Some people might claim that reality is pathetic.

Btw...if the story for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was written and portrayed by BioWare, with everything else by Bethesda, it would be the best game ever in the universe.

I assume by "people" you mean one person; at least in regards to the later comment about exacting revenge against BioWare.

There's nothing wrong with discussing the morality of certain choices presented by the narrative or comparing certain plot points to their historical parallels.

It's the internet there's a lot of people in it that are just sick in the head that's all and while i may find some of the stuff i've seen in a lot of forums in a lot of places disturbing as hell is the internet as long as you ain't breaking the rules you can do and say whatever you want.

Is it just me or are people beginning to act like Mass Effect is reality? People are giving these big moral speeches about Renegade and Paragon, bringing these philosophies and historical similies into the mix to help govern their actions. They are also saying they will exact revenge upon BIOWARE by destroying the mass effect civillizations IN THE GAME and act like that affects other players.

People are also beginning to start using all these real life analogys to help understand random ass things in the game such as people comparing the Cerberus to the N@ZIS and what not which although is a suprisingly good analogy, is still going a bit far considering it's a game. But worst of all, people are personally insulting each other over what they chose to do in the game and are again comparing it all to real life and slandering other players because they didn't study historical events that seem similar to those in question in the game...it's ridiculous.

the same can be said about star trek or star wars. the truth of the matter is i do notice some simularities in mass effect that can be linked to reality.

when i play mass effect 1 and meet vigil and the whole story on the protheans i think of the mayan people who  vanished.

i believe its fair to say that the galaxy map that allows you to travel wherever and when ever hits to the reality thats what we as a real people are trying to do now. i mean heck arent we not exploring space but sending people up even if it is just the scratch of the ice berg?

imo i believe the mass effect series is a game that shows how we in real life are trying to expand furthe rinto the universe and make friends with aliens. and whos tosay making friends with aliens hasnt happened allready?

I thought it was generally a given that in any fandom there will be a crazy subset. Lord knows I've seen plenty of the course of years.

Without naming names or fandoms, so far I've seen:

People convinced the fictional character is flesh and blood real, and everyone else is delusional in not acknowledging this. Similar to this are the ones who will make a life sized doll of said character for..um...intimacies.
People convinced that they are married to a particular character and that they interact on the astral plane.
People who have taught their children to call a fictional character Mommy/Daddy upon sight.
People who's real life marriage has broken up over an obsession towards a particular character/fandom.
People who've had their children taken away or children die from neglect due to their obsession over a particular character/fandom.
People who are convinced someone else is an incarnate of a particular character and stalked them to the point restraining orders were made.
People convinced they can use a spell or something and gathered real blood/sacrificed animals to attempt to make a particular character real and be with them.
People who've threatened violence to the point of stalking/harrassment towards others who disagree with them in any degree regarding their obsession towards a particular character or romance pairing.

Of course that's what I recall off the top of my head. It's not something isolated to being a phenomenon happening since the advent of the internet since some of my examples date back to the 70s. We just see it more since there's a higher visibility since the internet.

@sympathy4saren - not necessarily true. After seeing their lack of quality storytelling in me2/da2 which seem to be just shooting/slashing galleries, I wouldn't hold my breath on that. Maybe bioware before ea, but not bioware ea.

To OP: These are the internets. There will always be people here who are afraid of ever being anything but a hundred percent right. There will always be those who needs to call others stupid to feel smarter themselves. Why they fail to see how pointless it is basing these generalisations and false sense of superiority on a fictional game world is beyond my understanding.

Yeah, I know the feeling.  I used to feel shock at coming across stuff like that and now it's more 'surprised that didn't happen sooner'.

I can understand, especially with RPGs and fandoms where there's a vividly established world that some do find more palatable than the one we're in.  Same with characters that resonate particularly strong with a person.  It's just that with some, it's a trigger for whatever issues they already had and if it wasn't one thing, it was going to be another.

I LOL'd at half of these things... If you believe some of the more outrageous things stated actually happened, I have an interesting proposition for you, it involves a good friend of mine who lives in Nigeria... Posted Image

Although I can believe some of these things may have occured - I don't trust anything told to me on forums anymore than I trust certain news outlets to give me fair and balanced reporting.

If I took this game very seriously, the 1st game would have been ruined by the space battle elevator gap in logic.

Explaination:

During the battle of the citadel in ME1, Saren locks down the elevators, forcing Shep to go outside. When he/she looks up they see sovereign, which is completely IMPOSSIBLE. Sovereign is supposed to be 90 degrees to shepard from the elevator shaft, thus making this entire thrilling sequence one huge flop in logic, ruining my gaming experience.

And don't forget the sound in space problem...

You know, I was thinking about this thread and something odd occurred to me.

Some of the top minds on our planet like Stephen Hawking are coming around to the idea of Parallel Universes.  If there are parallel universes and there are in fact infinite of these, then everything that has ever happened, will ever happen or could ever happen, is in fact happening in at least one of these universes.

Which means that somewhere out there is a universe where there's a Commander Shepard, Eezo and The Reapers.

So the question is, why not take it seriously? :D

True....and for same said reason, am probably guilty of immersion beyond healthy myself at times...Just kinda hard to fathom and really understand, someone taking it to such extremes...but you are spot on, if someones prone to that, they will come across something to trigger the event.

Yes, those all did happen in assorted fandoms over the course of decades that I did witness or did read in the news.  I can understand your wanting to disbelieve, I'd've called bullsh*t on the blood thing if it hadn't been mailed to my mom back when she was president of a fanclub and I got to open the package since I was helping her go through fanmail.

News outlets will always only give your their version or the publically or politically sanctioned version...thats a given. But given the bizarre circumstances often portrayed in human nature, I really wouldn't put it past a number of the more unstable among us.

No one cares about the real world, only a way to escape it. Is it not what we work so hard for, all our lives? Let us enjoy Mass Effect I say, however it is we may please.

I'm not averse to that, though I'm a complete layman when it comes to the subject, I understand a lot of the principles involved, but a physicist would run rings around me. lol

That said, this thread is perhaps not the best place for such a discussion. :)

There isn't a universe that has a magical substance that lets you break the laws of physics, whatever they may be, in that universe.
