This must have been discussed, but since there's no search function... Since almost every NPC you found in Ferelden has shown up in Kirkwall, I expected to also find Nathaniel (who in Awakening tells the warden that he's been in the Free marches). The time window should probably be in Act I, I think. So why didn't he appear? Or does he and I haven't noticed in two playthroughs?

Nathaniel doesn't show up except for in the Finding Nathaniel quest in Act 3 - a quest that happens to be evasive and/or bugged for most people.

His mentioned time in the Free Marches was before Awakening, while DAII's act I is already after this (see Anders). As Bitterfoam mentioned, there is a Quest in act 3, but it is bugged. If you get the "Fool's Gold" quest in act II, that's the sign that you wont get "Finding Nathaniel". So far the quest was bugged for me only if i imported directly from Awakening, my Golems/Witch Hunt imports were fine. Don't know if that's the reason though.

Multiple people have reported being able to do both quests in some of their games.

The Finding Nathaniel quest is supposed to trigger in Act 3 if both he & the Architect survived Awakenings. Otherwise you should get the Fools Gold quest in Act 2.

You have to of taken Nathaniel with you to the Architect/Mother fight in order for Nathaniel's Quest to show up. If you left him at Vigil's keep the save most likely won't import properly because of how Vigils Keep's info is handled. For some reason it considers the people left behind as dead whether or not the Keep survived.

I was able to get his mission when I loaded a save were he was in my party for the last fight against mother. Since I believe in the tactic of "kill them all" the Architect was dead in my save also. When I got the mission there was no fool's gold mission at the start of act 2 so that seems to be a clue if you will get the mission or not.

I haven't played Awakenings. Am I correct in guessing that I won't be able to see Nathaniel then.

@SilentK: Yes, you will then not see him.

Other then that, it seems that the main requirement for seeing him in Act 3 is that he survived, and that he did not leave the Wardens. If you import a save from Origins which also went through WH and GoA DLC's, then flags get way messed up and you most likely will not get that quest. If you import the save which just went through Origins and Awakening, then you have a chance. But seems that even then you only have that chance if you took Nathaniel with you to Mother encounter. If you leave him in keep then due to import or flag bugs game may consider that those left in Vigil's Keep died. Or Nathaniel left the Wardens. Whether you have killed the Architect or not doesn't seem to affect it, although that part is bugged too - if you killed the Architect, then Nathaniel will still say that he was spared.

And you're supposed to get either Fool's Gold OR Nathaniel quest, so if you get one then you won't get another. Those who got both have simply extremely messed up flags in their game, due to import bugs.

I killed the Architect, and imported my save with everyone alive. I met Nathaniel, and he said "When the Warden Commander spared the Architect..."

I was like WTF? I killed that freak!"

This glitch is extremely annoying because it pretty much ruins any future DA games.  I don't want the damned Architect alive, and tying his survival to Nathaniel's is beyond ridiculous.  I still haven't found an answer about whether Nathaniel can show up in DA2 and NOT refer to the Architect as alive... or whether the patch addressed this at all.  In every game he always says the Warden spared the Architect.  I'm starting to regret not simply killing Howe in Awakening...

You can use one of the preset backgrounds - at least the Martyr one has Nat.

So the patch actually fixed this?  That's fantastic!  Can't wait to see this for myself.  :)
