im all for playing any RPG that i enjoy.
i loved DAO and DA2. i loved MA1 and liked ME2.

i played the witcher and hellgate london because they both came out on halloween a few years ago. i barely made it half way through the witcher and since have tried playing through a couple more times, but never made it far. i found the move to add free DL content to a game that was already launched very classy in way of the update package.

there were things i liked about the witcher but it didnt keep me invested because the gameplay wasnt there for me.

i find it odd that cd projekt and the fanatics of the witcher (1 game), are judging biowares catalog of great games and 1 game deemed sub-par by a loud minority, based on hype of 1 un released game and the gameplay of one already released game.

if i was stranded on an island, i would bring bioware games with me.

until CDP pumps out 5 great games, they will be lower on my list.

internet media is in high spin right now and i'm sure i'm coming across as a fanatic as well but i'm also defending the creator of some of my favorite entertainment media and thats more important to me than my ego.

It's less about the game itself, it's more about the direction and stances that both companies seem to be taking.

Whereas Bioware want to focus on simplicity for a more cinematic and accessible experience, CDProjekt have been focusing on adding complexity for a deeper and more engaging experience.

Both directions have their merits, but many of the dinosaur RPG fans would rather we move in a direction that highlights the strengths of the RPG genre, rather than dulling them for the sake of reaching a bigger audience.

Though, if pressed to choose between Bioware games and CDPR games if stuck on an island....

I'd ask if I could bring some Black Isle/Troika/Obsidian games instead.

^_^

You didn't say could only bring one, therefore I will take advantage of that loophole and take them all.

I don't think many are saying CDPR > Bioware in aggregate.

There was an ongoing argument (lasting for months/years if you extend back far enough) about DA:O vs The Witcher, and then DA2 vs The Witcher 2. It's not about companies in general - just specific games.

Now that DA2 is out and seems to have been poorly received, many have jumped on The Witcher 2 bandwagon.

Doesn't mean that any of Bioware's previous titles are to be looked upon in a negative light. Just that their latest is a poor effort, in the eyes of many - and has seemed this way since the first gameplay footage was shown. On the other hand, since the first gameplay footage, most seem to think that The Witcher 2 blows The Witcher away by a mile.

ME1 and DAO were better than Witcher for me, ME2 was on par with Witcher for me, Witcher was better than DA2 for me. I cannot say about Witcher 2 only that I'm looking forward to it.

You didn't say it was a fueled plane, so good luck with your aluminum boat. :innocent:

I'm hard-pressed between Valve's lineup and BioWare's.

BGII offers more hours to sink in-between spear-fishing and weaving roofs, but Portal (2?) is just so darn fun to play...

You could tie together the game discs and use them as paddles.

I played The Witcher for two hours and loathed pretty much everything about it, but people are entitled to their opinions. I'm not sure there's any point making threads complaining about them. Although I admit that I do roll my eyes every time the CDP fans make another thread about how great The Witcher is, given that these boards are entirely unrelated to that game.

I'm going to move this to Off Topic, as it's not DA2 related.

For about 10 years, I quit playing games altogether. If I had money at the time, I probably would be familiar with the successors to Zelda, The Unreal series, the COD series and others. But I missed out on all of that.

Then I bought a pc, and a friend of mine recommended Mass Effect. I scoffed at the notion, at the 'romance options' and such, and put off buying it for a full year. Finally I bought it. I played the game for 10 hrs straight. I finished it in two weekends. I was mesmerized. I am in fact, playing it again right now, for the third time. I have of course bought and finished ME2 ( 6 times) and DA:O.

Basically, it was Bioware that got me back into gaming. Not Bethesda, or Capcom or Blizzard. They came later. I respected the company that brought me ME1 and ME2, but when I played The Witcher, I realized Bioware is missing something, and that they are definitely changing. So I'm critical of that, and yes, I'll speak my mind on the matter.

The Witcher is a great game, a game for adults, I don't care what the consensus on these forums happens to be. It opened my eyes just like ME1 did.

I think it's cute how CDProjekt ssays that they invented romances in RPGs.

Besides the obvious....

Romances? Come on now.

Well i don't know about you...but apparently liking The Witcher, Mass Effect and Dragon Age is heresay on these forums. Seriously why can't people like more then developer/company?

