Looking at the Elixir of Arcane Technique, physical technique, and mortal vessel and wondering if I were to buy all of thsoe it'd be about 70g.  Would I still be able to raise the 50g required for Bartrand?

Please no *major spoilers* on my first playthrough.

Just go ahead and buy the tomes, you will not have any problems going on the deep roads expedition.

It should go without saying that the game will not lock you into never being able to progress from Act 1 even if you waste your gold on those delicious tomes.

You're saying you don't want spoilers, but would you like a tip? Suffice it to say, even without the tip, you will get into Act II.

Just do all the major quests and you will see what happens. The tomes will carry over through the next few acts so don't worry about them

Don't buy the Black Emporium tomes and potions yet. They'll still be around for the rest of the game, unlike the normal vendors' stuff, which changes every Act.

like allready mentioned there is no need for this, you will still be able to progress to act II so if you want the attribute/skill/spell -points earlier then go ahead and buy them

Some people don't want to use Dougal for RPing reasons. Some people buy other items and end up short even before buying tomes/pots. Some people don't maximise their gold (miss quests, etc.) and may not even *have* enough for all of them. There are plenty of reasons why one might be short of spending gold; my advice to skip the BE tomes/pots for now assumes that the player is in such a position.
