So Im currently in my second Playthrough and trying (but failing) to rivalmance Isabela.

I am currently at the beginning of Act 2 and she is about 1/3 of the way to Rivalry, I went agressive on all of her conversations in Act 1 always gaining some rivalry points, and tried to take her to places where she could get some rivalry (refused to hand over potion, helped gyslain, etc) the only thing I did not do was let the Magistrate's son go.

Anyway now when I go to talk to her at the beginning of act 2, I get friendship with her no matter what I choose <_<, If I flirt I get TONS of friendship (+25) and if I do not I get only +5, now my question is if I dont flirt with her can I still initiate the rivalmance later? and why am I getting frienship regardless of what I say? :pinched: is it a bug or is it as intended?

Note: The conversation in question is the very first one of act 2 where she says she got a lead on the relic.

As far as I know, you HAVE to flirt with Isabela in that convo to initiate romance. It sucks, I know. Are you on PC? You could use the console to add some rivalry points. I do think it's a bug.

You have to take the 25 friendship to flirt with Isabela if you want to rivalry romance her. If you are having trouble getting enough rivalry points, I suggest looking at the Isabela FAQ linked in my sig for a fairly comprehensive friendship/rivalry guide for acts 1 and 2.

I managed to flirt with her and only gain fifteen friend points when I did the rivalmance. Not sure what I did differently, maybe by taking all the "nice diplomatic" choices except for the one flirty choice?

Thanks for the guide it is quite handy, alas I see that for this to work I will need to bring her along in my party, grrrr she is useless and I am also a DW Rogue, I was able to max friendship without taking her anywhere in my Warrior playthrough, oh well going to have to deal with the added difficulty

You don't need to bring her along for all of the combat, she mostly just needs to be there for the conversation choices. But then again, that's kind of how it should be anyhow; it would seem odd to me to fall in love with somebody you didn't spend much time with, especially if you disagree on so many things (rivalry).

Well I assume that I'm seeing my companions off-screen as well, otherwise I have to question the psychology of Hawke as he would then only be able to bond with people after engaging in mass murder

It's a semantic interpretation thing. In any case, I never had a problem bringing Isabela along for everything, since I love her banter. She's not bad in a fight either once you get steady hand and sea legs, so that kicks in around level 11 or so.

Regarding the bonding over mass murder thing... psychologists have done studies, people who undergo traumatic/extreme experiences together tend to bond with each other over them. It isn't perfect, of course, but it does explain quite a few things.
