do the characters in the game call Liara her, she and daughter? All words you use to describe females.
Liara's not a female. So Liara's just an it. Why do people insist on calling Liara by female gender pronouns?
Liara's an "It" Right?

Liara is a zhe.
EDIT: In all seriousness, people use 'she' because Liara looks - in human terms - female. Additionally, seeing as all Asari are capable of birth, while they are monogendered, they are female. It is simply that they are not part of a sexual binary like other species in ME.

"while asari have only one gender, they are not asexual like single-celled life—all asari are sexually female" Galactic Codex: Essentials Edition 2183 and it canon unless contradicted otherwise by higher canon.

You're right ryz. And it's so annoying they gave her, sorry, it, those funny bumps on her, sorry, its chest. Why try and mess with our heads and confuse us like that? Lull us into a false sense of security, making us think she, sorry, it, might be female? That's just, I don't know, cruel or something.

Well I Liara says she "is not exactly a woman" so that could mean Liara isn't female or she's underage I suppose *ponders*

Liara can be called by 'she' because SHE has the characteristics of a female: womanly curves, delicate traces, the voice of a woman, she can give birth, she's intelligent, and the list goes on.

Darn translators
Maybe there's a translation error going on.
Makenzieshepard wonders if the translators can understand mongolian.

well the reason they call her a she a her and a daughter is because it and child are too impersonal and don't carry the same feelings of attatchment so the translators alter it this just the same as calling EDI an it we call her a she to help humanise her.

Oh dear gods!
All Asari are female!
They randomise genetic material with other races to avoid pure blood breed.

Generally, most of the races in the galaxy refer to Asari as females, which can be heard through numerous NPC's in Mass Effect 2, and in the first game as well I believe.

The codex states that all asari are technically female so there you go.

It's hard to say, they are supposed to be a mono gendered race and since they can mate with both male and females it seems impracticle to refer to "Asari's" as females or by the pronoun "she" but it should be noted that "Asari" always call thier offspring thier "daughters". It's a very complicated isssue.

Strictly speaking since Asari only have one gender the concepts of male and female don't apply to them, but it's just simpler for the other races that do have males and females to refer to them as female, even if it's inaccurate. Sort of how a human might refer to a pyjack as a space monkey, it's not really a monkey but it's close enough.

Her sex may be ambiguous but her gender is obviously female.

But that's just the thing. The Devs made Liara's species. I can understand the "everyone in the galaxy calling it a her because it is more comfortable to say." But it is still not a female since that's what it's creators said.

They're female because they have maternal instincts and can give birth.
On a relationship with another species, they are always the female, because other species can't birth asari kids, so the asari are always the mothers (and the offspring is always asari).

Of course.
That's why they call her "she" all the time and have the codex call Asari an "all-female race".
