Also, this: Will the import issues from Awakening, Witch Hunt etc. be fixed in the patch? or will it be fixed in the DA2 patch?

I asked a similar question of Luke in the DA2 PC forum a while back, and he indicated that it was hoped to fix that issue in a DA2 patch, so people wouldn't have to do a complete replay of Awakening to get the desired save.

I can't tell you how happy I am to hear this and that DA:O hasn't been forgotten. Thrilled actually. Thanks for letting us know!

*doing a happy dance over here*

For the game:
  • An official patch that fixes the dialogue bugs, slideshow bugs and plotflag bugs would be spectacular.  Ejoslin and Terra_Ex have done a wonderful job with mods that fix a majority of them, but there is only so much that can be done with the toolset (ZDF and MRP for their mods and list of fixes). Some of these are minor, but some of them can crash the game (elven alienage has one for city elf origin)
  • Fixing broken loot drops such as the Ancient Elven boots that don't appear in the Lothering Chantry as they should and the rest of the Blackblade armor set in Awakening that doesn't drop as intended.
  • Spells and abilities that do not work as they should: Blood control does not do damage on resist, arrow of slaying does not apply level-based damage, haste adds time to aim with a bow instead of subtracting it, mana cleanse adds mana instead of subtracting it, items that boost health regeneration and monetary gain provide no boost, magesbane/soldiersbane add mana/stamina instead of subtracting it, party buffs do not apply to newly summoned/resurrected party members until they are re-cast, item set bonus sometimes does not apply to party members with party change, swift slve adds to aiming time instead of subtracting from it, miasma and other sustainables turn themselves off when changing areas (yes, there does seem to be a pattern of mis-coded addition/subtraction)
Toolset: Frequent CTD on windows 7 boxes.

Will this be the final patch? Not to be sniffy, I'm just curious.

The only major problem I have with Dragon Age that you, the tech folks, can resolve with a patch is that the game crashes sometimes when you pull out of the inventory.

I did a search and found this (http://social.biowar...99832/2#6640007) - I haven't bothered with the solution yet, though. I can confirm that I'm also using an ATI card (Radeon HD 6800) that is mentioned in the thread, if it is a hardware issue. It happens so rarely, and I F5 (quick save) often, so it doesn't disturb my experience "that" much. The final boss is a nightmare with this crash, although they might be unrelated... But anyways, the game crashes a few times, from time to time, against the archdemon.

And the big problem in Awakenings (if you can fix those) is the Silverite Mine bug - losing your equipment: http://dragonage.wik...erite_Mine#Bugs

Other issues I have is with the toolset, which I'm surprisingly glad that you even bother with - as it is a byproduct of the game. But any patches would help a lot!

Interesting to hear that Origins will be patched this far out, and after DA2 came out as well. Good on you guys. All of the issues mentioned in RaenImrahl's thread are performance issues. Any chance that we'll get some of the story and item bugs still around in Origins and DLC fixed, such as some of the broken ending slides and such? Would be pretty neat. But I suppose any support Origins gets at this point is an unexpected bonus.

Another thing I'd like to see get fixed with DA:O is this odd, random pausing that occurs constantly throughout the game. Indoors and outdoors. You'll be walking along, then suddenly the game pauses for maybe 5-10 seconds. The ambient audio and music continues just fine, but otherwise everything else stops. You can't move. Then it unfreezes and acts fine for a while. Sometimes it's better and sometimes it's worse though. I know at times when I play, it may only happen a few times in an hour. Other times, it will happen repeatedly and become quite frustrating. I have tried the DA2 demo and this problem does not seem to exist there. So maybe whatever was changed there can be found and fixed in DA:O as well.

Edit: Here's an old thread where someone else had the same problem. I tried the fixes listed therein, but none have helped me.

Animositisomina, if I'm not wrong then that's the memory leak bug - it's also present (or was?) in Dragon Age II. It's common too, it seems: http://social.biowar...8/index/87363/1

I believe some of us are having problems with the DLC achievements in the game and autologin feature, might be worth taking a look.

DLC Achievements - the achievements (and supposedly said items) are unlocked in our online profile, but a "semi-unlocked" status in the game. The icon is lighted up, has a date when it was achieved, but has a status of Locked. The effect is that we have to get the achievements again before creating a new character or loading the items to an existing one. Once the achievements are unlocked for the nth time, then should save those new/existing chars.

Autologin always have a please try again popping out, and have to input the pw again.

Hope these gets included.

No, that thread is about long load times, which apparently get worse over time. The problem I'm talking about is actual pauses while you play, as though you stopped the game during combat. It only lasts a few seconds, but can happen repeatedly. They're two different things.

