I need to use an all ranged party with my mage... walking bomb tends to blow me or Aveline up on a regular basis... mostly me because I'm cool like that.
Give Aveline 1-point Elemental Aegis and a spirit resist rune, and she'll be good to go. The issue is that you don't get the Spirit Resist rune until Act II, so for Act I Walking Bomb setups, it's best to go all-ranged party.

Trying out a NM mage. Had to turn down to hard on the fight with Fredricks in the prologue. Having a lot of "G******it Carver!" moments as he scythes into my back after I click hold position. He's done this several times. NM is very challenging, but to me... not so much fun. Looks like I cap difficulty on Hard/ *shrugs*

I don't recommend using 2H talents at all for your Fenris/Carver, too much can go wrong. I was incredibly lazy early game, and didn't set tactics for Carver, and he killed me with Mighty Blow about 8 times. Like, his bitter ass went out of his way to kill me with Mighty Blow.
Even with tactics, I don't suggest it. Just stick to your Cleave/Claymore/Personal tree/etc.
You can take on Nightmare! NO GIVING UP IN ARELEX THREADS!

NM up to and including prologue is a kite fest if you don't kite Fredricks all the way to the Templars. However, this is not an indication of how hard Act 1 is going to be. The higher you get in level, the easier it becomes. Act 3 becomes borderline boring, but fun to try things out, since you're almost invincible at that stage.
You don't need to kite in that battle at all. No need to get help from the guardsman, either.

Arelex, i demand a compilation video of you failing, firstly to calm the wounded egos of all people following this thread, and secondly to point out the flaws of your strategies![]()

1. I never fail
2. My strategies are flawless
I certainly didn't have Rock Armor deactivated in the Lesson 2 Act of Mercy Templar fight because I wasn't paying attention, and dropped a Firestorm on my own head against the group of skeletons when you exit the cave. No sir. I'm perfect.
But really, if there were tons of holes in my strategies, I wouldn't be sharing them; I thoroughly test everything before I even fix my hands to type a suggestion or guide for someone else. If there is a weakness to something that you need to be paying attention to cover, I always make sure to list it.

If i dont have the fatch will i have to adjust some of the tactics? Like instead of skipping to tactic 13 just put it tactic 12? or is the bug still there pre-patch
It's still bugged.

but yeah, i'm not sure if you really need to make alternate builds? I would have thought most of it was pretty straightforward/same old..
edit: unless you're talking more experimental concepts? I'm playing with the idea of using isabela as a tank now she shouldn't be getting knocked-back as often. only problem is I don't get staggers...

A quick poll: How many of you guys reading this thread have the DLC item pack? I was thinking that if enough people did, I'd do some alternate builds to get the most out of the new stuff.
Sure, I would appreciate that.

Is it possible to get Isabella to 50% friendship without having her in my party?
Yes, but probably not before Act 2. I've only had her leave me once, and that's because I forgot to give her one of her gifts before I started the To Catch a Thief quest.

I forgot to mention that I was still in A1 with the mage so spirit rune is not possible, besides Aveline is loaded up on RoFs because I'm greedy. I was thinking about ways to get around this, and eventually just ended up turning the tactic off... but then turned it back on.. because it's too awsome to turn off. I just have to pay more attention to what anders is casting and run Aveline away when I see walking bomb.AreleX wrote...

I don't have any DLC except the free stuff.. so because of this I think everyone else should suffer and you not doing anything with DLC you have to pay for. Nothing personal but as I am President of the World my will must be done.

Check my second tutorial video for tips on playing without a tank. Give Aveline and her cartoon Superman jaw a break for a bit, and bring Varric.
P.S - I'm going to get Bioware to give everyone in the thread free DLC except you (somehow)

I'm wearing the Spiral Eye set (Ugly -.-)
Dual Ring of Cantrips which gives me a 1:1 health to mana for blood magic i think
Talisman Of Saarebas
And im currently using the Valdasine which i got from the deep roads and sold all the rest of my other staves for replacements, which brings me to my next question are there certain things i should be looking out for in Act 2? I went for the Pure Mag build if that helps
Thanks

I'll chime in - If you're playing nightmare, you'll want a couple elemental damage staffs in addition to the one you currently have (like a cold staff, an electricity staff, and a fire staff). This way you can exploit elemental weaknesses that certain enemies have. Switch to a fire staff against enemies weak to fire and so on.Wafodie wrote...
