Asari are mono-gendered - meaning ONE gender, not NO gender. The codex refers to them as "an all-female race", and explicitly states that they're not asexual. They don't just look female, they ARE all female.
While asari don't have concepts of male or female as we understand them - in terms of gender roles - sexually they are all still female.

That's only from the perspective of outsiders that have concepts such as male and female, having only one gender an Asari wouldn't really think of themself in terms of male or female they simply are Asari.
But asari refer to each other as "she".

Why would matriarch mean anything to them but not patriach? They're not female. Not according to the devs who created them. If patriach has no meaning in their language neither should matriarch. Yet for some reason it does despite them not being female.
The devs should've changed that so Shepard at least called them it. I don't want to offend them by inncorrectly calling them female (even if they do it to themselves so some boggling reason).

I don't care what some of the devs bring to the table for excuses. The codex says it, they have ******, can have children, are always referred to a females, and have female voices. What is there to discuss?
Gender has no meaning or definition to Asari, but that's only because they know no other gender in their own kind. It's a cultural thing. To the rest of the galaxy however, they are distinctly humanoid females with blue skin and tentacle hair.

But the Asari referring to each other in female pronouns makesno sense. Especially given Aria's whole "patriach" has no meaning in our language.

You have to take into consideration that the devs came up with this blue space babe idea and worked up from that. There's a lot about the asari that makes little to no sense. I don't think anything will satisfyingly answer this gender question, particularly with how the asari relate to one another.
The asari are, however, a fairly adaptive race. They seem to have adapted to their contact with other species quite well and it's possible that they use these words for ease of understanding.

Or are they? To a Turian they look like blue Turians, to a Salarian they look like blue Salarians, I think they're actually some kind of hideous mutant freak hiding behind a false image forced into the minds of the weaker minded races of the galaxy to make them see what they think is most beautiful.
And I would happily fall under their sway. >:3

No.
I don't think most humans's idea of beauty involves a squid head.
The asari are just what they look like.
Those three guys from the bachelor party were just doing lip-service to their own species.

Isn't the whole asari aren't female or male thing just a way for a female shepard to have not lesbian sex? Because they weren't allowed to have a homosexual relationship in the first game or something
That argument was used, yes. But I don't think many people fell for it.

Have you been checking for those naughty bits, Jade?
Another question that could be asked is why have the asari and humans evolved in similar ways, from a physical perspective? Human women and asari share a lot of physical characteristics. The likelihood of that happening without contact is very slim.
