Why is Mike Laidlaw never wrong?

I finshed reading a recent interview of Mike Laidlaw in Game Informer. This is one among many interviews that I have read on Dragon Age 2 with Mike Laidlaw. I notice a trend in these interviews: he is always right (according to him) and all the changes he made from Dragon Age: Origins were right.

He defends the repeated dungeons. Defends lame sidequests. Defends push A for Awesome. Defends poor storytelling. Defends the non-tactical combat.

Every interview that I read with Mike Laidlaw on Dragon Age 2 makes me more and more dislike this person and know that with him at the helm, Dragon Age 3 is gonna be worse. He constantly says things like "personally" amd "my opinnion" with regards to direction on Dragon Age 2. He essentially built the game that he wanted and not the game that the fans wanted. He built the game for people who didn't play Dragon Age: Origins.

I was a huge fan of Bioware up until Dragon Age 2. Not every game was great but I felt that at least, for the most part, Bioware was trying to do right by me. I can't say that about Dragon Age 2. Mike Laidlaw was doing right by himself and I'm assuming EA. We need somebody else than somebody who builds a game for himself instead of his fans. PLEASE somebody else Bioware. If that can't happen, maybe Bioware's finest should split and make their own dev studio.

Before anybody says anything, yes I am still QQ'ing about Dragon Age 2. I don't think I will stop. I just am a fan of what great games Bioware can make. I hope they choose to make the right one next.

Not to be cheeky, really...I think you answered your own question. Yeah, I got the distinct feeling that Mr. Laidlaw doesn't like DAO, and never did. And he was brought on to the DA franchise late, basically after it was already made, so I don't know that he had that much imput. Again, subjective on my part. Could be wildly off base. Just the impression I got.

While I don't necessarily believe Mike is the sole person to blame, I do agree that a new lead should be brought in for DA3. DA2 was an abysmal failure in my opinion, and fresh ideas are desperately needed if this series is going to gain redemption in my eyes.

I doubt he can just say whatever he wants on interviews. EA owns Bioware, so it's not wise/in breach of his contract to bite the hand that feeds him, and all that.

Judging by his choice of wording, I think he believes it regardless.

I don't know if it's "just Laidlaw" or maybe EA/BW, who wants to change the DA franchise. I do feel the same as you are, when reading those interviews.

But Laidlaw I believe can not at this point in Time, "bash and smash" DA2. It still worry's me tho, is that really what he thinks!? Confusing, I know.

True, but having a bit of modesty wouldn't hurt, would it? I mean, no game is entirely devoid of flaws.

Its asinine to even think so.

It's one thing to bite the hand that feeds, it's another to completely ignore the major flaws with this game....and to tell us to just up the game difficulty. Seriously?

I think he genuinely believes DA2 is a good game/the game that everyone wanted.

If you believed in your core that this was the best game you could make (I don't, he does) it's easy to dismiss minor crap since you still believe it's got ten tons of awesome inside.

I don't mind that his vision was different from Origins, nor that he wanted to try and bring in a different demographic. What aggrivates me to no ends is how he treats the fanbase like morons with his comments, regardless if he means to or not.

Do I have issues with this game and not really like it? Yes.

Do i out-right hate it and think BioWare sold out? No.

Just don't treat us like morons and admit to the issues at hand and be honest with us, I don't think that's too much to ask for.

I wouldn't talk poorly about a game PUBLICALLY I was a part of so soon after release when sales can still be affected. What do you expect djwyattwood?

right now, i dont expect any sort of criticism until maybe 9 to 12 months down the road.

I dont think he'll go on these forums for a while.

He would be flamed too much.

Given his current standing with many forumites, his being on this forum is detrimental to his job.

shame. It seems like this is really the only haven that a dev can express their feelings regarding something without having to worry about the constant Eye of EA over their shoulders. Within reason of course, but there is more freedom here than in an interview that is shipped to various locales.

Some stuff he said in recent interviews I agreed with. Some.

I'd make a fake account and look at what everyone's saying about me.

My God I can't trust any of you! You could be Mike Laidlaw!

In my opinion, the direction of DA2 was warped by the individuals who worked on it. Does this make the direction they took wrong? Not, if their goal was to destroy many of the things that (I thought) were good with DA:O. I couldn't believe they didn't just improved the DA:O system instead of using a different system. It just doesn't make sense to me to make it so drastically changed, that we can't even use the original toolset on it. The changes should have been such that a download of resources to the toolset would have made it possible for us to use it. It was supposed I expected it to be a sequel not a whole new environment.

Just my feelings and opinions :)

That was always just a meaningless marketing gimmick.

Questionable assertions.

I'd rather the lead designer makes what he has the vision to make rather than hold a democratic fan election regarding the direction of the franchise.

Also, you don't speak for all fans.

What is it you expect him to do? Come to your house and reprogram the game to your liking? Publicly trash his own company in a major gaming site interview?

The first is obviously ridiculous and the second would get him fired, so neither will happen. Get used to it.
