Is Dragon Age 2 really that bad compared to other BioWare games?

For me BG1, NWN OC are worse, and yet DA2 is rather decent, just not as good as it should have been given the series, and the flaws and faults for me were very annoying at points, like retcons, and so blatantly shoddy level/area work, and many of the design decisions are horrid for me (like that every area is just narrow corridors and so on).

The quality of the dialogue and VO and texture/mesh work are better than the standard BioWare title on the other hand, there is just too many other problems that drags it down.

Which is sad, because looking at what I like in DA2 it could easily have been my favourite BioWare title, but now the negative side of things drags it down.

(I kind of like BG1 in some regards, but I don't like the NWN OC).

& I'm omitting games like MDK2 and sonic as I haven't played them.

On Metacritic, DA2 is by far Bioware's worst RPG ever. It got a score of 82 on Metacritic, which is a site that averages 50+ critic reviews. Some people say that the score on Metacritic means nothing, but the fact is that it means a LOT to developers what they get on here. DA2 is 7 less than Bioware's previous worst RPG ever. Baldur's Gate II actually got 95 which is considerably better. Here's the list of Bioware RPGs:

Mass Effect 2 (2010) - 96
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn (2000) - 95
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003) - 93
Baldur's Gate (1998) - 91
Neverwinter Nights (2002) - 91
Mass Effect (2007) - 91
Dragon Age: Origins (2009) - 91
Jade Empire (2005) - 89
Dragon Age II (2011) - 82

Dragon Age II isn't even close to good enough, since Bioware aim for 90+ as said by Laidlaw himself.

Dragon Age 2 got the same kind of score drop that NWN2 received when it was released. Thing is, bioware DIDN'T make NWN2.

Honestly, compared to the NWN original campaign DA2 is decent. And I wasn't that fond of Jade Empire, either.

That said, it's still a decent games, flawed with some bad design decisions, flawed with bugs and glitches (but I could name many other RPGs that were as bad or even worse at release, The Witcher or Fallout: New Vegas, among others) and it lacks at least six month of additional time in development.

So, in short, it's far from great. But judged for what it is, it's enjoyable and decent. However, I have higher expectations from a BioWare game.

If you are comparing it to previous Bioware titles, the only thing I can tell you is how it compares to the ones I've played based on how much, in my own opinion, I enjoyed it.

It's right down the bottom of the list for me in that case.

It's probably my favorite BioWare game. I'd say it's about equal to BG 2, though BG 2 has far more content.

That said, good to see someone who appreciated J.E. It's one of my favorite games as well, and seemingly very underrated by the community at large.

Loved Jade Empire.
One of my favourite Bioware games.

Loved JE, probably not the best cRPG, but it was a very good ARPG.

I liked Jade Empire for what it was, a nice RPG/Action fling. It wasn't by all means my favorite Bioware title, but it was good enough for me to beat it in 2 days. It took me 2 weeks and a lot of inner will to complete DA:2.

I beat KOTOR in 33 hours straight, stopping only for eating and a whole 4 hours to sleep.

I never signed up to play Galaxian in an RPG, but overall Jade Empire was not bad. Two things I remember clearly.

1. Doing the game in one sitting.
2. A 15 second end boss battle.

OP, I'm afraid you're trying to reason with a bunch of bile-spewing monkeys. Please don't take the braying of these brain surgeons at face value. It's beyond their understanding how a studio could POSSIBLY try to innovate when games from the 1990s were so perfect.

To respond, I'm hard pressed to pick a favourite but I'd have to say it's SoU+HotU. I consider them one as they continue the story of the same character. Also Deekin. I don't know who wrote him of the talented writerin' folks, but favourite Bioware character, and that's up against some stiff competition.

NwN gets a lot of bad press, I think, because of a combination of anger at 3rd edition and all it represents and the fact that it wasn't BG3 and tried to force the same gang of bile-spewing monkeys to get into tabletop-style co-op multiplayer. To tie it back to your point, I see a lot of parallels between NwN's initial release and DA2. Both seem to me to be gems in the rough, whose expansions will make them really shine.

Yes, and after that NWN 2 debacle, Obsidian came back with MotB. So there is hope that the next DA title will live up to bioware's usual above average talent(s).

(No, I don't want to talk about SoZ. SoZ does not exist in my universe :P)

Because NwN taken only as the OC sucks hard.

Keep repeating that to yourselves, trolls, and maybe it'll become reality. Oh wait, no it won't, because that's not how reality works.

NwN's OC was at least as good as BG1 if not better, but to realize that would require you to take off your rose tinted nostalgia goggles. Please don't on my account.

It is by FAR the WORST Bioware "RPG", just ahead of ME2 and Jade Empire.

My personal list:

Baldur's Gate 2
Dragon Age Origins
Mass Effect 1
NWN: SoU/HotU
KotoR
Baldur's Gate 1
NWN OC
DAO: Awakening Expansion
Jade Empire
Mass Effect 2
Dragon Age 2

Without doubt the worst game ever made by Bioware and a stain on their otherwise excellent record of games. They should be ashamed. They have lost a huge amount of respect from me by publishing such a poor excuse for a sequel and I hope they take on board all the criticism they have received for it and put more effort into future sequels.

Having played both NwN OC, it's expansions, and user made modules by the wazoo, I can't call the OC any better than mediocre. I got BG, BG Saga, BG2, BG2 Collection. Plot, storywise, deliverance, in my opinion, the BG series and all Infinity Engine games for that matter are by far superior.

If you have a different opinion, that is fine by me. Tastes are subjective and unique to everyone who am I to disagree with what you like or not like anyway.

Name calling over expression of opinion is however rather immature and childish.

DA2 is a fairly good game, and I would rank it compared with other Bioware games roughly around the middle. It has some aspects to it I find superior or better than their average lot, and others I find very lacking.
