I just got Morrigan and she has a mage staff that throws arcane bolts. Does this use any mana, and if not does that mean it's totally pointless to get her the actual arcane bolt spell (which does use mana)? Also, if she is out of mana is she smart enough to throw arcane bolts with the staff or do I have to specifically add that in her tactics? Should I turn off her mind blast spell which does similar damage to arcane bolt, to conserve mana and just have her use the staff for free?

Thanks!

It's free. Spells do more damage and/or have more utility. Autoattack is there for when you've run out of mana and aren't willing to pot, or for when you'd rather conserve mana (e.g., cooldowns are running, the target is already very weak, etc.)

The staff is not throwing arcane bolts. Staffs have their own attack.

Arcane bot gets more powerful as your spellpower increases and is in no way useless.

Related question - she has 4 tactics slots and already at level 7 has like 8 spells. Does this mean she is limited to only using 4 spells in combat (or 3 plus a pot tactic) unless I take direct control of her? Do most people control their mage directly instead of the main character?

The game s designed for you to pause often and take manual control of all the party members. Tactics only help out.

*Nods* Tactical pausing is an incredibly handy feature which should be used on most occasions. Personally i control each of my characters manually since its quite hard to device complex tactics with the limited amount of slots available - and i rather not make a separate tactic for every situation. :)

The tactics I have on her are more about generally staying alive: mind blast if surrounded, drain life if she's below 90%, and wintergrasp when it's up etc etc.

For everything else I manually control her.
