yesterday I decided to play BGII again, as I liked the game a lot back when I played it for the first time. However I wanted to try some custom portraits just to give it a wider variety.

I know many people have had issues with custom portraits, but I've dived in dozens of threads and haven't found a solution.

A'ght, so that's the problem: I've made some custom portraits myself, correct size, correct format, correct folder. When I went ingame the game recognized them, but showed the face with the question mark instead. Tried to save them in diferent bit depths and using different image editors, but nothing worked.

So, assuming I was doing something wrong, I downloaded a whole bunch of custom portraits from different reknown portrait sites. None of them worked either. The same question marked face showed up both in medium and small versions.

Read in some threads that just rebooting solved the problem for some people (wait, really?) but obviously, that did nothing. Also read in another thread that sometimes portraits don't show up until you save the game and load it. Still didn't work.

So, if anyone knows what could be causing the problem, any advice would be really welcome. And please, no advices 'bout folder name, image format, image name... as those things are already ok.

Thx in advance for your help.

PS: I'm using Windos XP, but I doubt that has nothing to do with custom portraits.

Ps2: Sorry if some sentences lack coherence, my level of english isn't as good as it should :(

If things like the image format and image name were ok, they would probably display just fine, so if you're not going to accept any troubleshooting on that part, you're probably not going to get a lot of help.

I'd recommend this - take some of the custom portraits you have (both large and small) and zip or rar them up and post them on a file sharing site, then post the download link here. I know I'll download them and take a look at what they show up like on my machine.

Well.. if I stated that those are correct is because I DO know that they're correct, unless even the sites that have portraits in them have uploaded them in an incorrect format.

I mean, I have them in the portraits forlder under BGII installation folder (otherwise they wouldn't show up ingame) names are 8 letters or shorter ending with L and S and images are in a 24-bit bmp format.with the correct pixels size. So that's why I was asking for some other possible conflict, as I can't figure up what else could be wrong. Sorry it it sounded harsh, didn't mean to offend anyone.

Oh, btw, instead of uploading them (as most of them are downloads from portrait sites...
http://www.vaulscast...bgportraits.htm
http://portraits.cho...net/index2.html

I have all of the portraits from the first link, and some from the second one (chosenofmystra's ones converted to bmp, of course). None of them work even though I've seen those sites (especially second one) recommended for portrait downloading in many threads.

Ty for the fast reply ^^

You should have somthing like portl.bmp and ports.bmp - from the above it sounds like you only have portl and ports for example. Apologies if not the case but a lack of suffix will result in the question mark.

Edit - also you mention 24 bit, I thought the smaller image was normally 8 bit. No idea if it matters.

Yup, not the case. As I said, images are on bmp format, I just meant that the name itself (excluding the extension) ends in L and S respectively, as it's meant to be.

And yes, manual from the game mentions 8bits for small ones, but I've read in some threads from some portrait makers that they use 24bit format for small ones as well with no problems. In any case, at least large ones should work, as they're intended to be in 24bit. And downloaded ones (both large and small) should be in the correct format and display correctly...

The portrait can have any name - a lot of sites do use similar naming strategies (such as m29l), but this is not required. If you have done everything correctly then you've got a bug in your installation. You should be able to check this in-game by:
- go to records screen
- go to customize
- go to appearance
Can you successfully change the portrait to one of the standard selections? If not, you have a bug and I would suggest a full reinstallation, including all official patches. If so, you should also be able to change to a custom portrait by clicking on the custom button on that screen.

I extracted this pair http://www.vaulscast...ped/assasin.zip directly to my bg2\\portraits and had no problems loading it. You definitely have something wrong with your install OR some sort of weird permission issue on the portrait (or parent) folder.

Sorry to necro the thread, but I had the same problem and fixed it by marking the folder not read-only (no idea why it was in the first place). Just thought I'd post in case anyone else is having the same problem.
