My favorite way to start an encounter:
Back away from the enemies, have Morrigan AOE them as they approach, then mind blast them in place. My whole group runs back out of range except for Shale who hits them all with quake. As soon as quake is over my tank runs back in to taunt. And the group begins focus firing from there.
If the enemies are more spread out, I open with a group sleep, horrify one and just start focus firing the others.
Just curious to hear of other strategies people have come up with.
Cheers.

On my second play-through - with a Dalish Rogue, I've started to use the bow a lot more. I open with Pinning shot on one opponent, then my main and my allies rain arrows on the other side until they close the distance to melee range. Depending on starting distance I can bring down one or two opponents before they can close.

My tactic depends a bit on the environment - insoors the tactic is a tad different from outdoors.
Outdoors i will zoom the camera out as far as i can, and then scroll towards a group of enemies. Indoors i will place my enemies in hold mode and have them move to the sides of a door i wish to pass. If you open it enemies won't see you meaning you can place AoE's(Note, as you might know they can be placed trough walls).
Following that i cast an blizzard at the maximum range where it will still hit 1 enemy (To have enemies run trough it as far as possible). Then i place an earthquake and then inferno and whatever the electric AoE talent was called. At the same tame Elwynn places an Earthquake (when i cast blizzard) and after that a grease patch - possibly followed by a ward of paralysis.
Most of the times that whacks every singly mob in the room as they are slowed, frozen and knocked of their feet while the AoE eats their HP. If some survive or there was was just a short distance between me and the group i just throw a fireball which knocks them right back into the AoE. After that its mostly mopping up. Same goes for most bosses, except that these survive with about 2/3th HP in which case i just petrify them and have my melees and mages nuke them. 2x petrify, 2x knowdown and 1x cone of cold pretty much equals permanent stun if they connect. If not my mage end up running circles tailed by a mob while every other character uses basic ranged attacks on it. Its great fun to see an ogre chase you in circles while its slowly being killed.

In most encounters I hide my party at an ambush site, then use stealth to get my rogue into position for an archery hit on an enemy, when they start to follow I run back to my party and take them out. This generally pulls 1-2 enemies at a time. For variety sometime I have my party stay just around the corner and I sneak in an backstab a mage, then release the party to come help. I usually have Alistair tanking with aggro on and Morrigan freezing/ paralyzing anything in reach. Zevran is also sneaking and backstabbing.

Favorite opening move with my PC mage was to charge at large groups of enemies and then cast Cone of Cold.
With my current PC warrior, I like to lead off with a Shield Bash or some other immobilizing ability.

If in open terrain, switch everyone to ranged weapons, concentrate on one target (mage first if there's any), kill, repeat until opponents get in melee range, then greet them with a cone of cold. Ranged weapons may not be the best at dealing raw damage, but they are certainly useful and powerful when used in the right conditions.
Indoors, I usually play with 2 rogues, so stealthing them behind the enemy before my warrior runs in is also a favorite tactic. Occasionnally goes horribly wrong if there's a trap I didn't spot

Ummm ... Once you get that drake armor you can fireball/inferno yourself repeatedly and just watch everyone die. Esp. if your PC has 500 hp!
In general, I try to blizzard/fireball the mob as it approaches and run around a corner. My fighters take out anyone coming around the corner. If enough make it through that they get close to the mages, Morrigan casts Sleep/Horror/Nightmare to pretty much nuke them.

If the enemy group contains mages they get hit with petrify (then stone fisted once I'm done with my immobilizations), crushing prison or force field (if it comes down to that), right away since they're the most dangerous opponents.
Other than that, I generally send Alistair in first to draw aggro and then force field him when he's surrounded. Then I shatter and crushing prison as many enemies as I can. Finally, I activate my Arcane Warrior Abilities (+other buffs) and go in with Leiana to take out the remaining enemies. I leave Wynne in reserve in case there are any unexpected developments. Most of the time alll the enemies will be dead before Alistair unfreezes.

I don't know if they are my favorite but I use these tactics a lot to open battles...
1. hold everyone back, sneak attack with bow to draw an enemy and lead him back to the party.
2. If there's a mage I sneak in behind the mage and stun her and just start stabbing away... until my sneak fills up again.. then I sneak around a little to get all the baddies off of me.. and go back to the mage and repeat until their dead. Then I call my party in. That tactic is pretty satisfactory ..

IT all depends on the ammount of crowd control I need to do. If the battle involves a smallish group (not more then 6) then my PC will either cast Prison or Paralyze on the elite / spell caster while Wynne or Morrigan puts the rest to sleep.
Then have everyone attack the same target usually thier caster / ranged support goes first followed by the grunts then elite/boss last.
If the battle is larger in scale, I'll cast blizzard to "pull", making sure that any thing coming towards the group needs to run the blizzard guantlet and risk getting frozen. Mele party members kill anything that makes it through while ranged members (casters / Lelianna with a bow) takes out the frozen mobs.

I play with minimal crowd control - so it's usually earthquake from wynne, then blasting the enemy with arrows and Fireballs, then charging in alistair to finish them off.

Minimal crowd control? Fireball is crowd control...And cooking!
As for opening moves, I'm fond of using glyph of repulsion to channel enemies into certain approaches, or to break up archer formations, as the case warrants. Control the battlefield, and you control the battle.

I like the way you think.
You might want to consider layering Blizzard and Inferno along with Death Cloud....
Spellpower in this game just makes squishy things a lot more squisher.

Blood Wound.
Enough said.
No honestly, that is amazing for starting fights with multiple enemies.

Well I don't know about you guys but I just kick down the door and charge my way through. If I need to rethink my strategy I use whatever method seems best in the current situation.

You walk up and, using your most smarmy voice say
"Do you clean your clothes with windex? Because I see myself in your pants"

I run in, use the champion move that lowers attack and knocks back, then taunt then that other move that knocks back but costs health (from the dlc), by that time morrigan's aoe has killed quite a few of them
or in some occassions when that doesn't work I reload run in with my tank run out with my tank and place him in front of the door and take them out one by one as they try to pass
