Ok, I'm fairly rubbish at tactics, despite gaming for years.
Does anyone have any advice for maintaining my mages stamina? I try only to keep sustains I consider essential, but they seem to drink mana, always running out when things get tight and I'd like to avoid constantly chugging lyrium potions (I mostly use Merrill).
I have a fair amount of Mana-bbosting accessories equipped to them, and Merrill gets blood magic staffs and accessories that give mana points for health points as often as possible (though oddly, when I swapped 1pt of health - 1 extra mana point for a +46 man staff, her mana went up - surely an extra mana pt for every health pt should have had higher mana?)
Also any optimal builds for Merril would be appreciated, I don't have much trouble on battles, but I do play on casual, and I feel I'd squeeze more out of them if I have a better understanding of the tactics & mechanics.
Also, I find Aveline especially and Varrics beasts for draining their stamina dry too.

P.S. - Is there a handy list o fnon-nightmare enemy resistances anywhere too?

If you are finding your mana/stamina pools are too small then you probably need to invest some attribute points in Willpower. Also, it'll help to go for items with +mana regen when possible.

Picking up any of the ending talents in the mage trees (such as Elemental Mastery, Galvanism, Spirit Mastery etc) will grant +10 to mana regen, so it's definitely worth picking up a couple of them if you can possibly do so.

For warrior stamina regen, picking up Bolster, Deep Reserves and Second Wind talents in the Battlemaster tree are definitely going to help in that department.

For Varric, he has a +10 stamina regen ability in his Marksman tree which is definitely something you will want to pick up.  There are other stamina cost reduction talents in other trees too for rogues if I recall correctly.

It's also helpful to know that when an item says +stamina and you equip it to a mage it improves your mana pool.  There are some good staves which have high +stamina if you have the cash, such as Cold Blooded sold by the vendor near the western exit of the Wounded Coast during Act 2.

I have been firing a good few points into willpower, my mages seem to have fairly large mana pools, they just drain them dry really fast.
It's probably something in their builds though, my intuition seems to be up the proverbial creek when it comes to creating effective characters lol.

This might help in deciding how to build your characters. http://biowarefans.c...talent-builder/

;)

I had to respec Fenris because I completely messed him up giving him sustained abilities which left him with no stamina to do anything other than auto attack! Terrible! I respecced him with those Battlemaster talents and he tears through everything with a good level of stamina at all times. It's worth sacrificing a few talents aimed at building up a varied attack repertoire in favour of stam regen I feel.

Good luck!

If you really are having problems, then try to get a warrior using rally to buff mana regen. Its a huge amount, and warriors generally don't have problems with mana except against bosses.

Yeah, basicly it goes this way.

Warriors can take care of they own stamina. (Battlemaster talent tree)
Warriors can buff others stamina and mana. (Battlemaster talent tree)
Mages can heal anyones health with they mana. (Creation and Spirit healer spell trees)

There's your problem right there. Those items don't increase your mana pool; they improve Blood of the First (when it's on, obviously!), increasing the efficiency of casting from health.

Respec Merrill to have no Willpower at all. Put it all into Magic and *Constitution*, and never turn off Blood of the First. (Except when you need to heal her, of course.)

*facepalm* That'll be the problem then: the way I was reading it, I thought it was a blood magic staff that gave you mana boost based on your health, not a staff that will give you a mana boost IF blood magic is active.

Suicidialbaby, thanks for the links - I'm going to respec a couple of characters to your builds and see how I like the differences.

Cheers guys :D

I tried your builds (and adapted some of the Fenris build principles for my 2H warrior), and I absolutely BEASTED the game. I still had hard fights, but felt like I was much more in control even though I was micromanaging much less - I pretty much just ran with Hawke.
I'm pretty sure I couldn't come up with tactics as intricate as yours, but seeing your setups made me realise I was on the riht track and hadn't been making a total balls of mine like I thought :D.

anytime grim, please feel free to voice your experiences using it in a reply to it in the thread itself.

I would suggest Arelex's Berserker Vanguard - Mach-5 Massacre for warriors period.

Nice, the next thing I'm looking for is a really good rogue build for my 'canon' playthrough (after I play an angry mage who's going to get lots of rival points) - are there any solid guides for that?
