Is Dragon Age 2 really that bad compared to other BioWare games?

As long as you're not expecting a masterpiece you should be able to enjoy the game.

It's low on the BioWare scale, which means above average compared to other games out there.

I agree. It's below par for bioware but it's not a bad little game, albeit way overpriced originally.
The missed potential is saddening, I agree with that as well.

I have my worst 3 (DA:The Awakenings, NWN:SoU and Icewindale 2)
DA 2 stands in middle, leaning towards lower ranking.
Edit: As you asked Baldur's Gate (I only played 2 Throne of Bhaal or something like that) DA 2 is better than that game.

Icewind Dale (1 & 2) was never Bioware titles... they were made by Black Isle / Obsidian.
That said, good to see someone who appreciated J.E. It's one of my favorite games as well, and seemingly very underrated by the community at large.

FYI Black Isle/Obsidian/InterPlay/Bioware where all at one time one company or in bed together Black Isle/Interplay went the way of the doodoo bird (cant remeber why) and split into Bio and Obsidian as i recallFabianGrey wrote...

When it comes to Bioware games I played nwn with all its expansions, DAO with Awakenings and the Mass Effect series.
Not that many actually, but I've played a lot of other RPGs over time and I have to say, personally I like DAII least. The story has a lot of potential, but it fails miserably on deliverance. A lifeless city, friction between templars and mages, yet that doesn't play out when the character is using magic. I'm mentioning this because I'm playing another RPG right now where a similiar friction exists. And it does play out. Not in any spectacular way, but off and on you will meet peasants who want you thrown into jail. Also the cities are filled with moving people going about their jobs and companions who speak their minds whenever you want them to. It's not a perfect game either, but it provides atmosphere.
As far as the Bioware games I played are concerned, I didn't like nwn very much. It came out at the same time as Morrowind and Morrowind was groundbreaking in 2002. DAO convinced me and provided me with nearly a dozen playthroughs. I'm not so much into Awakenings though. The first signs on the horizon were already visible. The reduced ability to speak with your companions for example and the companions being less interesting and complex than they were in the original campaign.
I found the ME series at a second hand and gave it a try. Although I'm really not into scifi, the series gripped me right from the start, and, since this is repeatedly brought up for comparison, I didn't mind the changes in ME2. But we're talking different genres here. For me, an integral part of fantasy RPGs is the looting element. The ability to share with your companions, thereby changing their looks. This is another thing lost in DAIIs streamlining process.
Lastly, the combat. I don't like it. When I play a RPG character, I want to be someone noteworthy, not someone ridiculous. The combat, in my opinion, is ridiculous. I don't want to see a character swinging a bihander as if it was a toothpick. I don't want my enemies go for explosive body parts evacuations whenever someone hits them with a dagger. And I don't want my own team to jump and run like monkeys on speed.
So, DAII is probably enjoyable for certain tastes, but it fails to meet my expectations when it comes to RPGs.

Black Isle and Bioware collaborated in a few games, but they were seperate studios from the start, Bioware was independent, but Black Isle was actually a division of Interplay. When Interplay went into the red, they fired the entire Black Isle staff, who went ahead to form Obsidian.Rabid Rooster wrote...

Edit: whoops, just to make this post relevant to the thread: also found DA2 to be the worst Bioware game I've played yet. Had a lot of potential with its focus on one character and one city, but it was more an interactive movie with a long, drawn out fighting game between scenes than an actual RPG.

Hmm then it was a mistake but I remember watching a NWN trailer in Icewindale game.
Anyway only played that game once (just like other two) and later only used it to listen drow speak.

"Decision" mostly change 1 or 2 lines of dialog if anything at all. One of the most important decision that changes the most happens to be the character selection.

Not a suprise, Interplay used to publish both BlackIsle and Bioware.

It's still a pretty decent/good game just a bit disappointing in some areas.
I still can't wait for the next game/expansion though.

Mass Effect 2
BG II
My bottom 3
DA:2
DA:2 Black emporium
DA:2 Sebastian
I own 3 seperate versions of NWN and its extensions, DA:O and all its DLC except golem and the darkspawn invasion dlc, BG1+2 and its extensions, ME 1 on xbox360 and PC, ME2 and a large part of its dlc, Jade Empire, KOTOR PC and xbox360, and hell I own 2 copies of DA:2... still think DA:2 is the stinkiest bioware title I own.
