The Dalish clans, to my knowledge, are not uniform in their knowledge, nor reach consensus on all things. Marethari and Merrill seem very knowledgeable in their own ways.

Isn't the Dalish chick in Witch hunt part of the same clan   as Merril and keeper Merithari ?

don't think she is, she certainly didn't seem to know my Dalish Warden who's from Merrill's clan

she knew about tamlen.   She  takes your warden to the very same broken mirror that merril now possesses....

ariane isn't from marethari's clan but they did cross paths and that's how she learned about the mirror.

i think the angry varterral's have something to do with the statue's message in WH, the darkness is coming, or something like that, and then their's sandals prophecy which says the darkness will go away when he rises.
the codex entry for them says they were made by dirthamen to protect a place from a dragon, maybe the return of the dragons is making it crazy, maybe the one in da2 is crazy because an elf helped kill it, thus when it was born again at sundermount it was mad at the dalish

Well you know, if they are linked to the pretty mirrors in any way, having a demon trying to breach reality by abusing it's power might ****** him off.

There's a mirror in Sundermount? Aside from Merrill's shard? Given that these things were created long ago to protect something important for the Dalish, it has to be guarding something other than the shard she brought from Ferelden.

It guards it's stuff, forever. There's a codex entry of a Varterral guarding a city long dead and abandoned, still having Varterral guard it.

except Morrigan did extensive research on the Eluvian and said it is a portal to a place beyond the Fade and beyond Thedas. Meaning Audacity was trapped in that statue forever until Marethari released it thinking she was helping.

Marethari did absolutely zero research on it. Why? It took Tamlen and (possibly) Mahariel, so even though it's cleansed and safe, it's evil.

Merrill did extensive research on it, cleansed it with the only magic strong enough (blood magic. She says regular magic wouldn't do the trick), and would've eventually succeeded.

Morrigan did extensive research as well.

Wait a minute.... Morrigan, Marethari, and Merrill.... all of their names begin with the letter M! and pissed off Varterrals have been around places where they have been! That's it! It's so simple! Varterrals hate the letter M!

Maybe, but it's hinted that it's not the main function of the Eluvian, it was more of a travel-communication thingie, maybe a secret teleportation device, but morrigan pretty much uses its secret power.
And even so, if they are linked, the demon still "cleanses" it, it could still be upsetting.

I thought she suggested she could have used Lyrium if she'd had enough available?

I don't remember that part... of course, I haven't played DA2 in a while because I've had to do a lot of other really important things (wasting time on the forums being one Posted Image)

If she did though, it's kind of a moot point isn't it? She only had two options that would actually work: ****load of lyrium or blood magic.

Lyrium was out of the question because there was nowhere for her to get it. Especially without seeming somewhat suspicious (imo)

What was the point in Marethari asking Merrill to kill the Varterral if it was going to come back to life anyway? I was half thinking that she was hoping we'd just get killed so she wouldn't have to worry about the mirror any more, but considering what happened after that seems unlikely.

I kind of got the feeling that Marethari was trying to come up with the most impossible task she could think of.  SHe really didn't want to give Merill the MacGuffin, but couldn't refuse the laws of the clan either when Merill requested it.  So the Varterral was the most challenging task she could think of.  Probably hoping that a) We'd decide it was hopeless and not pursue it, or as a last option B) we'd die.

Marethari doesn't strike me as the type to give Merrill a task in the hopes it might kill her. Whether or not you believe as she did - that the spirit bound in the idol was just using Merrill to enter the mortal world, possessing her in the process - Marethari herself certainly did. I can't fathom why she'd willingly sacrifice herself in such a way if she was trying to get Merrill killed earlier.

I wonder if Marethari expected something like what happened with Pol. she knew Merrill, with Hawke's help, could handle the Varterral, knew there were still some Dalish in there, maybe alive. hoped that Merrill would see how terrified they were of her, how distant she'd become from her clan, and that she'd return to them and give up the blood magic and mirror

sort of. I doubt she thought Pol was still alive in there. She definitely wanted Merrill to give up and return, especially after seeing how afraid they were of her "bringing back the taint" from the cleansed mirror. And even if she did return, the clan would've still been afraid of her. And then what? Marethari just goes, "Oh I lied. She was never at risk to bring back the taint."

Then the clan might distrust Marethari as well. Really everything Marethari did and said had no logic behind it. But, she did it out of love which is the only thing I can say was good, even if she was an idiot.
