I could have saved Ser Wesley!!!

When we encountered Flemeth, they gave Wesley a mercy killing while the vial sat in the junk drawer.
He might have died anyway, but perhaps he could have survived the Joining. But no one knew anything about the ritual. Oh cruel twist of fate!
Apparently they really know how to keep a secret in Thedas.

It also requires a bit of lyrium, too, from what I remember. And that fancy cup.
Lyrium and some magic preparation or the blood of an archdemon.
Neither was handy around the blightlands I imagine.

Saving a life sure is hard outside of combat.

If Pol had still been alive, I would have wanted to murderknife him myself for that, not save him.Amagoi wrote...
And you could have easily have saved the Dalish elf Pol if Hawke was a mage or if you had Anders around.

If you have Anders around, Merrill is all "You can heal anyone, help him!," and Anders says "He's dead, what a shame."

Agreed. Some people are just too stupid to live.

I am Hawke and Hawke is me. I know, therefore Hawke should know through the power of meta-gaming!

Why is the darkspawn taint so incurable? Anders can heal all of Isabela's myriad of STD's but can't heal the taint?
Because the Maker sent it to punish people, of course.

Yeah well of course I know it HAS to be incurable for plot purposes...just seems to me that when magical healing is involved, you wouldn't be in the same situation as us mere mortals back in the Dark Ages when consumption was an "incurable" disease.
Well it's not as if the taint is a real world disease. It's an especially virrulent sickness int it's own world's story. It's a magical affliction of sorts in it's own right isn't it?

At least one nuanced character they didn't completely destroy by the end, then.

Flemeth knows how the Grey Wardens and the Joining works, but Flemeth promised to help get your family to safety in exchange for the favor. An active Templar in your group when you arrive in Templar country while being or having an Apostate in your family doesn't seem very "safe". Besides Flemeth identifies with Bethany/Mage Hawke.Jedi Master of Orion wrote...

Flemeth has no sympathy for templars in general. I doubt she would offer to help one in any case.

Death and/or dying in general in these games makes no sense as something to be feared. Magic can heal and magic can resurrect - I mean in Awakenings a guy dies from a flippin' broken leg desipte me having a both spells and potions to solve his problem.. You'd think Sebastian's family would have access tosomeone who could raise the dead then that whole thing goes away.
The lore states that magic has no power to resurrect those who are actually dead. It can bring back someone from the brink of death, however.

I suspect that Anders is just a dick. I mean... c'mon... look how he and Fenris treat Merrill directly afterwards. It's not that hard for me to think that Anders could have ressurected him, but didn't just to show Merrill how evil she is. Damn hypocrite.

yah such a secret that anyone plot dictates knows without having to be told.
face it, the "secret" is bs...in Origins, everyone and their cat knew about it.
