Having just finished my latest playthrough, I am thinking of starting a mage playthrough. It will be on Hardmode, and I would like to try and use some of the companions I never use (a.k.a. Fenris and Sebastian).

Sebastion is fairly easy to create a solid build for (albeit less dps than Varric, but anything to use him just once), Fenris I usually use as a pure damagedealer running around nuking enemies, but I was thinking about a party setup with me (mage), Merril, Sebastian, and Fenris. Question is however is it possible to spec Fenris as a good enough tank on Hardmode.

Searching the forum hasn't exactly brought up any input in this regard, so I turn to you all for ideas and throughts on skills.

I play as a mage (force mage/spirit healer) on hard and use Fenris as a tank, I just use talents from his own tree, a bit of the 2h tree and most of the vanguard tree (http://biowarefans.c...riQPSw1zYRmMc0B), no special tanking talents apart from taunt. Works fine for me.

One thing that often works well, is using a combination fro mhis PC, 2h, Vangard and Defense, with a little of the Battle Master tree I think it is for taunt. I always build him like this and he usually turns out to be a better tank for me than Avaline.

I am using Fenris as my Tank (Vanguard) in my current DW rouge playthrough (Hard). I had to use Aveline till I reached level 10~12 and then switched to Fenris once I was able to give him all of the necessary abilities for a Vanguard.

I split attribute points 40%-40%-20% between strength/constitution/willpower. It is not an optimal build but it works pretty well on hard. I use Anders and either Merrill/Varic as my other companions depending on the mission.

he can tank sure, but why do it? He can kill everyone in a few seconds. Tanking would just draw the fight out.

Really try a really hard fight with mage Hawke, another mage, a rouge, and Aveline. Time the fight

Then do the same fight with Fenris. I don't know about you but it tends to be easier with Fenris cause he ends fights fast.

I recommend making Fenris something of a mutt: heavy investment in vanguard (specifically control+upgrade, cleave+upgrade) with rally to pass on control to allies, and a high Magic stat. Between items, his personal tree, and his magic, he can become MAGIC IMMUNE, which is AWESOME if you have nukers, but not so much if you're using haste...

I'd resist the temptation to make him too much of a tank (in the survival sense) too early.  Along with Taunt, I start out by getting a lot of talents in 2H and Vanguard--but once they become available I start getting the tanking talents from the lower half of his personal tree.  Once you've got Sunder, Whirlwind and Cleave out of his 2H and Vanguard trees, go ahead and start giving him more defense out Defender and as you feel you need it.

Fenris would work fine as a main tank IF you have very good crowd control.

I wuld recomend ALWAYS speccing Fenris the same way. Heavy Vanguard and Teveinter Fugitive, little 2h. Focus entirely on max crit chance for stagger.

I agree with the other posters - Fenris is the best choice for tank.

If you are playing as a force mage, and using Gravitic Ring + Walking Bomb combos, remember to either move Fenris away from Gravitic Ring before Walking Bomb explodes or give him a spirit warding rune

Important early talents
SUNDER (very important)
Cleave/Claymore,
Massacre,
Destroyer,
Lyrium Ghost,
Might
Veneer of Calm,
Battle Tempo
Mighty Blow
Giant's Reach

Add later as soon as you can:
Bolster/Second Wind
Shattering Blow
Scythe/Reaper
Elemental Aegis
Rally
Inner Reserves
Spirit Pulse
Whirlwind
