I don't see why people hate fireball so much. Yeah, it is less damage, but it doesn't cost much mana to use, and it has a short cooldown. That's gotta be worth something.

I think it's just that it pales in comparison to Chain Lightning.

@AreleX

Do you feel like the high crit build is better than the straight mag/con build? I am currently playing a high crit build, only at level 10, my crit chance is about 30%.

If you are still using the high crit build can you tell me your stats by say level 16 or so, I have dex/cun at 20 at the moment, with eq they are about 22/23. I get some very nice crits, especially now that I can use the staff of primal order.

Thanks and let me know what armor or items you like.

I've made a video showcasing the Team Red Mist (Aveline, Sebastian, Anders) setup from my guide, which is probably my favorite party to run with this build. Check it out!

As I update party layouts, I'll make more videos showcasing all the awesome things you can do with them.

Arelex, if you were a woman I'd be inclined to kiss you... and I'm strongly debating it now even though you're not a woman.

Awesome guide as always *starts DA2 and rerolls his current mage*

At level 22, I currently have on:

Regret (Cowl, +% cold)
Robes of Unblemished Cleanliness (absolute must-have, not negotiable)
Gloves of the Champion (could make a case for the High Dragon Gauntlets
Dwarven Leather Boots (+% crit dmg, don't have Champion Boots yet)

All I personally can tell you with confidence is that it's certainly not *weak*, though 'better' or 'worth it' is a different discussion, but I actually noticed consistently faster clears with my crit change/damage build than my pure magic build, though the numbers should say otherwise.

Either way, by Act III, the two roads kind of converge anyways, since there's no good Rogue armor that isn't class-locked, and readily available. Robe of Unblemished Cleanliness and the Ring of the Ferryman will far outstrip anything you can get that's crit-oriented, though I am testing the few leftover Rogue armor items that CAN be viable.

[/quote]I did, Thanks for that!  I'm not entirely sure how useful knowing how long they stayed stealthed was for you in your gameplay, but appreciated non the less.  I was a little drunk off budlight limes when I decided to play tag with that assassin.

Fun fact: When I wrote my first guide, I took a shot every 5 paragraphs. In hindsight, I'm shocked that it didn't end up a mess of incoherent nonsense, but at the time, it was awesome.

Shouldnt crit builds have some issues with the attack rate? I somehow would expect a lot of glancing blows against elites and bosses.

Attack figures that, and for Mages, Magic is the attack attribute. Keep Magic up (+att gear/buffs help too) and that should be a fairly limited concern.

Elites are dead after one Brittle or Stagger, and I didn't have any real issues with bosses. Anders had Heroic/Valiant Aura, as a note.

I went about 65/35 on MAG vs DEX/CUN, but played all of Acts I-II with under 18 CON, so if you want room for error, a pure mage build will be better.

Question: Why do people always preffer Chain Lightning over Fist of the maker as a way to exploit stagger. Fist of the maker has shorter cool down cost 1 point to get as opposed to 2 to chain reaction (you need fist of the maker for unshakable anyway), and there's no immunities to it. It perform just as well if not better than Chain Lighting for control purposes.
The only reason i can think of in favor of chain lightning is non-Friendly Fire but Fist of the maker deal little damage to unstaggered target anyway i dont think it should be a problem if you hit your tank once a while with it.

Both cost two. Fist only exploits staggers on an upgrade as well. Otherwise it's not great damage and the knockdown is nice, but not very long. Not to say it's not useful, I still use it fairly regularly, but Chain deals more base damage so will deal more staggered damage.

Did you read my post ?(i know its clustered) You are going to grab fist of the maker anyway for unshakable. You only need to invest 1 point into Maker's Hammer as opposed to two for chain lightning and reaction.

Damage wise they are not so much different, no one's immune to fist of the maker unlike Chain Lighting which deals zero damage versus electricity immune enemy such as qunari.

1. Only two enemies in the entire game are resistant to electricity damage, one (Profanes) of whom you only see once the whole time.

2. If my memory serves, TEN enemy types are weak to electricity

3. Chain Lightning is fire and forget, FotM has to be aimed, and hits a much smaller radius

4. Chain Lightning's shock is AMAZING for CC, even vs non-STAGGERED enemies

5. You'll be getting Rock Armor anyways, so the points aren't that big of a deal

Chain Lightning wins, hands down.

The only real advantage Fist of the Maker + Maker's Hammer has is vs. low-health dudes.  Chain Lightning will not continue to arc if it inflicts a killing blow: in that regard, Fist of the Maker can be better since it will affect more targets in that circumstance.  It happens more often than you'd think, but I'd still reach for Chain Lightning every time just in case to be safe.  Fist of the Maker, fully upgraded, serves as a wonderful stopgap between Chain Lightning cooldowns, however.  I don't ever worry about FF too much with Fist of the Maker + Maker's Hammer because the un-Staggered damage is not nearly enough, meaning that you can cast it on your tank without too many worries (and there's always a Heal after the fact to apologize :innocent:).

With Paralyzing Hemorrhage already as Stagger exploit #2, I don't think Fist of the Maker + Maker's Hammer is necessary here.  Especially with all the nuking going on. :wizard:

Bad thing is, in the end, you must choose between Sebastian and Anders. Not the ideal end game party.

You can sub Varric to much of the same effect, debatably even better.

Also, end-game is end-game, there's still the whole rest of the game to play. I've just been using Sebastian because I got him recently, and have been enjoying the change of pace/new lines.

Sebastian is much less of a **** than I thought he would be. Maybe my developed tolerance for Anders' bull**** is just making me let more slide

Try running with Varric AND Sebastian for a while. They've got some good banter. I believe I had them both with me when I did Repentance once. Sebastian was locked into the party, and Varric was my traps/locks guy. Wasn't the most ideal party, but I got through it.

The end game is actually the easiest part of Act 3.Neither Orsino nor Meredith are challenging, and a lot of people help to defeat them. The remaining health pots should be enough.(and it didnt hurt if a mage have a least basic heal)

Did I miss the attribute allocation in the guide or can I assume this is the Dex/Cun mage from your previous thread?
