 Hi,

I am running Dragon Age 2 with the 1.02 patch installed and the Black Emporium installed. I'm running under Vista 32 with a dual core proccessor (so it isn't the single core problem I read about).

Everything was running pretty much fine apart from a crash every now and then but I could just start up the game fast so it was no real problem. But after taking a few hours break I loaded DA2 up and found that the load game option was greyed out. I checked to see if my saved games had disappeared but they are still in the correct place and have everything they need in them.

I tried starting a new game and saved it and this saved game I can load even though it's right beside my original saves character. I can't see any reason why my original saves aren't showing up at all and I really don't want to lose 20 hours or something of play.

Any more info needed just ask.

Switch Character

On the laod game screen it only shows the saved games for the most recently played character.

There's a switch character button at the bottom to access saves for other chars.

I know and it doesn't turn up there. I knew there was a problem before I created the second character since the load button was greyed out (created the second to try and trouble shoot).

this sounds like a far more significant problem than it seemed at first.

If I understand correctly, you can only 'resume' your last game, and not load individual saves?

If you try to save your game (not quicksave) do you see all of the save files? or does it appear empty?

What happened was that I loaded the game up as usual but the load game was greyed out and the resume just wasn't there. I checked and found my saves in the normal folder so decided to try saving a new game to make sure it was going to the same place. I saved this new game/character and I can load from this character but the old one hasn't shown up in game (switch character just shows the new one). Yet the new character is saved in the same place as the old one and has the same files inside as my old one.

I just have no idea why it doesn't read my old characters save all of a sudden. All the files appear to be there so why won't the game regonise the saves suddenly?

Unfortunately, I can only guess that the character xml/save data got corrupted somehow.

If it's fine going forward with other characters then I wouldn't worry too hard. If it happens again, though....

Same thing is happening to me, gaddison -- the "Switch Character" button is only showing saves
from my old character, not my new one. Up until now, I've been able to resume the last game played and access my new character saves that way, but last night the game locked up at a loading screen. I had to reboot, and now I can only see the saves for the old character. No idea how to make the game access my new saves...

Apologies for the double post -- just tried creating a throwaway character. I am able to see that one in the Switch Character list, and the one I used for my initial playthrough -- but the second one I created, the one I was playing when the game locked up on me last night, is nowhere to be found. (Though that character's save games are in the usual folder, and the character appears on my BioWare profile page.)

Try this:
  • Load DA2 (easier if you load it windowed), then switch to the desktop.
  • Create a new temp folder in Windows and keep it open.
  • Open the saves folder of the character that won't show up (Documents->Bioware->Dragon Age 2->Characters->Name of Character->Saves).
  • Take the most recent save folder and move it from the character folder to the temp folder.
  • Go to "Load Game" and hit "Switch Character" ingame to see if your character now shows up.
  • If not, back out to the main menu, then repeat 4-6 until you see your character or all the saves are moved.
The reason I suggest this is that the load UI may be looking at the most recent save in a folder to determine character info, and if that save is corrupt, then it may ignore the whole folder.  If that theory's correct, then removing the most recent save from the folder changes which save file the UI tries to read.  Hopefully it's just the latest save the game can't read and not all of them...

That seems to have worked -- looks like it was a corrupt autosave file that was causing me grief.

Thanks much, Mongoose22.
