in response to the original question it's complicated

In terms of physical sex Asari are neuter but resemble females
In terms of Asari psychic sex Asari are hermaphrodite and all other species are male

Asari are normally considered female because that is the closest approximation (i.e they look female and always take the female role in intimate relations with other species)

If we're going to look at it in those terms, the asari fill both the male and female role since they're initiating the reproductive process, as well as receiving it. My fragile human concepts are crumbling under that. >.>

Personally, I still consider them female.

Liara looks weird. Alot of asari do and it is not cos they are blue...wait that rhymed...anyway, Shiala in ME1 was pretty hot(less so in ME2), Shaira and Nelyna as wel...hell even the sari stripper in ChOra's Den was alright, but liara looks like a 10 year old kid with a 20 year old body in ME1, she just looks retardedly ugly in ME2, and she looks 16 in LOTSB (which is fine since Im 16 as well). But still, don't see how people find her attractive...maybe they are deviants?

They're considered female because, biologically, they are female.  They have sex organs, but only of one type.  They conceive and bear children.  That ain't "neuter".

And IRL, species can be all female.  They do exist.  Here are two that exhibit behaviors very similar to those asari have in the games.  Namely, pseudo-mating within the species and without, respectively:

I'm not seeing how you think she looks like a ten year old. Sure, she has youthful features (not to be confused with child-like) but I think that was chosen to represent her more innocent nature. For ME1, at least. Of course, attractiveness is very subjective so there's no point in arguing about it. I find myself liking these characters for their personalities more than anything. Aria, for example, her demeanour I just find quite alluring. It's very different from Liara's but I don't find it any less likable.

The initial reason that i liked Aria was cause she reminded me of Aleena (Better luck next time anyone?) and she looked quite hot (yeah, yeah not exactly most mature I know) although her description of her life makes her seem like a matriarch...a really young looking one. I didn't really like her personality but then my friend pointed out I was like a male version of her...without all the power :(

ROFL. Nice pic. But I also meant with shorter hair..hmmm I'm probably not selling it...well it is just my opinion. I think some teenage girls look like 23 year olds so maybe I do need glasses.

That asari problem is truly confusing.

When you talk to Liara in ME1,I believe she says something like "asari don't have genders,at least not in the way you would understand". Then again,I think Codex says they are all female. We also know they get pregnant by mind melting,so I fail to understand their physiology. And they look and sound like human females, but does that necessarily make them female?

God,I have no idea what I just said,I'm confused. I hope BioWare explains this in ME3.

How does this look like a 10 year old?

Further more, how can you compare a blue space alien who is female, has the body of a  women in her twenties, and is over 100 years old to a real life 10 year old girl?

I just can't see the logic in such a comparison!

It's rather simple, in Asari terms they are just simply Asari. Since they have only one sex they have no need for any kind of gender names Males and Females.

I said in terms of physical sex - they ONLY reproduce in terms of Asari Psychic sex in which they are both male and female.
What manshep does with his genitals has no bearing n whether Liara gets pregnent or not

No they still aren't "both male and female".  There is no self-fertilization involved.

She's talking about culture, not biology, in that conversation.  "Male" and "Female" as gender roles aren't something they really think about, because for most of their history as a species, they had no reason to.  A relatively "masculine" asari like Matriarch Aethyta isn't seen as such by them, nor is the Consort seen as "feminine".  They're just two different asari with two different personalities.  At the same time, in biological terms, they are both females.

I.e., it's one word, female, with multiple, distinct meanings which are dependent on the context.  Nothing unusual about that: that's true of most words in most languages.

Her sex is female.

Her gender is null because it is a concept of sexual and social identity among species with two sexes, eg humans.

The terms have different meanings. Sex is what parts you have, gender is how you self-identify. An all female monogendered species means just that: They're all female, and don't have a concept of gender roles because... they're all female.

That gender being female. >.>

If they were neither gender, they'd belong to a non-gendered species. If you don't have separate genders, why define yourself with one at all?

They don't, hence all the confusion among people who use "sex" and "gender" interchangably.  Granted most people do this, but in the technical sense - or especially in cases like these, they're not the same.

Like didymos was saying...

Sex: Male and Female
Gender:  Masculine and Feminine

If your species only has one sex (female) then it wouldn't make sense at all to have concepts of masculinity and femininity as they are based in what society views as the typical differences between how the sexes act and appear to each other.

That question was largely rhetorical. :P

But, yes, people are confusing the two and trying to argue it as separate issues is becoming somewhat muddied by the confusion now.
