How does "hardening" party members affect the ending?

Edit: Sorry, missed the parentheses. I'm considering hardening Alistair on my second play through. He was really whiney about becoming King when I didn't harden him.

After her personal quest, you tell her all the options that basically portraits her as a killer.

If you harden and romance Leliana does she stay with you? (do you get the same text ending as if she wasn't hardened)
What happens if you romance her, harden her and you die in the end? (I read somewhere she commits suicide if you don't harden her)
What happens at the end if you don't romance her (but harden her) ?

As a human noble I was planning to marry Anora and become king, I really could forget that after the hardening. I think the only way to become king after hardening him is to side with Loghain.
But that choice made me feel really bad so I had to bite the bullet and there went the king dream.
And it came much worse, since I had cornered Anora with the support in exchange for marriage deal before the landsmeet my beloved Leila kissed my sorry *** good bye before the march on Denerim.
There I was .. no king, no love .. just the lonely Grey Warden in the Epilogue. Gambled high and lost everything

There is at least one big difference, during the landsmeet he declares himself king even if you side with Anora. The ultimate question who will be king won't even come up.

Does Alistair still meet with common folk and be good? Does he still give elves bigger rights?
Did you "harden" Leilana?

It said that he hangs around in Taverns and such with the common folk, but nothing about elves. Missed the opportunity to harden Leila.

This'd seem to be a "good ending" unless you happened to really think the old god soul needed saving. I went back to a pre-landsmeet save to try and set it up - my persuade was maxed - but sparing Logaine resulted in a fairly unpleasant Alistair wigout with attendant attempt by Anora to have him executed after he abandoned the marriage plan.
I don't really know if I want to go all the way back to the first Goldana meetup - which in my case was prior to both Orzammar and the Bracilian Forest - just to 'test' if hardening Alistair would result in him accepting the marriage after Loghaine was spared. However he did say something about only wanting the kingship to bring Logaine to justice, and was a little whiny about the whole thing, so it might be the case, given what people've said.
I dunno how much backtracking I feel like without any full playthrough yet, I might just go the Morrigan route. I can't stomach a Fallout 3 conclusion, I find it unduly gravitas-ex-machina.

I've read some people say they've gotten an Alistair + Anora monarchy with a Logaine sacrifice.

Ahhh, I can relate and very much to the F3 aspect. I chose that route and I've got to say, despite being such a hero I wound up feeling lonely and sad at the end. It's really tough to have to have the story end like that. And I did my whole playthrough being blissfully unaware of hardening or what it does. It really is amazing how much weight your responses have in this game at times.

Not sure, but she does a darn good job of hardening me.

You have to kill Marjolaine, then convince Leliana that she was just running away from who she really was. You don't convince her that she's a bad person deep down, just that she was lying to herself by turning to the Chantry.

I did. I hardened Alistair, spared Loghain at Landsmeet, made Alistair marry Anora, and let Loghain kill the archdemon.

My first game Trough I convinced Alistar to marry Anora. After dueling 1vs1 against Loghain and killing him in front of his daughter (Anora) she married Alistair but Alistair remained with me as a character while Anora took the control of the kingdom until Darkspawn was defeated. I did get the ending with Elves being given their freedom etc. This was done without Hardening Alistair. As a matter of fact, I think my approval with Alistair was just above 70. I did get the offer to help him as a councellor but refused and offered it to Wynne if I am not mistaken or something in these lines.
Anyhow, there are many options available it seems.
Yeah, this is what I did the first go round too; but I didn't realize I'd be needing an expendable Grey Warden later.
Thanks.
