Does Hawke not like her family?

Again and again I've been struck by Hawke's callous attitude towards her family. When her sibling dies, where's the mourning? Only possible responses are worthless platitudes and telling her mother to get over it. And speaking of Hawke's mother; why isn't Hawke's reaction when her mother gets kidnapped by a murderer, "OMFG!!!!! WE HAVE TO SAVE HER NOW!!!" Ditto for when she sees that her mother's been the subject of a sick, twisted experiement. I would expect some blind panic in reaction. And when you find Bethany after the Qunari attack Kirkwall, she looks dead. Once again, a stunning lack of concern from Hawke.

Hawke's reactions seem unrealistic to me and really detract the emotional resonance of her family interactions. I just don't get a sense that Hawke really cares about these people.

Thats your only problem with the game?

The game feels rushed to me, I should have waited for the reviews before buying :(

While I'm sure some people will disagree, I think the family relationship was treated extremely poorly in this game. Starting with the ham fisted killing of the sibling 5 minutes into the game based on your class. I also felt nothing when my mother was taken/killed because we had no real relationship (despite me trying); I know others have felt very affected by the death but to me it was really weak.

I disagree, while i wanted the option to hit the walls and tear down the whole estate after leandra's death, simply because that's what i'd do, i liked the part where my pro mage mage hawke questioned his own beliefs, suggesting that the templars have a point.
And you can mourn your siblings if you choose the right dalogue options.
It's not as emotional as one would prefer, but it's not as bad as staring at your half dead father and desperate mother with a blank face.

Thank you for this utterly pointless response.

Why, he's right - issues are numerous. Bland Hawke's responses to family issues are part of the problem.

I believe David spoke previously on how the writers are hesitant to force Hawke to emote in a certain way as many players feel it removes their agency. Yes, you think that your Hawke would weep at Bethany's loss but another person says their Hawke would never cry and didn't care about their family member. How do they accommodate both of you?

Keep in mind in the case of the first sibling's death. It's not like you have all this time to weep and cry when you are being attacked by more Dark Spawn. Just sayin. It's also not the first death of a loved one for Hawke. They lost their Father not long before that. So it's not like it's the first time they've been hit hard by such loss...

This. I don't want to lose control of my character. If they can somehow successfully make being a crybaby optional instead of acting like the guy whose shoulders kirkwall rests its welfare on, fine.

I think someone suggested, an I agree, that having the occasional sad/happy/angry face would be nice.

DG seemed to like it as an option for more additions. It's the easiest way to add more without going  too far on symbols.

I think Hawke's response to Leandra's kidnap was very emotional and believable. I could hear the tension and fear in Hawke's voice when following that blood trail. The subsequent cutscenes with Gamlen and LI/Aveline were also good.

Hawke's response to her/his sibling dying in the Deep Roads was convincing, but in the escape from Lothering, not much so. I tend to put that down to having little time to escape, but even so... I suppose Hawke may have spent those six weeks on a boat to Kirkwall mourning the dead sibling.

I just don't know why my whole family had to die. Seriously. That freakin' sucks. What you don't see is my Hawke drinking her sorrows away.

On topic though:

I felt the aggressive options during All That Remains were appropriate.

I wasn't pleased with that myself, but I see it as a separate issue.

Cheap pathos.
I was half expecting an anvil to drop on Charade and Gamlen at the end.

Agreed.  I never felt a connection to the protagonist's family (except Carver in an entirely negative  way).  What made it even worse it the overly dramatic and sobbing voice acting when chasing after your mother in Act 2.  PULEEZE. Give me a break.  It's too late to make us care about her after you're about to kill her.....and no amount of overwrought, fakey emotionism in the voice acting is going to change that.

Hawke not inviting Gamlen to come live in his / her estate pisses me off greatly. He / she could at least invite him after Leandra died.

I would love it if they incorporated this into the next game.

I already got Sandal creeping out Merrill;
"She is pretty."
"I think Sandal is watching me."

I don't need the perv Gamlen hanging around more often.

If those random dwarves can live in my house, I don't see why my own family can't. Family is family. Not like Hawke is the paragon of virtue himself/herself.
