So I am buying companion armor, but it doesn't show up in my inventory. Does it automatically equip those items to my companions or is this some type of bug?

yes, it just upgrades their armor so you won't see it in your inventory.
you should hear the level up sound and see some light around your companion when you buy it.

when you select a companion in the inventory screen you'll see 4 bars below their armor set, everytime you upgrade you'll see one turn white and there are 4 upgrades for each companion

Plus the benefits are different by the types. Some companions get a lot of sockets. Some do not. Just like any of hawke's armor with sockets, the companions with sockets will show up when in the Enchantment window. There is an addon someone made to be able to instead have the companions equip normal armor that the player could. It's only for the PC users though.
