Jade Empire is infinitely better than DA2.

I had overlooked this little gem because of two reasons.

A) I had a life back in 2007 when it came out for the PC and
B) I hate all things Japan related.

However, riding a massive rpg-jones/downer after the DA2 letdown and encouraged by really positive reviews on the web, I picked it up on Steam. It felt so good to adventure in NEW AREAS FOR EVERY QUEST!

Imagine that!

Companions written with wit! You get to travel to places! There's a storyline to follow! Things are interesting and guess what? There's not even an inventory to speak of!

So here's some comfort to those of you looking for a decent RPG fix till the Witcher 2 is out. Play Jade Empire! You'll be paying Bioware for a GOOD game, actually voting on what you'd like to see in the future.

PS Those encouraging DA2 DLC are lost causes.

Either you don't really mean you "hate everything Japan related" - or you really don't know *how* to hate.

Hate and dislike are 2 different things. Remember that.
You obviously dislike DA2.

It is not particularly Japan related. Still a good game tho.

I agree with the OP.

Jade Empire is much better than Dragon Age 2. Jade Empire is highly underrated.

Let me rephrase. I strongly dislike and feel disconnected to all things Oriental/Japanese themed. Giant tentacles, schoolgirls, deep sense of duty, slanted eyes, call me a Confederate boy, I just never got it and at my old age, probably never will.

However, the strong story and high adventure present in Jade Empire, transcends all of that. It's plain great RPG storytelling, a solid 8/10 (DA2 is a lenient 5/10, for the lores' sake.) and shows how much you can do with dated graphics, few options and a fantastic and dedicated writing team on board. Hell, it even has 1942 style mini game seamlessly blended into the action!

I'm still shocked at how good it felt to actually visit new environments for new quests, DA2 had me in permafear of future RPG's just playing out in one 2X2 bland grid with a "Level Name" changing on the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

To mention a few, JE has a compelling story, an excellent OST, and wonderful, colourful, vivid locations (there's a higher population density in the Imperial City than in all of Kirkwall), and it has even less RPG elements than DA2. To my mind, this goes to show that DA2's biggest flaw is not so much related to the game mechanics, but the aimless storyline and stark, and often repeated, locations.

Jade Empire is easily my single favourite Bioware game created, outside of the BG series.

I've never really understood why it's so overlooked among Gamers, it has an epic story, some of the most amazing NPCs I've seen, outside of the BG series, and is easily the most fun I've had since... Well... The BG series.

I still replay Jade Empire regularly, it's just *that* good. <3

Jade Empire was better than all the recent Bioware games. There is no news about that.

So we conclude:

A) You don't have a life now? (Since you suggest that all of us who played it didn't have one 2007)
B) So what kept you from playing it then? Fortunately for you Jade Empire has very little to do with Japan. Or are you actually suggesting you hate something you have no real knowledge of? For what do you hate it then? Your own ignorance?
Thats kind of sitting in a shop and pointing at a random guy who walks in and say: "I hate this guy and all his family and everyone that will be born from his stock".

Thanks. Its one of a few games created by bioware that I never bothered playing and for exact same reason that you provided.

I will certainly give this game a shot.

I loved JE for what it was.

If DA2 had been called ''Champion of Kirkwall'' I probably would've liked it.

But since it pretty much killed one of my favorite game after raping it and making a coat out of its skin, then yeah I ****ing hate DA2.

The combat is somewhat clunky, enviroments are unvaried, it outright lies about it's morality system (spoiler: the way of the Closed Fist is 100% EVIL no matter what the game tells you) and the second half of the game makes Dragon Age 2's look positively lucid.

It's a good game, don't get me wrong. Just don't expect it to be the messiah.

Hey, I'm not even American, but yes, I'm a huge opinionated bigot, I'll admit to that much :)

And I always go back to playing games when things in the real world are not so hot (Not suggesting that everyone else does, mind you) and yes, I am the person who makes fun of other people in the store. Not very noble or anything but it keeps me entertained. See Erik Cartman.

Also, Jade Empire. ****** Demon Face on the cover. Come on. The uneducated mind generalizes and makes connections. Sure, Mass Effect is so much more than generic sci-fi but that's exactly what the untrained eye sees.

And finally, yes, JE is not the ultimate RPG experience, but it's a hell of an entertaining adventure, at half of Dragon Age 2's price right now.

Ultimately it's a good, solid story, entertaining companions, feels a bit like a Lost Reel Kung Fu movie and dammit, it's 15 Euros well spent. It's simple, good entertainment with none of that nagging "When does it get better?" feeling that is ever-present in DA2.

So if you're not American why the Confederate reference?

Unless you are attention starved and are trying to stir **** up.

I'm betting it's a bit of both.

Jade Empire is my favourite game ever. Still, I don't understand what an aversion to Japanese games has to do with not playing it.
