That would work fine. There's absolutely no reason why it wouldn't.

Respec Allistair to a 2hander if you don't want to waste his tanking points.

if you mean the main being a warrior than no that pary would suck because it has no damage dealing mage.

My first playthrough was almost identical, except I was a 2H warrior and Alister was the S&B tank.

Any combination of party members works just fine.
If people can solo the game you can do it with any party.

You don't need a damage dealing Mage. I did fine without one - Healing mage myself.
Your setup should work, no problem. Though make Alistair a damage warrior.

I would also not recommend having Alistair as a sword/shield user if your main is going to be. Inflicting damage is as important as absorbing it.

that party would be fine, dont listen to that guy talking about needing a damage dealer mage, hes just bitter.
people have already beat this game with only 1 mage being wynn as a healer.
some people just fail at life.

That party wouldn't "suck", it would be less effective than having Morrigan instead of Alistair though, but it's possible. I myself usually play with Alistair, Wynne and Leliana/Zevran, my mage being a healer/ccer.

You definitely don't need a DPS Mage for anything in this game. Period.

That party works fine. I played through on Hard using my PC (tanking warrior), Sten (DPS), Leliana (to pick boxes), and Wynne. Wynne is completely viable as a "damage dealing mage" especially in mass enemy encounters.
The only difference between Sten and Allistair is damage, but Allistair can end up with a fine DPS spec by the end of the game. You can also do the game quite well with two tanking characters (and that might even be advisable on some mass enemy encounters), though this will make boss fights take a bit longer.

90 percent of the time thats my setup but I take Morrigan for a spin now and then just to see some flashy spells and dialogue.

ya its doable but its soo much easier with a damage dealing mage. its almost like playing on an easier difficulty without actually changing it. and i actually did the final battle without her so ya i beat the game without one too. still would have been twice as easy with her.

Why would you want the game to be easier?

That party is nearly ideal. I would grab Cone of Cold with Wynn but it isn't mandatory. Two shield tanks rock. When one starts to fold the other can taunt a boss off. back and forth. It is a common MMO tactic and it works here. I am running on hard and, for fun party composition, I respecced Oghren into sword and board (everything else just the way they were, just switched to sword and board).
What I WILL say is this: all of the party members being super good people makes their banter markedly less fun.
