So you can be friends with your companions and become lovers if you flirt, and the rivalries aren't necessarily a bad thing seeing as you can apparently have a 'rivalmance'... what I want to know is (and I admit this is a silly question) can you miff off a companion so much that they outright hate you?

One of the silver linings of having to wait for the next patch is that I now know I don't have to dance around trying not to offend the person I want to, shall we say, badoink-a-doink.

*points at the board name* Remember not to get all spoilery.
As a side note, did you like the way they did friendship/rivalry aspect?

(is this general enough to be here?)

Questions amongst questions.

I like that.

As for your answer, I have no idea. Let BioWare do all the judging. I voted no.

I kinda prefer the DA:O way of doing the companions where you can make them so mad they eventually leave or threaten to leave. Makes the game seem more meaningful and what not. The way DA2 is isnt bad at all but im pretty sure you cant have any members leave for good unless stuff happens with quests.

Well, in DA:O they were travelling with you. In DA2 you all live in the same city. Unless you want to peeve them off so much that they slam the door in your face every time you try to visit them. That would give me hysterical giggles. Especially if it is Anders.

No welcome to the new masochistic LI game where violating their core beliefs now gains you the ability to bed them.

Maybe it's just a case of "opposites attract."  You know like Buffy and Spike.

Well, since this thread has been moved, I have to ask people not to post spoilers. I only got to the beginning of Act II. Thanks.

I prefer ME style: you gather soldiers, do a loyalty mission (or not, as in ME1), and that's the end of it. The companions in DA2 can get annoying with all that bickering and disagreeing... plus, Hawke isn't their commanding officer. He's just some guy who buys their equipment. Personally, I hate approval systems... I don't like traveling with enemies, and I'd never do that IRL, so rivalry just doesn't do it for me. It may be fun to irritate Anders, but I don't travel with him at all because of his attitude... it makes little sense that he'd follow Hawke around after some of the things he says about mages.

I'm probably just too focused on the companions liking Hawke, but it is what it is.  And it is annoying trying to keep everybody happy.

Not you cannot ever lose a companion by being a dick. There are some quests that have the possibility of losing a companion though if done a certain way.

I'm not sure which system I prefer. DAO you have to be nice to people, but you can direct them to becoming "hardened". DA2 you can be as nasty as you want. Well maybe not nasty, DA2 doesn't really have option to just be nasty in dialogue. Dialogue options are mostly strong disagreement or being judgemental of their stance. These are things which in reality can earn respect from someone, despite believing differently.

Its still kind of odd to rivalmance fenris as a blood mage though.

I like the friendship/rivalry system. In Origins it was impossible to please everyone, but in Dragon Age 2 it doesn't matter if I ****** someone off because I can go down the rivalry path instead. Tried flirting with a rival Fenris which had some pretty funny dialogue but ended up sticking with Isabela (friend). Might try a rivalmance next time.

Yes, and that relationship turned toxic fairly quickly. And it included a rape.

Some of the companions, like Isabela and Fenris, seem to live for conflict. They're just as happy whether you're in a friendship or a rivalry. I haven't tried Merrill's romance at all yet, so I can't offer any insight there, but I know that when it's a platonic rivarly, it's fairly satisfying. She gets mad at you, but she seems to know that you still love her. On some level. With Anders, he gets all pissy and it isn't much fun, at least for me. Since there's nothing he can actually do about his situation, a rivalry with him is profoundly unsatisfying. My templar Hawke tells him he screwed up. He says "Yeah, sorry." Justice takes over and tears Hawke a new one. Not pretty. I'm playing through the game again with a pro-mage Hawke just to get the taste of rivalmance Anders out of my mouth.

A couple of the companions can come across pretty hostile if you rival them but it's not the same as DAO. I had one play through when I gave Wynne rotten onions so she hated my warden and abandoned the cause.
I don't like that the friendship/rivalry locks in DA2 once it gets to 100%. I think it was better in DAO that it could still change depending on your actions even if the companion was in love with your character.

I adore rivalry/friendship system. While it's a bit flawed, I thought it was far superior to approval/disaproval or a mere 'do my mission, I'm with you' systems.
