People have been wondering, after the apparent discovery of an Anderson squad placeholder, if he might wind up as a squadmate for the third installment. I was thinking about it, and I'm wondering if it might be something a little bigger even.
What if Anderson replaces Shep as the main character of the game in cases where the import from ME2 includes Shep not surviving the Suicide Mission?
I know it sounds crazy, but hear me out for a second before flaming, please. If Shepard is dead at the end of ME2, and they don't want to 'magic' him back from the dead again, then Anderson makes just about the most logical choice for a replacement. He knows about the Reaper invasion, has been briefed by Shepard on many of the key events (and a couple quick intro scenes could easily establish a more thourough briefing Shepard COULD have given him at any point along the way), he knows, either directly or through Shepard, all the major characters who could potentially be carried over into the third game, and he should be familiar with the Normandy from his time on the SR1.
Further, assuming the novels are canon, he has resigned his post and done some things that could easily have gotten him into at least as much legal trouble from the Alliance as a surviving Shepard. This would mean that very little in terms of plot or in-game events would really have to change, they could just replace the trial of Shepard with the trial of Anderson to kick off the game.
It would also make perfect sense that Cerberus would be after him. Actually, depending on how you played out ME2, it could make a lot more sense for Cerberus to be after Anderson rather than Shepard.
Anyway, those are just my thoughts on the matter. All it really says to me is that I'm overthinking things, but why not share anyway, right?
Allright, I'm going to go throw on my fire-retardent suit and wait now...