I can confirm this one as well, both the achievement issue and autologin. I've also noticed that in DragonAge.ini, NucleusOnlineLoginAuthenticationToken seems to be setting itself to (UNASSIGNED) after you exit the game. This seems to be related to autologin. I had an old backup with my token still set, so I copied/pasted it into my DragonAge.ini and set the file to read-only. When I did that, it was no longer getting reset to (UNASSIGNED) and the autologin feature continued to work properly.

So if you happen to have a backup with your token still set, copy/paste it into your DragonAge.ini where it says NucleusOnlineLoginAuthenticationToken=[your token here] and then set the file to read-only. That should help for the time being.

First and formost, remove the phone home DRM at the core of the nearly week long outage on a single player game!

Then produce a version for 64bit OSes that allows the use of more than 2Gb of RAM, which may not cure the memory leak crashes that people are experiencing but should at least slow down the number of CTDs that occur.

And look very hard at EA customer support and server monitoring, as this was a disaster that compounded the situation.

I second this motion, particularly with regards to the DRM being removed.  Image IPB

Edit: from an Amazon.com, 1-star review for the Ultimate Edition below.

"Terrible, terrible, terrible. The original Dragon Age Origins was an excellent game, but this is garbage. You get two disks with the game, but you have to create a login to play the additional add on content. I did all that and it still doesn't work, in fact once you create a login the extra game content suddenly become unauthorized and you can't even play the game. I've never seen anything so ridiculous. You would assume if you paid for the content it would be available on the extra disk that comes with the game, but you can't even install the extra content included with the game that way. This is absurd. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. IT IS A WASTE OF MONEY"

Communication from Bioware is the fist thing that comes to mind Rob. My experience with this game has been the worst i have ever had, and feeling left in the dark didn't help - nether did EA tech support. Your post here is what id like to see more of.

As for bugs and the like, I'd like to see game breaking issues like ctd issues given priority, basically as a customer id just like to get my moneys worth - don't care if the patches take a long time as long as they do what their meant to do and don't create new bugs - mana clash comes to mind.

Glade to see DA:O has not been forgotten, thanks Rob.

What would you like to see me doing to help? Please use this thread to help brainstorm and discuss some constructive solutions that could be applied.

Thanks,
Rob

Well my own experiences these past 2 weeks (I bought Dragon Age at launch, played through multiple times, but didn't buy Awakenings when it came out, as I was on to an MMO by then) has been simply awful.

I'm pretty sure when I originally played DA, the patch was 1.01b.  I could be wrong, though, but I had pretty much played through it all by the end of 2009 (I don't know the dates of all the patches off the top of my head).

I had very little problems (from my memory) playing 3 or 4 characters through the entire game.

A couple weeks ago (a day before the major DLC authentication error, I think), I reinstalled with the idea of playing through again getting ready for Dragon Age 2 (I had purchased Awakenings at this point, but not installed it).

I installed DA, and patch 1.04, and the result could possibly be the buggiest experience I have ever had in gaming.  I may be exaggerating, but not by much.  Gentilivi's research simply hasn't triggered Haven unlocking on 2 of the 3 characters I got to that point.  Leliana's romance is bugged in the exact way it's supposed to be fixed by patch 1.04 (could be 1.03, but I believe it's the 1.04 notes that has this).  Constant crashing and massive slowdowns, etc.

This is a different (and much better) PC than the one I used nearly 2 years ago,  Every other game that was installed on that old one and is now currently installed on this new one runs the same or better than before, except Dragon Age (so I don't think it's hardware).  Those games would be Starcraft 2, World of Warcraft, Oblivion, Football Manager 2011 (vs 2009 on the old one - processor heavy game), and also I have Rift MMO installed on this new one at max settings and it runs just fine.

But, honestly, Dragon Age: Origins runs like ass.  I hit F5 after EVERY SINGLE ACTION because of the fear of random crashing.

Yesterday I finished a playthrough (having crashed on the load of the cutscene at the very end after the battle and the auto-save), and did an import to Witch Hunt.  I didn't play anything, though, just got a save and stopped for the day.  Later, I did finally install Awakenings and then began to play through Witch Hunt, and it seemed really smooth (which was shocking, to be honest).  Maybe an hour after starting, I remembered about patch 1.04, and checked the notes.  Saw this:

"Note on Installing Awakening to a version of DA:O already patched to 1.04 [PC only]

If you install the 1.04 patch prior to installing Awakening, you must
run the 1.04 patch installer again after the Awakening install is
complete."

And of course installed the patch after saving and exiting.

Instantly had issues.

