That's only from the perspective of outsiders that have concepts such as male and female, having only one gender an Asari wouldn't really think of themself in terms of male or female they simply are Asari.

As has been said, she's definitely a 'she'

Asari are mono-gendered - meaning ONE gender, not NO gender. The codex refers to them as "an all-female race", and explicitly states that they're not asexual. They don't just look female, they ARE all female.

While asari don't have concepts of male or female as we understand them - in terms of gender roles - sexually they are all still female.

But asari refer to each other as "she".

Correction, our translators convert what they're saying to "she," that just means that's the closest word in the English language to what they're actually saying.

But Seryna called Nassana the B-word once, and that means a female dog.

Again, translated into English **** is the closest to the original context of the insult used, unless you think they have chihuahuas on the Asari homeworld the word **** wouldn't be a part of their actual language.

It's a mix between them being a mono-gendered race (i.e, all female), the human perception of gender, the translation of the asari language into English and the fact that a bunch of humans created the asari as a sexualised alien race. Take your pick. ;)

But the Asari referring to each other in female pronouns makesno sense. Especially given Aria's whole "patriach" has no meaning in our language.

Why would matriarch mean anything to them but not patriach? They're not female. Not according to the devs who created them. If patriach has no meaning in their language neither should matriarch. Yet for some reason it does despite them not being female.

The devs should've changed that so Shepard at least called them it. I don't want to offend them by inncorrectly calling them female (even if they do it to themselves so some boggling reason).

Well we don't know what they're actually referring to themselves as since we only hear English because of the translators. Come to think of it, a better question is if we're only hearing English when aliens speak because of the translators, how come their lips are clearly forming English words?

They are female.

I don't care what some of the devs bring to the table for excuses. The codex says it, they have ******, can have children, are always referred to a females, and have female voices. What is there to discuss?

Gender has no meaning or definition to Asari, but that's only because they know no other gender in their own kind. It's a cultural thing. To the rest of the galaxy however, they are distinctly humanoid females with blue skin and tentacle hair.

You have to take into consideration that the devs came up with this blue space babe idea and worked up from that. There's a lot about the asari that makes little to no sense. I don't think anything will satisfyingly answer this gender question, particularly with how the asari relate to one another.

The asari are, however, a fairly adaptive race. They seem to have adapted to their contact with other species quite well and it's possible that they use these words for ease of understanding.

Or are they? To a Turian they look like blue Turians, to a Salarian they look like blue Salarians, I think they're actually some kind of hideous mutant freak hiding behind a false image forced into the minds of the weaker minded races of the galaxy to make them see what they think is most beautiful.

No.

I don't think most humans's idea of beauty involves a squid head.

The asari are just what they look like.

Those three guys from the bachelor party were just doing lip-service to their own species.

Isn't the whole asari aren't female or male thing just a way for a female shepard to have not lesbian sex? Because they weren't allowed to have a homosexual relationship in the first game or something

That argument was used, yes. But I don't think many people fell for it. :P

Yeah, but it's more fun to debate it in terms of the rules of the Mass Effect universe, not the rule of "It is because Bioware says so."

Have you been checking for those naughty bits, Jade? ;)  Since they're an alien race, there's no guarantee they're going to share the same traits as human females. Even though they do share a lot... but details... >.>

Another question that could be asked is why have the asari and humans evolved in similar ways, from a physical perspective? Human women and asari share a lot of physical characteristics. The likelihood of that happening without contact is very slim.

Hideous eldritch abominations, I'm telling you, we only think they look like humans but underneath that facade all the Liara romancers out there just romanced Cthulhu.
