Because the graphic engine is so dated that people can't even cry and emotions twist and contort the character's faces in very cartoonish manners.

That's pretty much it...

Everyone in Mass Effect 2 showed more emotion... and that game's a shooter with dialogue trees.

I had no problem with how the relationship with my family was when I was doing my first playthrough, and assumed that I liked them. Well, except Caraver, we were rivals.

But I found when I wanted to be evil/pro-templar, and wanted to outwardly resent my sister for being a Mage, I had no dialog options to support that.

I believe David spoke previously on how the writers are hesitant to force Hawke to emote in a certain way as many players feel it removes their agency. Yes, you think that your Hawke would weep at Bethany's loss but another person says their Hawke would never cry and didn't care about their family member. How do they accommodate both of you?

Simply role-play and say to yourself that Hawke doesn't get emotional in publc. That's how I do it

The way I see it, if they are going to give us a preset character, he can't possibly be a blank slate.

That goes for DA3 too, Bioware. I know you guys are giving us another preset voiced protagonist again, but don't try and make him a blank slate. Because when you give us a preset character, you are already throwing our imaginations out the window.

Just go full force with it.

I think the family was nothing more than a plot point to further the story along and give you some dilemma within the game on the faction to side with.If they wanted you to really care about them there should have been some flashbacks/story of their lives in Lothering growing up etc. Though that might be DLC later.

I too feel the dying family scene was handled poorly.

I 've seen in real life the reaction of a classmate who was just told by phone how her beloved aunt had passed away. She literally shrieked in the middle of class, then started crying uncontrollably and had to be brought out of the class by the lecturer and several friends.

Bioware should have implemented the option for our Hawke to be the hardened hero who doesn't cry, or to wail with torment at the sight of their dead mother, along with the LI hugging us to comfort us, and finally ending it off with a funeral cutscene where all the companions place a candle before mother's shrine.

By having the loss of the family place in question coveniently placed just before a timeskip, so that you - the player - can determine how it affects your character.

Basically how it was done in-game with family deaths, sans Leandra's.

Didn't bother me. When the sibling was killed by the ogre, someone had to hold it together just to survive. For sure it wasn't the living sibling. Mom was coming apart. Dark spawn were attacking. No much time to do anything but fight.

Look, I had a crappy relationship with my brother. We didn't speak for 15 years. I perfectly understand the cold feeling between Hawke and her brother. And after going into the deep roads, what does little brother do? He joins the frelling Templars, and you're the apostate mage? More reason to despise him.

Leandra (mom) was the only one you had a semblance of a relationship with, and it seemed like she withdrew into herself. Combine that with great ambition on the part of Hawke (not exactly the reluctant heroine) and you end up with what you have.

They could have made a sobby scene after mom died. Tear being shed while trying to remain strong for her while she was slipping. Then fade to black.

I definitely feel like the way the family was handled was the weakest part of the writing in the game. There were moments that actually engaged me emotionally--the moments I got to see Bethany again after she was taken to the circle, hearing my Hawke becoming more and more frantic while following the trail of blood, the scenes with Gamlen and the LIs after your mother's death--but they all would've been so much more effective if I'd gotten to know my family better in the first place. The only family character I'm really interested in is Carver, he strikes me as being more dynamic than the rest of the family.

I'd love to have an option to show my Hawke being more emotional, too. Shep being less emotional made sense since no matter what, they were supposed to be a hardened soldier, but the DA PCs really shouldn't be like that unless you want them to be. I hope they give us the happy/sad/etc options in DA3.

No, the tone indicator was the diamond which is supposed to indicate a charming or smooth response. I didn't find that line charming or smooth, just painful and insensitive and a bit derpy.

I use the "Kind" option there, usually. No need to be charming or smooth at a moment like that.

Having lost a sister myself, my reactions varied between anger and grief. Didn't think of being witty once in that situation.

I did tell myself though (When my mom died): At least she'll be with my sis now. Having a good time.

It helped me.

I try to keep Hawke's tone consistent otherwise they sound like they have dissociative identity disorder, but the "witty" and "charming" lines sometimes just..... eurgh....

I do not force myself into "Snarky only" or "Diplomatic only" personalities. But I understand where you are coming from.

I think I've learned my lesson about trying to be consistent. I think my Future Hawkes may just have to sound like they have dual personalities.

Does being consistent mean that whatever the situation, you'll be snarky? Not in my life.

No, but the purple comments are not always snarky. I thought that the "charming" options would be the purple tone's own unique "nice" comments, but I was mistaken (obviously XD)

It depends upon to whom you're speaking. Varric? go purple. Isabela? Purple or Blue with an occasional red. Anders? When he's talking about templars? Red. Avalene? some blue, a lot red. It also depends upon your character's mood.

And funny.... when you see Zevran if you flirt with him, he'll flirt, and want to go off with Isabela. You protest. Isabela says "you can come too." Aveline says "I think I just tasted a little vomit."

Yes, this bothered me as well.

Neither Hawke really cared for his lost sibling nor did I...that guy who just died was someone I knew for about 5 minutes. How could I possibly feel related to him?

I just don't know why my whole family had to die. Seriously. That freakin' sucks. What you don't see is my Hawke drinking her sorrows away.

I turned to blood magic.

...What? It's a coping strategy!

A little more time to dwell on Leandra's death and get angry about it would have been nice. Heck, that's true of any of the family deaths, to be honest.

In my first playthrough I liked that my family all got killed - it gave a reason for Hawke to change over the years. Leandra's death I was sure was because I'd decided to kill DuPuis, which made my searching for her all the more terrible as I was sure it was my fault she was in trouble.

Then I found out it always happens. Sigh.

Again and again I've been struck by Hawke's callous attitude towards her family. When her sibling dies, where's the mourning? Only possible responses are worthless platitudes and telling her mother to get over it. And speaking of Hawke's mother; why isn't Hawke's reaction when her mother gets kidnapped by a murderer, "OMFG!!!!! WE HAVE TO SAVE HER NOW!!!" Ditto for when she sees that her mother's been the subject of a sick, twisted experiement. I would expect some blind panic in reaction. And when you find Bethany after the Qunari attack Kirkwall, she looks dead. Once again, a stunning lack of concern from Hawke.

Hawke's reactions seem unrealistic to me and really detract the emotional resonance of her family interactions. I just don't get a sense that Hawke really cares about these people.
