In Act II, during the Qunari fighting, the Grey Wardens are in Kirkwall on their own mission(if you made Bethany or Carver a warden). They mention that what they are doing is too important to help with the Qunari situation plus they have to be neutral. And then in Act 3 they are investigating the Deep Roads areas from Bertrand's expeditions. And initially they are close to Kirkwall in Act I in the Deep Roads when you send Bethany/Carver to them.

What is their mission, what are they doing in the Deep Roads and Kirkwall? And what exactly do they do in between blights? Are they following darkspawn and investigating where the next blight will pop up or are they lingering around waiting for the next one to happen? They seem to be close to Kirkwall a lot in those those 7 years. Exactly how long and far do the Deep Roads span? Did the wardens like Stroud and Nathaniel enter the Deep Roads in Amaranthine and then pop up in Kirkwall? I think it's safe to say Orzammar is directly btw Fereldan and Orlais and Kal Shirok under Amaranthine and then that Ancient Thaig in Bertrand's expedition underneath Kirkwall. I think they need a map Deep Roads to see where all the discovered Thaigs are exactly in comparison to the landmasses in Thedas.

Good idea, I would really like a map that shows where all the thaigs are in comparison to where the above ground cities are, just to get some perspective.

Kal Hirol is near Ameranthine. We do not know where Kal Shirok is. Although, I get the impression it is somewhere near Rivain. It is my understanding the Deep Roads used to span hundreds of miles, and cover most of Thedas. Since the dark spawn invaded much of that has fallen into disrepair. So I would assume that there are "pockets" of Deep Roads some of which still connect.

I would think between blights that the grey wardens would make frequent trips into the Deep Roads to monitor and assess the dark spawn numbers, learn what they can about the dark spawn, and try new tactics to eliminate as many as possible. At least that is what I'd be doing if I were Commander of the Grey.

They're probably just racking up EXP from darkspawn kills.

Yes, we do. It is shown in the Thedas map. It lies between Orlais and Anderfels.

Either they were there for reasons we'll discover in DA3 or it was just an excuse to let you save your sibling and encounter them later. I figure they're about equally probable.

cool didn't realize some of dwarven cities were on the map already. you're right patricia, i meant to say Kal Hirol.

There will definitely be more to the Wardens than just saving your sibling. Architect alive or not, there are intelligent talking darkspawn wandering around unless the disciples that were killed in Awakening were the only ones left.

My first play through I did not make Carver a GW (I left his jerkface self at home) and they still showed up. Not sure if it's relevant or not, but there it is!

I'm guessing it's some big thing that will hopefully *fingers crossed* be explained in future DLC/sequel. If Alistair stays with the Warden, he will appear during the Qunari invasion and saying that he was doing something important for the Wardens and that he made a pinky promise about it lol (had to youtube it cos he is king in both of my DA;O imports). Plus if you bring Beth/Carver and Anders to the Deep Roads expedition, Anders will mention that Stroud wasn't there to look for him, the runaway Warden who stole his map but for something else. And then Nate will appear in Act 3 and said that the Warden send him there and that extra coins is for him if he doesn't tell anyone about it. The Wardens just keep going back to this particular part of the Deep Roads so maybe there's something big going on there...

Ditto with Bethany. I left her at home but the Wardens still turned up to help out a bit when I was fighting the Qunari in Act II.

Weren't they there to remind you that somewhere in Thedas there's something interesting fgoing on? You know, just to really rub it in?

if you have uploaded you awakenings profile there is a part where you go looking for nathaniel in the deep roads, then meet up with your brother/sister (if made warden) and find out actually grey wardens have followed your own expedition and have an interest in that particular thaig. They have gone deeper than anyone else has been with the help of the intelligent darkspawn etc.

Which leads me to believe the architect had something to say about that idol and where it came from and/or what it's purpose is.

It might be different with someone else's decisions in awakening though, this is what I had.

Na... they're just searching for a razor blade that is sharp enough to kill the evil that is Stroud's beard.

Yea, I know that they are interested in the Thaig because of Bartrand's expedition. When does Nathaniel mention going in deeper with the help of intelligent darkspawn? Have they recruited some of the talking darkspawn to help them? I have to load back to that quest. I forgot what he said exactly I helped the Architect in Awakening. All Nathaniel said in mine is that there should be less Darkspawn because we helped the Architect.

Perhaps the Architect is related to the idol somehow. Didn't think of that. But come to think of it there are no Darkspawn at all in that Primeval Thaig. Just Shades and Protheans.

I want to know what their mission is. When Carver or Bethany become Wardens they say they can't tell us what they're doing in kirkwall. :(

I guess in Awakening, whether you kill that talking Darkspawn who warns you of the mother's assault on the Vigil. He may be working with the Wardens.

That was weird, actually. Nathaniel mentioned that my Warden had killed the architect, yet still alluded to the mysterious "allies"... whom I assume are the intelligent darkspawn.

Though, given that the architect left all his research behind and the Wardens (obviously) have access to as much Warden blood as they want... it's possible that they're awakening darkspawn themselves. Albeit to serve as scouts and meatshields, rather than out of any desire to free the darkspawn population. And certainly not on the scale the Architect wanted.

I think they might have been investigating the thing that turned out to be Legacy. Or something related to that, anyway.

Related perhaps, but it's not the events in Legacy that are their focus, remember, you can play Legacy any time you want and even when completed they will still show up.

My own guessings is that they are trying to find out what exactly darkspawn are. My own theory is that all the ancient magics are related. We knoe from Coryphius that the dwarven empire was at it's biggest when he lived, that means alongside the Tevinter Imperium which then spanded the whole known surface world.
We also know that the Dwarves in Cadahash Thaig and perhaps the rest of the dwarves around the amaranthine ocean, housed the refugee elves after the fall of arlathan, we learn about that from Which Hunt and the Dalish Origin.

Duncan claims that the Eluvian in that Origin is of tevinter origin, but it is not. Tevinter expanded at the time of Arlathan's greatness and sought to claim the elven magic for themselves. When they took Arlathan and tried using the mirror they became tainted as we see it in DA:O Dalish Origin.

Now, as i mentioned before the Dwarven Empire traded with the Elves during this time too, so they have been in contact too. My own guess is that it is lyrium that bind the connections to the fade, the elves will have traded surface valuables with the dwarves to construct the Eluvians and sheildings against demon s and spirits.
Tevinter wanted to use Demon s and spirits and this is why they were interested in the eluvians, which is portals like Morrigan explains. Portals that uses lyrium infused magic to channel a body through the fade and make them appear on the other side. As we know there are no time or bordering limits in the fade, that means that this could actually be possible in theory, but it will have required strong magical talents, which we know all elves posessed by this time.

/done.

I apologize for bad english, but this is my theory of the grand picture :3
