I would prefer Shepard to survive the events of ME3, but considering that the ME trilogy is supposed to be Shepard's story, I would be content with Shepard having a heroic death and any future games set in the ME universe to tell the story of another character.

If the consequences of my Sheps action culminate in his death so be it. But if all roads to lead to them dying well then that's a problem.

If the story leads that way I'm fine with it. I do kind of like the no happy endings bit but some stories seem like they'll turn out ok then bam the character dies and you immediately are like wtf! and not in a good way. If the story leads to a bitter sweet ending I'd be just as fine with that the only ending I really can't buy would be the happily ever after ending where somehow shep and all crew are fine like we got at the end of ME2 that all crew survives ending was unrealistic and it's crap they even allowed it to be an option. During my 1st playthorugh I got two people killed and that was because I choose Samara as second fire team leader because she was very capable of the job but BW didn't' think so and then oddly enough Legion died because of me choosing her? But two deaths on a SM was still very plausible and believable then the all lives one.

I don't think a "happy ending" will be possible in ME3. At the very least thousands of people (and aliens) are probably going to die fighting the reapers. I would like to think that a game based on choice would allow Shepard the chance to avoid joining all those that die in the fight. I really think Bioware is going to allow us to craft the end to the story. So, I hope I can have a play-through that sees Shep sacrifice him/herself to defeat the Reapers, and then I can have a play-through that sees him surviving the fight.

I wouldn't mind an ending where Shep dies, so long as she still "wins" at the end... an ultimate sacrifice ending would be real nice. I'd also want an ending possible where Shep lives of course as well.

In ME2 the ending where Shep dies is actually even more emotionally moving than the perfect everyone lives ending.... that said, I still prefer the everyone lives ending hehe.. but playing ME2 to completely kill everyone off in your squad plus Shep can be a very emotional experience.

There should be different endings, Shepard dying being one. I'm not asking too much, after all previous Bioware games like NWN:HotU and Jade Empire had different endings. But if Shepard can't survive any possible way, yeah that would be bad.

I'd like to see this ending, which could be the opposite case: Everybody on earth died except Shepard.

Not if it's unavoidable.

But if there's a chance we can die, I'd definitely do that for one of my playthroughs. I see it as a satisfying end, after saving the whole guddam galaxy.

Not if it is scripted and unavoidable. IF I want to make the Ultimate Sacrifice and I do, then yeah I'm ok with it, but not if it's decided for me.

Since ME3 is the last of the Shepard story, it's fine if he dies.

But that means no ME3 DLC for Bioware 0.0

There you have it. We want Satisfying ending.

We want ultimate sacrafice, death by choice, heroic act.
call it what you want. But that optin is needed, wanted and a litle bit expected (in a good way )

I think it would be an appropriate end to Mass Effect 3 if Shepard was in a reverse Virmire situation, with Shepard being placed in Ashley and Kaiden's position and having to decide whether or not to save him/herself.

To echo the opinion of several others, I don't mind death as an option. But to have a sacrifice as the only ending seems stale to me. It has become something of a standard "dark" ending. Couple that with the forced "death" at the beginning of ME2, and the tacky factor goes up even further. So having death as one possible ending, sure. As the only possible ending, no.

But thanks to that "death" at the beginning of ME2, Bioware has set the precedent for changing their mind and having even more ME sequels starring Shepard in the future, even if they do kill him/her off.

I think that the heroic death will be an option, an maybe even an "evil" survival, but I seriously doubt that it will be the only option. Unless we need to wait for a patch...

Yeah. I think the key factor is that there should always be choices. Personally, I wouldn't mind, but alternatives should exist for those who don't think like me.

The whole point of Mass Effect is to have each player writing Shepard's story differently.

But BioWare already confirmed that there will be multiple endings, so I believe there is nothing to worry about.

Shepard should only die as punishment for the player really f*cking up. Like in ME2, only easier to do.

TURIAN COUNCIL MEMBER: So, Shepard saved the galaxy after all. And he was even made President of Earth.

THANE: Yes, but he had to leave unexpectedly. And then circumstances forced us all to separate, all except for him and Ashley, of course...

I wouldn't mind an heroic sacrifice because my main Shepard is a hero for life, and once there are no threats left to fight, there is no meaning for him to live either. It's just RP-ing. He is kinda screwed up in the head.

So I hope this is at least an option.

I want Shepard to be able to both live or die at the end based on your choices, A scripted unavoidable death in a game so heavily focused on choice would be silly to me.

This. Just because he survives the ending of ME3 doesn't automatically mean  he has to be the protagonist in new games.

I want endings where he and friends die, and endings where he and friends live.

I'm sure Bioware will have both.

Keep him/her around for further games? No. We will have played Shepard for 3 games and are trying to stop evil sentient machines from trying to destroy all space faring sentient life in the galaxy. That is more than enough and there isn’t really anywhere to go from there. I hate it when protagonists get recycled over and over. After ME3 Shepards arc should be done and dusted.
As for Shapard dying in ME3....well it depends how it’s done. It could be good or it could be stupid and cheesy. So long as it’s done well and it makes sense I really wouldn’t mind Shepard dying in every ending just so long as the rest of the ending (in regards to everyone else and the state of the galaxy) is different based on your choices and past actions.

I don't see how.

Flowers and butterflies endings outweight endings where the protagonist dies like 100 to 1, and that's being generous.
