After finishing ME1 for the first time (yeah, got late to the party :P ) I decided to replay it so I could level past 40 and to do a few things differently. Most importantly, I want to save Ashley this time around, and probably romance her over Liara.

However I heard you can import your character from ME1 to ME2. I was wondering 2 things:

1 - what exactly transfers, either significantly or not?

2 - if you play Paragon on the first playthrough then replay again all Renegade; or if at first you save Kaidan and on other playthroughs go for Ashley; and any excluding type of choice like those... in case these data influences ME2 at all, which version of the story gets transfered? The choices from last playthrough?

If at all possible, please do not spoil ME2, as I still have to play it!! :)

Every time you start a new game in ME2 you have the choice to start fresh (as if you've never played) and have the default set of circumstance be used (i.e. wrex dies, anderson is NOT the councilor, etc.)

Or you can import an ME1 save. Any save that you have where you have completed the game. So, every time you complete the game you'll have another save to choose as the import. The best choice being a level 60 with all the choices made that you want. Paragon or Renegade doesn't matter so much except for the outcome of the choices you made in those roles.

Finally you can do a New Game + where you start over with your ME2 Sheppard at the level you completed the game, same class, etc.

Without a level 60 import from ME1 it's impossible to purchase everything in game. So, you'll need to be careful with your credits in ME2. However, if you purchase all the DLC missions, then you should be able to purchase most if not all of everything available throughout the game.

For me, the most important things were saving my LI (ash or kaiden), wrex living, lvl 60, the rich achievment and saving the council. You get to choose anderson or udina regardless so that's not too much of an issue.

So, go through as many runs of ME1 as you can stand with each having made different scenarios. You can then use each one as an import into ME2 to start a new game and see how your decisions pan out.

If you don't want to tough it out through that many iterations of ME1 there's the MassEffect Saves DB where you can DL other's saves and use them instead.

Many thanks for the info. I'm not sure if I understood tho (as I'm only starting my second playthrough), but it seems like that: if I play the game from levels 1-40 saving ashley and killing wrex; then I play 40-50 saving kaidan and not killing wrex; in the end I should be able to pick from 2 profiles (lv 40 Shepard or Lv 50 Shepard) to start my ME2 game?

Also secondary but interesting - the romances options are carried through and/or influence ME2 at all?

Exactly.  Each save will be independent in ME2, but will have the same name and looks(providing you don't change it) while showing up different levels, whatever you were at the end of each game.
John Shepard level 40
John Shepard level 55
As examples.

ME1 romances other than Liara have limited effect on ME2, and unknown effect on ME3.
Liara with the LotSB DLC has some dialog about romance in it, whether you were faithful or not, but no huge effect, and of course still unkown effect in ME3.
