Despite what the tooltip says, Vulnerability Hex apparently reduces mental resistance by 20 points (non-scaling) according to the code.

Earthquake can mass-shatter, but the odds are not very good.

thanks Discobird. good to know. according to your code parsing it does not reduce Physical Resistance at all though, right?

Great guide for mapping out my mage. You make some great points here and I glad I found the guide. Keep updating it as you learn more please.

I'd love some updates to this based on 1.02. Blizzard is much less effective. Cone of Cold was nerfed, but still good. Force Field is still fine - not as good as it might have been but not bad. Crushing Prison, though, is no longer worth it - both hold time and damage were reduced. In game play, it barely lasts long enough to immobilize an enemy.

just something about fade shroud, it also increases mana regen, which helps offset the drain from certain skills.

Hm, I wouldnt give Animated Dead 5/5 since it resets every zoning/loading. With a game that has so many zoning it gets pretty tedious.

Paralysis line gets resisted on nightmare a LOT btw.

- class Combos

AW+BM here things get more tricky... there are lot of claims about the uber AW+BM... stronger than a fighter with the same casting potential as a mage... well this is not true, remember that a BM can heal himself just with blood sacrifice and that the heal is for 100 hps. how good is AW+BM mostly depend by the option you chose and how you use it

- option1
imo is quite bad... a frontline warrior in full armor who cant be healed and spend a load of hps everytime he cast is quite a fail in my eyes,,, sure you can cast using hps and pop out of bm mode to get heals but then why not just to boost will and dont risk to kill yourself with spells and get benefit from group heals or a fast healing spell/potion?

Actually, it works very well.  There is particularity of how blood magic works. When BM mode is on, you still use mana for sustainables. Normally shimmering shield drains mana continuously in combat, and will deactivate itself when mana is dry. Interestingly, the constant mana drain from shimmering shield will NOT cause it deactivate once blood magic mode is on. This means an AW/BM can have shimmering shield constantly on in battle, making you impervious as a tank.

To me it looks like you rated the knockdown spells too low (both earthquake and fireball). Not hitting your own party members with fireball even in a melee and hitting at least 2-3 enemies really is not all that hard. Inferno have an inherit knockdown, follow up with earthquake and the enemies rarely make it out. Also the weapon enchanting spells are probably rated way to high. There is no way flame weapons are better than lightning for example (while lightning is given the same value as weakness). Shock and Fire should also have been the same... Personally I think all the AOE spells (tempest, blizzard, inferno, death cloud) are too overpowered given how stupid the AI is and as such I won't use them (after my first playthrough anyway), they all deserve a 5. Also I am a bit shocked at Blood Sacrifice getting 5/5. There is no way it is as powerful as blizzard. The 4th tier spirit healer spell is stupid on wynne as she can easily regain her mana for free and the battle is most likely over by the time her mana goes down a second time..

As the poster above me said, AW + BM is pretty nuts. You start without armor(or rather spellpower and willpower boosting robes), cast down most of your mana, then either switch into armor to tank or turn on blood magic to use your health or both. Once health goes down you can just turn off blood magic and get healed again. By then some of your mana should have come back so you can cast some more spells (though if you had enough sustainables on, maybe not). Either way at the cost at a bit (or maybe a lot) extra micromanagement you get a lot more flexibility and power.

Rating spells from 1 to 5? That only ever works for generalist mages, who are forced to pick between apples and oranges.

1 to 5 is indeed quite a limited scope. 1 should probably be equal to this spell does nothing towards improving your chances of winning the game, basic staff attack is generally better while 5 should be something like: this makes the game easy on nightmare (and quite a few spells do).

Actually, I'd say flaming weapons is worth quite a bit more than Shock. I typically see it doing ~11 damage a swing--with three melee, there's no way Shock or whatever it's called can keep up. Plus, it's essentially free if you activate it after casting something else. Fire in general is superior to the lightning line because it does more damage and fireball has the CC effect. Draining mana/stamina is less valuable in my experience.

Inferno knocks people down...? I can't say I've ever seen that happen.

That said, this thread is four months old and the OP is pretty outdated, given that some of these spells have even been patched.

Didn't stop to check. This thread is indeed quite old.

I've also never seen Earthquake shatter something.

I can't believe inferno is rated so low on your guide. My usual technique is glyph of repulsion at chockepoints then burn the crap out of mobs. Open area? Paralyze exploision then burn them.

fire resistant mobs? Mana clash. Easy peezy.

I'm aware that the thread is old but I was hoping if the OP could post some AW builds and strats as well. I've seriously been considering rolling a new mage ever since I made my Morrigan a AW and she single handedly offtanked an elite while still tossing up emergency heals. And also, heavy gear looks a whole lot better than mage cloth, blah :P

Wow, great guide with all spells included and rated for effectiveness. Just what I needed to reference for building a Mage.

btw, main reason to take AW for me is to spare a char the painful embarrassment of the Mage hats
