That's pretty much it...
Everyone in Mass Effect 2 showed more emotion... and that game's a shooter with dialogue trees.

Simply role-play and say to yourself that Hawke doesn't get emotional in publc. That's how I do itMaria Caliban wrote...
I believe David spoke previously on how the writers are hesitant to force Hawke to emote in a certain way as many players feel it removes their agency. Yes, you think that your Hawke would weep at Bethany's loss but another person says their Hawke would never cry and didn't care about their family member. How do they accommodate both of you?
By having the loss of the family place in question coveniently placed just before a timeskip, so that you - the player - can determine how it affects your character.Maria Caliban wrote...

"Charming" Hawke's "At least father has company now" line just totally left a sour taste in my mouth.

That's Sarcastic Hawke, if I'm not totally wrong.

No, the tone indicator was the diamond which is supposed to indicate a charming or smooth response. I didn't find that line charming or smooth, just painful and insensitive and a bit derpy.

I use the "Kind" option there, usually. No need to be charming or smooth at a moment like that.
Having lost a sister myself, my reactions varied between anger and grief. Didn't think of being witty once in that situation.
I did tell myself though (When my mom died): At least she'll be with my sis now. Having a good time.
It helped me.

I try to keep Hawke's tone consistent otherwise they sound like they have dissociative identity disorder, but the "witty" and "charming" lines sometimes just..... eurgh....

I do not force myself into "Snarky only" or "Diplomatic only" personalities. But I understand where you are coming from.

I think I've learned my lesson about trying to be consistent. I think my Future Hawkes may just have to sound like they have dual personalities.

Does being consistent mean that whatever the situation, you'll be snarky? Not in my life.

I just don't know why my whole family had to die. Seriously. That freakin' sucks. What you don't see is my Hawke drinking her sorrows away.

Again and again I've been struck by Hawke's callous attitude towards her family. When her sibling dies, where's the mourning? Only possible responses are worthless platitudes and telling her mother to get over it. And speaking of Hawke's mother; why isn't Hawke's reaction when her mother gets kidnapped by a murderer, "OMFG!!!!! WE HAVE TO SAVE HER NOW!!!" Ditto for when she sees that her mother's been the subject of a sick, twisted experiement. I would expect some blind panic in reaction. And when you find Bethany after the Qunari attack Kirkwall, she looks dead. Once again, a stunning lack of concern from Hawke.
Hawke's reactions seem unrealistic to me and really detract the emotional resonance of her family interactions. I just don't get a sense that Hawke really cares about these people.

Well idk about you, but my Hawke doesn't care at all for his family
