Oh My God I mean they have a different culture for sure, but I think they really like the crossdress in there, so this is rather strange O_o

Still if they believe that it's possible to have a real relationship just over the internet, they are sadly mistaken. I really don't see any reason to have I rule like that. For what propose is that? I see only fear of being gay with a guy that you though was a girl but isn't that a classic joke so how can anyone fall for that? are they stupid?

*raises eyebrow*

Several questions: Who is "they" in this context, what do you mean by "different culture", and by what evidence are you presuming that "'they' believe it's possible to have a real relationsihp just over the internet"? I might be wrong, but I have a feeling that your reading of the situation is way off the mark.

Me and my wife and my unborn daughter are 3 living examples of Mihura being mistaken, and somewhat narrowminded.

If you ask me, it's much more comfortable to make friends/relationships over the internet...some people might think that's sad and pitiful...well is it more pitiful then meeting your girlfriend in a bar while you're drunk? Sorry but I'd rather meet my loved one in comfortable surroundings.

What? are you serious? how can i be narrowminded? sorry if I offend you but I already told that I said "just over the internet" I like to believe that some human contact is still needed for a relationship to flourish more and I too meet some ppl over the internet and then go to know them in real life so I see no problem with knowing ppl over the internet.

What i meant was that you will always need some degree of human contact but maybe I'm to old fashion :P

yeah you're just too old fashion!

Nah I'm just kidding I agree with you there...no human contact makes you go insane!..and I mean none at all...if you were the only sentient being on an entire planet you'd rather kill yourself I'm sure. Look at I am Legend =S

But sorry for the misunderstanding on the relationships over internet though.

Someone on that mmorpg forum mentioned that in China, MMO also act as socal networks and even online dating services. In that light that "true gender" policy makes a bit more sense.

If that is true than the decision probably has more to do with satisfying the desires of a large portion of their customers than cooperate or government control.

I assume that even in Western online dating services you are expected to use your true gender (and age), although I don't know if you actually have to prove anything.

Shazbot... And here I've rolled up about half a dozen female characters for DA:O.... Image IPB
I suppose this is where I get on my knees and beg Bioware/EA not to adopt the same policy?

Amusing article nonetheless.

I am completely in agreement with the Chinese goverment.

Males who use female avatars are obviously subversive rebels who are a threat to the well being of the people.

In fact, I think that females should not be allowed to use male avatars because they are obviouslt also terrorists who are clearly planning a mass suicide bombing.

Now that I think about it, ugly people should not be allowed to use attractive avatars becasue they are clearly evil and deceptive fraudsters who just want to trick us and corrupt the mineds of the hard working men and women.

In fact, using an avater that doesn't look exactly like yourself is dangerous as that represents an expression of individuality that will lead to the abuse of our innocent playful children and small fluffy animals.

So, in fact we should all use the same avatar. From now on everyone should use a picture of Chairman Mau as their avatar to demonstrate that they are not subversive, rebelious, murderous, homosexual, fraudulent, child molesting, kitten drowning, suicide bombing, pan-cake terrorist, facsist, racist, evil communists.

Nice rant.  However did they not teach you in school to read all your facts without jumping into conclusions?

You seem pretty wound up over something that isn't really happening, at least not in the way that it plays out in your head.  If you had actually read the article, instead of imagining a communist conspiracy, you would have realized that this is a company setting the policy and not the government.

Next time read an article that is linked in the first post, instead of getting all bent out of shape.  Also it is Chairman Mao.

Comparing the Chinese decision to ban male players with the efforts to provide medical cover to all the people, if that's what you meean, isn't exactly the same. I am from Europe, and around here demonstrating against the right that all people should at least have medical cover seems at least barbaric. Private sector will always go after profit, while the state can at least try to go for the well-being of the citizens. Leaving the economy in private hands without any kind of control didn't worked exactly as they say it would, and the economical crisis was the outcome.

