What made it enraged in Act II and what caused it to come back to life during the Zevran quest? Or was that a second one? Was any of this ever explained?

1. I assume it was enraged because this is the area around Kirkwall/Sundermount/the Primevial Thiag, which is especially bad when it comes to magical things. The Keeper and Merrill are probably used to the Varterral in Ferelden.

2. I *think* a Varterral is a 'golem' made from stones, wind, and plants. If it's destroyed, it regrows itself.

I want to know why all the Varterrals are suddenly getting so pissed off that they'll even attack Dalish elves, the people they're supposed to really like and let pass through whatever areas they're guarding.

Dragonbone Wastes Varterral was pissed.
Sundermount Varterral was pissed.

There is something odd going on.

Hm, speaking of that Thaig... if that talking statue in Witch Hunt was talking about the "prison" being breached in reference to the Thaig, that might be connected to why both Varterrals went crazy. (the one in the Dragonbone Wastes and the one in Sundermount)

So they're immortal? That would be interesting.

Dude, I wanted an answer since Witch Hunt. There's none to be had. Maybe later.

Being immortal would presume they're alive. I'm sure there's some way to stop them from regenerating, but it's probably more complex than 'hit it until it stops moving.'

Merill says it comes back because it's "bound" there. So I agree with the not a regular living critter thing.

They're basically guardians. Not really a golem though. Merrill claims that the one there is bound to protecting something there. What it's protecting or what is provoking it? We can only speculate. But apparently they cannot rest while they are still bound to protect something. Like the one in Witch Hunt is bound to protect the Mirror possible. I would think that it would not attack Ariane on her own but since Finn is there at the very least for a non Dalish. It is compelled to fight them all. Unless it was more provoked by all the Dragon Cultists around the area.

The elves animated elements (rock, tree, wind, and rain) with some sort of spirit and bound them to protect something. That sounds just like a golem to me.

Having a possesed Dalish Keeper in the area might make it testy....

Merethari doesn't get possess until Act 3.

I am uncertain of when this event actually occurs, but that demon could be the reason it was testy in Act 1; when Merrill started becoming serious about restoring the mirror with Blood Magic. Then after the mirror leaves, the demon seems to reappear in the Keeper about the same time Zev is hiding nearby.

Or perhaps it hates Nexus Golems being so loud nearby....

Merethari only gets possessed in Act 3. If you talk to her in Act 3 before doing Merrill's quest she leaves for the demon to "stale it." She gets possessed just before Merrill and Hawke show up, apparently.

No concrete point, but I find it hard to believe that she's possessed in that conversation before she goes up the mountain.

so far we've encountered two Varterral, both of which were hostile, and heard that most are passive and even protective towards Dalish
so these two are both unusual. so what do they have in common?
Dragonbone Varterral is living in close proximity to the Eluvian Morrigan uses
Sundermount Varterral is living in close proximity to Merrill's clan, where she presumably had the Eluvian before taking it to Kirkwall with her...

or maybe the one in Dragonbone is hostile simply because at least one of your party isn't Dalish and the one in Sundermount is hostile because like everyone else in DA2 it's completely insane

Maybe it's just pissed 'cus of Merril like everyone else in the area.. as for why it's there again I think Merril explained it if u took her on the quest to kill it the 2nd time but I can't remember what she said

What was the point in Marethari asking Merrill to kill the Varterral if it was going to come back to life anyway? I was half thinking that she was hoping we'd just get killed so she wouldn't have to worry about the mirror any more, but considering what happened after that seems unlikely.

That was my impression too. If you talk to Marethari before heading up the mountain, she does say about buying you time and leaves.

As for the varterral, who knows. I had assumed the witch hunt one was agitated by Morrigan screwing around with the eluvian inside the buildings, and I'm trying not to cynically conclude the Sundermount varterral is agitated for no other reason than to add AWESOME BOSS FIGHT YEAH. It's not going so well.

Slightly curious what it's doing down there in a cave, too. You'd think the ancient Arlathan site of uthenera just up the path would be worth guarding.

I'm assuming it was supposed to respawn sane again but obviously it didn't. or at least, if it did then sanity didn't last

Coincidently enough, those are 2 places that contain Eluvian mirrors.

are you talking about when it respawns in act 3?

Actually, it does respawn sane  again.  A varrteral's purpose is to protect dalish things.    Zeveran is Dalish ...a dalish  that you're hired to kill.  And so the varterral was protecting him... from you.

I actually got that part,  even before Merril explained it to me.

Pure guesswork, but if the varterral regenerated sufficiently to animate itself again after Zevran arrives, it would've taken several years.

Unless of course Zevran just snuck by it, hid in a corner and waited to see how the antivan crows would fare against an ancient, undying guardian. It does sound like something he'd do, come to think of it.

I found it odd that the dalish elf from Witch Hunt says that the Varterral are only supposed to be legends, yet Marethari's clan regards them as well known.

The Dalish clans, to my knowledge, are not uniform in their knowledge, nor reach consensus on all things. Marethari and Merrill seem very knowledgeable in their own ways.

The real question is whether or not we will get a direct answer in future content. (I definately hope so)