At the point I installed patch 1.04 I was somewhere in the Thaig, nearly complete (think I had 3 of the essences).  Had a crash before getting to the end, reloaded and then found the end spot.  Of course on the restart Finn was no longer in my party (though he was there and did his thing, so it all worked).  But I exited the Thaig after the cutscene and crashed on the load to the new zone (meaning had to do the final fight again, as i had forgotten to save before hitting the exit portal).  Managed to get through Witch Hunt, though.

Started Leliana's soon after.  Only 2 crashes.  Finished it.

Started the Darkspawn one just now.  Was going fine until I got to the Alienage.  As soon as the first combat started, crash.  That's where I am now.

My system now vs the old one is Windows 7 vs XP, 6 gigs ram vs 4, a GTS 450 vs 8800 GT, and my processor is 2 years newer (don't actually know the specs on the old one offhand).

Patch notes that seem to be 100% incorrect for me:

Fixed pick-pocketing. Characters were successfully stealing, but not receiving any items. - the thief quest in denerim I can't complete.

A number of memory leaks have been fixed, which will reduce the frequency of crashes - I don't know if this is the cause of my crashes, but I seem to average a crash every hour or 2 - that can't be acceptable?

Some players were experiencing increasingly long load times. A major cause of this problem has been fixed.  - Load times increase over time (seems to indicate an imminant crash?)

Leliana's personal plot can now be completed if the player substantially
increased her approval (through gifts) before talking to her.

In rare cases, enemy corpses were selectable when they contained no loot. This no longer occurs.

I suspect things like Gentlivi's Research not adding Haven is due to something related to the memory leak, as I would have the item in my inventory, but the map location doesn't appear (I abandoned one game, used console to complete the Urn quest in another).  I also have had, twice, the "Favors for blah blah" quest stop because when I go to the Forest to fire the warning arrow, and then have the fight, the quest tells me to inspect the bodies for something, but that triggers nothing.  This was on 3 different characters.

None of these issues are anything I remember from approx 18 months ago in playing in 1.01b.  I know this game didn't used to be this buggy, but my god it's simply a mess now.  I can only blame the patches after 1.01b, but I guess it could be a hardware compatibility issue?  But I have no issues with any other installed games....

Oh I have these pauses quite often, also.  They happen during pretty much anthing - walking, combat, standing around doing nothing....

The tip/file from akanounnikoff on page 31 of this thread (think this link is directly to his post) seems to be helping. Not a a crash or noticeable slowdown through the entire Golem DLC.

I'm not sure if this was directed at me, but if it was: I can't use that file since I only have 2GB of ram, so it wouldn't make any difference in my case. Thanks for the suggestion though.

If anything, it might help Bioware track down the problem and resolve it properly :)

Animositisomina I have had this issue myself, normally it is caused when I change Affinity on my cpu to 2 cores running. I don't know if this might be a similar issue you might have going on but, if it is I can tell you this is causing this from personal experience. I have to do this when I go thru the Circle of Magi quest line mostly because I suffer a lot of CTD issues during this part of the game. I was able to correct some of the CTD changing CPU Affinity(causes the freeze),using a -dx9 tag line on the program execute line, and also using a program called Game Booster to free up some of my ram. I hope this might help you.

I have a Core 2 Duo, so reducing the affinity just makes it worse for me. I'll try the -dx9 command line parameter, see if that helps at all. The game already runs in DX9 though, so I'm not sure why it would. And I've used Game Booster in the past. It was a decent little program until they started charging money for it and turned it into adware. Haven't used it since.

Hadn't seen this mentioned, so here's another bug I'd like to see fixed:

I just finished Awakening for the first time. After defeating the final boss, and after all the story wrap-up messages played, the cutscene with the boss repeats over and over and over. If you hit escape several times quickly, it will eventually bypass this loop and exit back to the main menu. I got the achievement for finishing Awakening, but I have no idea if my final save state was recorded properly or not. It's mentioned on the Dragon Age wiki, so it seems to be a fairly common bug.

Our in studio hardware is somewhat limited compared to the enumerable combinations of PC setups these days. We've got access to compatability labs that pretty much have everything but that obviously takes longer to test and requires very specific instructions on how to produce the issue.

The majority of us test on win7 x64 but whenever we see hardware issue we contact users to get config info and then attempt to replicate those specs.

Thanks, Luke.  Good to know... those who are quick to simply blame a conflict with DAO and Win 7 should take note.  The issue is much more complex than just that, obviously.

Two thoughts:
(1) It might help if folks could attach a text file of their system specs when reporting bugs
(2) Folks should indicate whether or not any mods are installed

Another game I play has an unofficial tech support forum in which the volunteer tech dudes require this information before any attempt at troubleshooting is made. For system specs, they ask folks to use PC WIZARD (http://www.cpuid.com.../pc-wizard.html). Just thought it might help.
