In all areas EXCEPT Lothering, Denerim and Ostagar i get 80-90FPS on Max settings without Frame buffer effect. But as soon as i enter One of these areas, it drops down to 30-40FPS (The absolute minimum has been 28FPS).

My rig is:

GTX 560ti Overclocked
q8400 quadcore @ 2.66 ghz
4GB Ram (Although it only registers 3.07GB due to my OS)

Is there any reason this rig would drop down to that FPS? I've heard many people drop down to this FPS with even more powerful rigs than mine. Is it just poor optimisation in these areas?

Thanks.

It's not really to do with optimisation more to do with there is a lot on the screen at the same time to process so the GPU is having to work a lot harder than in other areas where there are not as many textures to process and lighting effects and things in the distance that rely on Anisotropic filtering etc etc.

It happens to everyone in these areas it's just to do with the ton of stuff on the screen and all the stuff being continuously processed by the GPU My personal worst frame drops are during the final battle because there is just so much happening at once with people fighting and spell lighting effects all over the place

So how high quality would the GPU have to be to get Denerim and the final battle running at a smooth 60+ FPS? I thought for sure the 560 would be able to do that.

Your card is more than enough, it's just that area of the game. Personally, I'd have to agree with it being poor optimization. I can play Crysis on max with almost no lag, keeping around 40-50fps. But when I get to Denerim in DA:O... I get nailed and hit around 20-25fps. Everywhere else in the game plays smooth as butter at 60-75fps (vsync on). But Denerim... dear lord, Denerim is awful. And since it's just this one area in the game, to me that says poor optimization. Granted, Crysis and DA:O use vastly different engines, but still. Crysis has a massive, open world, and since it's optimized properly, the game still plays beautifully and smoothly. Then you take Denerim, a relatively small area in comparison to the world of Crysis, and you begin getting massive lag and/or low framerates just in one specific area? That just reeks of a poorly optimized level.

Two completely different kinds of games. As impressive as Crysis looks there is less going on at once on the screen compared to Dragon Age Origins in many areas. FPS games are generally much less demanding than something like DAO which has lots of things on a screen at once along with lighting, shadows and particle effects constantly. .

And i wouldn't say Crysis is optimised brilliantly the textures are often screwed so even when playing on a decent rig objects pop up out of nowhere when the texture loads in.

Basically, I just mean that one game has huge, open areas and runs extremely well because it's properly optimized. Another game has a much smaller area but runs absolutely terrible because it isn't properly optimized. It only occurs in one location, nowhere else in the game. Crysis might not be the best example, but it was just that: an example. Large areas with tons of lighting, shadows, physx, and it runs smooth. But a tiny area like Denerim's marketplace and it runs very badly, even with high end rigs. Something is definitely wrong with Denerim.

Edit: I notice you don't have the Ultimate Edition, but the OP and I both do. For some reason the problem with Denerim is much more pronounced with the UE, so it might not be as obvious a problem for you.

It depends.  First off, as others have observed, DAO is very CPU-intensive.  A lot of things you'd think would be handled by the graphics card (including Physx) is acutally handled by the CPU.  You're using a Core 2 Quad chip... it's a great chip... it's been on the market for two years now and still sells well.  But it is not going to be able to match the power of your high-end Nvidia card, calculation for calculation.  With most games, you can have a mid-level CPU like that and use a bad-ass video card to make games sing along.  With DAO's engine... there are limitations to that scenario.

So Moondoggie's advice about lowering some settings is appropriate... but you're not taking it easy on your GPU, it's your CPU.

There may be some tweaks that can help even out performance.  Can you tell us what resolution you're playing at, what's the max frequency of your monitor (60 Hz or 120 Hz, for example) and what, if any, "enhancements" you have enabled on the Nvidia control panel?