The reason I think CDProjekt deserves so much praise is because they aren't a big company. Witcher 1 was their first game and it was great and in a lot of ways much more mature then Dragon Age or Mass Effect was. Story and decision making wise (calm down disagree if you want) but Mass Effect really is just one of my favorite IP's ever and nothing will change it. I just like a scifi setting more. Anyways back to what I was saying is CDProjekt is now making a second game, Witcher 2, and instead of taking shortcuts they spent a lot of time making their own game engine to try and make an amazing sequel to an already great game. Also it's a PC exclusive was confirmed on Friday. Not many games are PC exclusive and I believe they deserve our support. Digital copies have no DRM physical copies have a one time activation per computer thats it. Bioware is my favorite developer I like all their games except well Sonic...come on. But even Dragon Age 2 was enjoyable but it was not the sequel we wanted and that's why Witcher 2 has gotten so much attention because people want an RPG that isn't rushed and created specifically for PC and takes advantage of the hardware and the demographic.

If I were stuck on an island i'd bring a woman...just saying Posted Image

@Bryy_Miller   CDProjekt has never said they were reinventing romances. What they have said they are showing it in a mature way and did away with the sex cards and decided with cutscenes that aren't half asses like or have dry  humping.

Hmm I'm not going to get into the whole Witcher vs Dragon Age debate, because I honestly don't see the point. I've played both, I've enjoyed both.

The Dragon Age games are my favorite games, so if I was stranded somewhere, I'd take those and play them as long as I could access the EA servers to authenticate the DLC, assuming of course that I can actually play those games offline.

I'm beginning to hate the whole "This vs That" thing going on between these two Games. (that's not directed at anyone in particular...just the situation in general)
I played The Witcher...it was fun, had some terrific Visuals, and some funny lines...also had some parts that bothered me.
I think CDProjeckt is going a bit far with all their bluster, though...
They've had a Grand Total of ONE successful original project and that took two tries to get right, so they're talking a lot of smack before seeing how their second project is received upon release.
The ironic thing: They made most of the money that has allowed them to begin producing their own Games by translating Bioware products for the Polish market.

I actually didn't really like The Witcher too much. I'm not sure why, but it really rubbed me the wrong way. I suspect that I'm just not in the target audience for that game. Which is okay; you win some, you lose some.

If I was stranded on an island I'd bring a bunch of rocks with me to make a big thing that says "HELP". And then be insanely OCD and worry about if it's straight and legible.

Assuming all other variables, though (unlimited power, a good enough computer or console to run what I want, and enough resources to feed/shelter/comfort me, and "limited internet"), I'd probably bring Fallout (actually in my typical travel bag cd case), Arcanum (also in said case), and BG1+2.

If *I* was stranded on an island I´d bring some friends and instructions on how to build an escape boat, how to hunt etc....., instead of a game I probably can´t play there for lack of a PC.

But I guess I´m just weird sometimesB)

Honestly based on how they have been presenting the Witcher 2 and many , many fan posts about the game it feels like CDproject is more interested in making porn games.

That does also raise some warning bells since many games in the past that ended about being real bad normally just threw in a lot of sex and nudity for the game to sell.

And yes before I get killed and sacrificed by the CDproject fanboys I have played the Witcher 1 and was honestly left very dissappointed by it (and yes I have played RPG's for years and years).

Visit a non-american forum.

We are happy discussing the import features, skilltrees, speculating about the story and worrying about our hardwares.

I agree with this choice. Although Fallout would be left behind in lieu of Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.

I agree with Boiny Bunny. Not because I am fond of rabbits. :P Rather, I think the comparisons are actually about the direction both companies are seemingly heading in. Depending on a person's tastes in RPGs and their views, they side with CD Projekt or BioWare. In my opinion DA/DA2 are barely comparable. The only logical points of comparison are graphics fidelity and level design. That can be approached somewhat objectively. Everything else is subjective and trotted around as objective truth by both sides; or is so dissimilar as to make terrible comparisons. One can prefer a story and storytelling style, but unless there is a glaring difference in quality, it is purely subjective which is actually "better".

For my piece, I have no opinion on CD Projekt RED based on "the Witcher". I am waiting for them to make a more accessible RPG with a selectable female character. My opinion on them is based on Good Old Games; a service I love and will continue to support. That and their "Enhanced Edition" patch for "the Witcher" speaks well of them. I am less enthused with one of their devs poking fun at competition almost a year ago, but BioWare is not guiltless in this regard either. I still remember Ray Muzyka's now ironic criticism of JRPGs

"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." - Abraham Lincoln

The true test of CD Projekt RED will be when they meet success. BioWare was in ways a mirror of them once. Will they still retain the same mission statement if GOG continues to expand, and their games catch on like wildfire? *That* is what I want to see.
