I've taken to assuming that DA2 is just a really long, really stretched out origin story (which explains so very, very many of the problems people have with the story, not that it justifies them) and that we're going to have to wait for DLC or whatever, probably set during the missing three years between Meredieth and Varric's interrogation, for Hawke to actually become the most important person in Thedas.

Annoying, isn't it?

Hawke isn't the most important person in Thedas. She never was. She was never intended to be.

The developers have said that's a phrase marketing came up with and it had nothing to do with their concept of the character.

Actually, Cassandra does believe that Hawke was the most important player. Only for Varric to show her how clueless the Champion was.

Everyone in Kirkwall carried the Idiot Ball to some extent. Blame the Tevinter Hellmouth. It's not like anyone even does anything if you tell Cullen or Elthina about Anders plotting something in the Kirkall Chantry, so I guess the Champion isn't alone in doing nothing (I guess abominations are exempt from the "lazy principle").

Speaking of Cullen, does anyone else find it odd that Cullen is willing to put a stop to Meredith when she threatens the Champion (as opposed to the Right of Annulment itself)?

At no time does Cassandra refer to Hawke as the most important anything.

Varric says she thinks the Hawke is the one person who could put the world back together, which is not about what Hawke has done or is but what Hawke could do.

Cassandra thinks that Hawke was the main instigator / mastermind of the entire disaster. And then Varric tells her that wasn't the case.

Wait, you can tell Cullen or Elthina about Anders' bomb planting (though of course Hawke doesn't know)

As for Cullen objecting to Meredith, he had been wondering if he was serving the Templars or only the KC with every order she gave. Meredith's threaten of the Champion was what proved to him "This b!tch is freaking insane!"

Agree there. My Hawke seemed to do a lot of barking and Orsino/Meredith/Elthina just did a lot of: "Lalalala! I am not listening!" in response. My Hawke felt pretty dang useless and not-so-important :pinched:

The developers never refuted the claim before DA2 came up, though, and some even addressed why Hawke could be the "most important person in Thedas" despite the Warden's accomplishments in Ferelden, so I won't place all the blame on marketting. As Hawke, we are denied any opportunity to change the world around us, despite Hawke being a Human Noble with wealth, and none of our choices having a real impact because we're going down a linear progression.

Yes, David Gaider did. I believe he said it was similar to Oghren being 'everyone's favorite companion.'

The developers who were addressing how Hawke could be the "most important person in Thedas" despite the Warden's accomplishments didn't.

to go off topic, I found it hard to customize my Hawke to anything other than the default appearance. It just felt right and was what I wanted him to look like.

Plus a balding Hawke wasn't exactly inspiring to me.

Just like for all the Origin stories, I always customized them to one appearance all the time (depending on race and gender), even if they are different origins but the same race.

Meaning my Dwarf Noble and my Dwarf Commoner have the same look (my profile pic thingy is my DN, noble Xanthos Aeducan)

anyway, back on topic. I never once believed that Hawke was the "single most important person in Thedas" when I first heard that. He can be an important person in all of Thedas, but not the most important person. That was just incredibly unbelievable.

This topic has swung around so many times that every time I visit this thread everyone is talking about something different.

But on the topic of Hawke, I have to say I liked playing as him/her but I was also frustrating by my lack of impact. It's for that reason that I want Hawke to return in DA 3. I figured "most important person in Thedas" was probably an exaggeration but Hawke does kind of feel like one of the least import PC's in Bioware stories ever. He didn't really change the world, he just inspired other people to do it.

I don't see this as a problem with Hawke though. It seems like a problem with the execution of the story.

You can tell Cullen and Elthina (and Cullen even knows it's Anders before you name him), but neither of them do anything about it.

About Cullen, I can see your point if Hawke sided with the templars, but if Hawke sides with the mages, it seems odd that he'd take exception to killing him if Hawke is killing his way to freedom. Unless he also follows the rules of Torchwood...

lol it's the beard that did it. My beard makes me look considerably older. And when I shave I look really young.

But I liked default Man Hawke. I'd tinker around with Female Hawke if it wouldn't be such a cruel injustice to BethanyImage IPB

It's a spin-off of Doctor Who where all the characters were bisexual.

How would his sexuality matter in that case?

Fereldan politics is tricky as we have many possible endings from Origins to change that. maybe Orlais wanting to invade Fereldan has nothing to do with who the ruler ends up being...

That was what I was thinking, but hey Cullen did have a secret crush on Female Amell Mage, so maybe he has a secret crush on Male Hawke.

I can just see the Cullen lovers clamoring for "We want Cullen and Male Hawke romance fanfic!!!"

I'm coming up with theories to explain why Cullen would have an issue with Meredith wanting Hawke dead if he's killing his way out of the Gallows, since it means he's killed templars as well. And I remembered that he fell for an Amell in Origins.

Because Cullen's thinking "**** she'll go after me next won't she...."

Honestly, maybe he at first agreed with the Annulment because he still believed in Meredith being sane, but after hearing that Hawke should be killed he recognized how wrong she had been.
