I went to the black emporium after entering the code (xbox) and see the Mirror and other magic items, but no dog. Where is this little dude??

Well, I play on PC but I can only assume that this is the same:

On your Abilities page, on the bottom right, underneath all of your Hawke's potential talent trees, there should be a little dog icon; white with a brown mabari silhouette on it. That's the summon ability for him.

I know on the PC you can drag the icon onto your quickbar like any other spell but I don't know how your new-fangled console technology works. Also, get off my lawn.



Oh, and also you can rename him by clicking on him in Gamlen's house; it will initiate a cutscene and then allow you to enter a name.

thanks, so you have to use 1 ability point at your next level up to get him?

You don't need to spend an ability point to get him, you should have the ability to summon him automatically. Just assign the skill to a button like any other.