The thing is, most people already have health care here already, and are perfectly content with it. What Obama wants to do, is the same thing Bill and Hillary wanted to do when Clinton was in office, and generally what most Democrats in the US polictical system are all about, create more reasons for new forms of taxes and claim its for the good of the people. In this case "national healthcare" (something that wouldn't work with the amount of people in the US to begin with)

The idea that so many of the American public fell for his "change" message so easily made me facepalm about as hard as I think anyone possibly could without hurting myself. He's like every single other politician, dishonest, and full of it. Add to that he hails from one of the most corrupt states in the country (Chicago) and its a flat out recipie for diaster and hilarity at the same time. Image IPB

All of them are corrupt, whether they have D or R besides their name. I love how political sides always think they have done nothing wrong but the other side is the devil. Both parties have screwed up, both parties are controlled by the lobbyists and both parties have screwed us.

As I wrote earlier, I assume it's to give security to those players who want to use the game as an online dating platform. It appears that this may be rather common on China.

In small defense of the Chinese, my friend speaks fluent Chinese and visits China regularly.

The way the Chinese use the internet is quite different than Western culture, more so than you would be surprised. For instance, almost all Chinese have a QQ number, which most people here (in the United States) have never even heard of.

Internet dating and relationships are actually very common in China, and my friend actually met his significant other online through those same portals (she lives in Beijing). Though it is a bit "controlling" to extend this to gaming, I can see why it is a much bigger deal for them to play the proper gender than it would be for us.

haha, great article made me laugh

alltough I still don't understand some guys doing it  and i mean, basically MMo, because in SP games you act as You want, but in MMO acting as a girl/woman just to gain easy help in quests from brave knightly guys is pretty lame in my opinion.
In my previous guild in Guild Wars we had a guy, all his characters was female, it wouldn't be any bad, but he acted like a soft type woman - snooping around, gossiping, "enyoying sunsets at beach" with some male PC's, acting often like a helpless princess virgin..... so we kicked him out, cuz we were afraid, that someday he will start to act some cyber- sex with one of us:o, was it harsh, or "political incorrect" ? maybe, but, this is an MMO, and we all want to have fun, and not just to be playmates of some weirdo that has trans dreamabouts...

On the other hand, I got some girlfriend, who plays a male character, no one in game actually knows that She is a girl, when i meet her, I asked, why she hides her real sex? She answered : because, She don;t like to be surrounded by horny males, that helping her in every task, and she don't want any "easy fare" in game.... She's my idol from then... but maybe some guys really enjoy it , when a bunch of horny males jump around them, thinking, that he is a redhead, niceass,good-dressed ranger ?:o:lol:

I thought Chicago was a city in Illinois. :P

In  any case, the article was mildly amusing. I do think Jon Wood tried too hard to be comical though. As for the game, well... I can't believe any publisher cares so much about this to go to such extreme lengths. What does it matter if a male plays a female avatar in some obscure MMO? I'm sure the company has its reasons. I just wonder if one of those reasons is an executive getting burned by the knowledge he was hitting on a guy masquerading as a woman while exploring with his company's game. :?

Put Loghain in charge of the east; he'd straighten things up. Perhaps sell some slaves, poison some authorities, but he would not allow pervy gamepublishers/government-thingys to check little kid's 'n' stuff's genders! That's just... sick!

Actually, your health care system is not fine, and has never been fine. When health care is run by corporations, their bottom line is not in the interest of the consumer, but in the interest of profits. Even the drug companies have a say in your care, and that's not right at all.

My sister is an asthmatic, and it's a severe case. She has to take steroids, and needs an inhaler with her at all times. Someone's poor housekeeping skills is enough to put her in the hospital. When she lived in Alberta, she was covered by the Albertan government for her medical problems. We grew up with it, it was normal to us. Getting a years' worth of inhalers cost $30.

Then, she married an American, and immigrated (4 years and 20 grand later) to the states. She works at a national bank, she has good medical coverage, but she still pays upwards of $20 per inhaler. That's a lot of money when you consider that she can die without them, and she's not able to get the brand she knows and trusts, the brand that she used since infancy, because that's not the brand that's contracted with your hospitals and pharmacies.

You're used to it because you've lived there your whole life, but for those of us from the outside looking in, we recognize how completely broken your health care system is.

Also, there is a reason why they call it a 'Public Healthcare Option'.

Here, I'll make it more obvious for you. 'Public Healthcare Option'.

Also, go China! You've already made massive efforts towards the demonstration of you're ineffective national policy by allowing Hong Kong (a chunk of rock an autonomous region) to become more successful than an entire country.

Free cheesecake oppression for everyone!
