I tried to load up mass effect a couple days ago to play arrival and now I can't get through the main menu because it runs at like 1 frame/4 second, maybe 1 frame/6 seconds, around there.

I thought it might be because I had to install a non-stable video driver for dragon age 2 but after downgrading it a couple of times, it still doesn't work.

I searched online for similar problems but i must have been putting in the wrong search terms or this problem is unique to me, I'm not sure which.

You're using two 5800 series cards on a Phenom II X3? That is a giant bottleneck. Still, it shouldn't slow down that much. How many fans do you have in your case?

it's not really a bottleneck at all. Unless you are one of those people who creams over i7 CPU's anyways lol. This is Mass Effect 2 we are talking about here it's not that graphically demanding and with GPU's so involved in the process of game rendering these days the CPU is less of a factor., That CPU is more than enough for ME2 even maxed out.

As for the problem the OP mentioned what is your pagefile size? it sounds like something in the background is screwing with your game or something. Trying a clean boot might help you.

I've tried it with a clean boot, but it's still slow. Other games seem to run fine too, just mass effect is running slow. I've tried reinstalling it without any DLCs or anything as well and that didn't work either.

Also, your signature is funny.

Have you tried playing with the core affinity and running it using just two cores instead of three? sometimes that solves various problems when the unreal engine has a hissy fit.

Changing the affinity didn't seem to do anything. But I checked through my game collection for another game that uses the unreal 3 engine (mirrors edge) and checked that and it ran like crap too. So at least i am getting closer to figuring *why* i'm having issues...

Do you have Kapersky AntiVirus software loaded on your machine? Its been shown to cause problems with Unreal3 engine games. If so, get rid of it, and try something else like Avast or Comodo.

I actually use comodo, I turned it off, but it didn't seem to help any...Thanks for the tip though.

in general? I don't know, I try two or three times each time a new idea comes along, once the normal way, once after rebooting, maybe another time just because I'm too hopeful.

While ATI isnt as guilty of it as nvidia is, newer drivers tend to incorporate tweaks designed for newer games that can have adverse effects on older games such as ME2. I know it is a pain in the arse, (especially with DA2 requiring newer drivers) but I would suggest giving an even earlier revision driver a try, such as 10.5 or 10.6.
Another thing to try would be a reinstallation of DX9.0c, especially if you havent played ME2 in a while, and Windows could have purged/compressed some of the DX files after not being used for some time.

Silly suggestion: Blood sacrifice. "Accidentally" slice a finger and leave a blood smear on the inside of the case. The unholy speed of your RAM demands it.

Thank man, you were right, sorta, 10.7 ended up working. Too bad it wont work with other games.

Might be that the newer drivers have issues with Crossfire. Try disabling that if you decide to update your drivers again.
