Hey Bioware community, I'm currently in my final year of University and I am studying the hows and whys of people becoming emotionally attached to video-game characters. I've mainly been focusing on Bioware titles and was hoping that you guys could help test my findings.

All I ask is that you fill in a very short questionnaire about the romances available in both Dragon Age and Mass Effect games. If you need anymore information about myself or the dissertation, please feel free to contact me at:

tonylowis@gmail.com

Rest assured that everything is confidential as I have asked for no names. If you have played both Dragon Age games and Mass Effect or if you have played multiple different characters in one game feel free to fill out another survey.

Thanks in advance and have a good day!

Edit:

I've closed the second survey so I can work on analysing the results. Thanks again for your great input! It really speaks volumes about the community on these forums. I'll post some results here when I'm finished analysing them.

Done! If you feel comfortable with displaying your results, I am sure that many people around here would be interested to read your take on this aspect of video gaming.

Also done. I'd like to see the finished product as well, if that's okay.

Done. Good luck with your dissertation.

However, regarding your intent, your survey seems rather vague, because it is possible to answer all of the questions without indicating the player's emotional attachment (if any exists) to the character.  I have to wonder: was this intentional? i.e. Are you gathering data direcly from the answers themselves or from what the answers indicate about the player's emotional investment or something?

Done.

BTW, this will be very hard to analyze with the freeform questions.

Thanks for the great work guys. I checked this morning and I had 100 responses! This will be some great data for my work.

I asked the freeform questions because I wanted to see if there was any correlation in your alignment choice to your romance option.

I'll no doubt have my dissertation somewhere online when it's been handed in and I'll post up a link here for anyone who wants to read. Thanks again!

If I had more time for testing I would sit down and watch people play Mass Effect and Dragon Age and talk about the emotions involved when playing. Sadly I can only really get answers from people using these surveys which I decided to make about Mass Effect and Dragon Age. It was an oversight on my part to forget to ask players which was their most emotional moment with the romanced character.

If anyone fancies writing their most emotional moment with your romance options I would be very grateful!

Thanks again for all your work guys!

I'll start working properly on the results later today, or if the second survey hits 100 responses. It's looking good at the moment.

My most emotional moment was I had Miranda as the Biotic specialist in the last mission and when she couldn't hold off the bugs Jack got carried away. As you can see from my avatar Jack is undisputedly my favorite character, I had romanced her and I had won her love the right way (paragon) and then she died because the Cereberus **** was too incompetent to hold up a damn biotic field. Then I found out I had no saves from before the mission started. I have never finished that playthrough.

I think the issue I ran into after playing through ME2 was the new LIs introduced were forced because they were, at the time, only around for one game. They only had one game to build up to sex. Whereas, the only romance I'll ever fulfill is Garrus, because I kinda stumbled into that one gradually, as all natural true relationships handle.

The biggest payoff will be in the third game; seeing those developing potential relationships come full circle. Tali for femsheps, Thane for malesheps, both were heavily implied and because you cannot romance them as the same gender, you're left with growing the friendship. Relationships are nothing without a friendship foundation.
