Multiple people have reported being able to do both quests in some of their games.Forst1999 wrote...
His mentioned time in the Free Marches was before Awakening, while DAII's act I is already after this (see Anders). As Bitterfoam mentioned, there is a Quest in act 3, but it is bugged. If you get the "Fool's Gold" quest in act II, that's the sign that you wont get "Finding Nathaniel". So far the quest was bugged for me only if i imported directly from Awakening, my Golems/Witch Hunt imports were fine. Don't know if that's the reason though.

Other then that, it seems that the main requirement for seeing him in Act 3 is that he survived, and that he did not leave the Wardens. If you import a save from Origins which also went through WH and GoA DLC's, then flags get way messed up and you most likely will not get that quest. If you import the save which just went through Origins and Awakening, then you have a chance. But seems that even then you only have that chance if you took Nathaniel with you to Mother encounter. If you leave him in keep then due to import or flag bugs game may consider that those left in Vigil's Keep died. Or Nathaniel left the Wardens. Whether you have killed the Architect or not doesn't seem to affect it, although that part is bugged too - if you killed the Architect, then Nathaniel will still say that he was spared.
And you're supposed to get either Fool's Gold OR Nathaniel quest, so if you get one then you won't get another. Those who got both have simply extremely messed up flags in their game, due to import bugs.

This glitch is extremely annoying because it pretty much ruins any future DA games. I don't want the damned Architect alive, and tying his survival to Nathaniel's is beyond ridiculous. I still haven't found an answer about whether Nathaniel can show up in DA2 and NOT refer to the Architect as alive... or whether the patch addressed this at all. In every game he always says the Warden spared the Architect. I'm starting to regret not simply killing Howe in Awakening...Feranel wrote...
