All the backgrounds can work for different alignments; it just depends on how the player wants to fill in the blanks.
Galana Shepard: Colonist/War Hero; more paragon than renegade (love the colonist side quest in ME1); she never wants another civilian to experience what she went through. Her extended family was in the medical field, and she has no sympathy or patience with doctors and researchers who abuse their patients/subjects.
Joshua Shepard: Spacer/Ruthless; more renegade than paragon; he grew up a military brat and sees many of the Alliance's and Council's policies as weakness and hypocrisy; this doesn't mean he trusts TIM though.

My first playthrough was a Vanguard class, with the background as Earthborn/Ruthless/Renegade. I preferred being a jack*** back then. Nowadays, my playthroughs, whether they're human-dominant or not, tend to lean towards the Paragon path. (Major choices I go paragon, smaller choices I go Renegade.)
My main preference are Soldiers, Adepts, and Vanguards. I might eventually enjoy an Infiltrator, but I haven't really done much with the other three classes beyond 1 Engineer playthrough. My goal is to have a playthrough of every class for each sex of Shepard by the time ME3 comes out. Figure two Renegade, Two Paragon, A Renegon, and a Paragade for each.
Anyways, got stuff to do.

I have 4:
My 'main' main Shep is Earthborn/War Hero (Soldier): Has more whit than Bugs Bunny, knows how to play multiple cards to get ahead, and saving everyone is just a bonus. Space cowboy.
Next Shep is Colonist/Ruthless (Vanguard): After losing everything around him, he believes he wasn't strong enough to save everyone. He has focused every ounce of his being on revenge and in the process has lost himself. Now believes everything should have a foundation in strength and vengeance. A war mongering avenger.
Next Shep is Colonist/War Hero (Adept): After he lost everything, he doesn't want to see it happen again, has dedicated every fiber of his being into saving other colonies in hopes of not losing his humanity to vengeance and hate.
My most recent Shep I created is Colonist/Sole Survivor (Infiltrator): After surviving the worst the galaxy has to offer with no one by his side he doesn't want to risk getting close to people, especially those that are under his command in fear of losing it all again, so he acts tough to push people away. Doesn't realize or care that he has a destiny. Slowly starts to get close to his crew, only to lose most of them again. Gets the job done with prejudice efficiency, nothing more, nothing less. Strong but silent type.
I love how many options you have for role playing in this game, it's absurdly entertaining...kinda makes you feel like a director, haha.

Six Shepards, 12 variables (only differences being fate of Council). Note, all of the male Shepards are Sheploo, just because I don't have the time nor inclination to deal with a ****ty character creation screen. The female faces are slightly less painful, but that's not saying much.
Default Shepard : Need I explain more?
Laura Shepard: Colonist/Sole Survivor/ Infiltrator
John Shepard: Spacer/War Hero/Soldier
Sarah Shepard: Spacer/War Hero/Soldier
John Shepard: Colonist/Ruthless/ Infiltrator
Alexandra Shepard: Earthborn/War Hero/Soldier

Adelheid Shepard: Colonist and Ruthless.
I like to imagine her having a few screws loose and a chip on her shoulder from her background. =)

Earthborn/Sole Survivor
My favourite. He is a bit rough and he is Paragade, just a human. Not a ruthless bastard or all-goodie war hero.

Earthborn/War Hero as a Paragon is my personal canon. From zero to hero, you know what I mean?
...Great, now the good ol' song from Hercules Disney cartoon is stuck in my head.

Earthborn/ Sole Survivor. I like to think that Allen Shepard's whole life has been about rising above the bad situations and showing people that no matter how hard life is, you always have a choice. Paragon4L.

I'm a ruthless colonost on one, the buther of Torfan! And a earthborn sole survivor on the other, on both I am paragade though. Albeit I made different kind of choices.

I always go for sole survivor, I like that one. And whenever I can I tell people who comment on Akuze that it is none of their business or to show some respect. My Shepard was severely scarred by that whole experience
For the other part I have mostly picked colonist or spacer. I prefer colonist, but along with the sole survivor choice it kind of gives Shep a victim-label which can feel as a bit much.
When it comes to class I prefer playing as a biotic and usually pick adept or vanguard. Have done some playthroughs as soldier, but wasn't as much fun as flinging people in the air. Never tried any of the more tech-focused classes like engineer though. Almost always go for the paragon path, I am having a hard time treating people like dirt in computer games. I tell myself that I will be a jerk, but always end up being the nicest girl on the block, doing all kinds of silly quests and running around half the world to fetch anything that may help people.

I have two Sheps, both FemSheps.
Raith Shepard: Spacer/Warhero (Infiltrator) This is my main.
Jessica Shepard: Spacer/Sole Survivor (Vanguard)
I like the spacer background the most, it just isn't as depressing as the other two. Both are paragon also.

Depends on if you want to be a paragon or renegade
Paragon
With me I go for colonist seems to fit in the superhero idea of seeing something horrific and wanting to make sure something like that never happens again to people (and in a way it suits ME2 even more due to the story in ME2 (will not say because of this being no spoilers allowed)
And of course war hero I like the praises my character get for his actions suits the whole thing of him doing the impossible throughout his career in the military.
Renegade (I never really do renegade as it is)
i pick earth born (being brought up around violence and crime which naturally would skew your idea of right and wrong) and makes him seem like he has seen the worse humanity has to offer
and ruthless because renegades tend to do it the spectre way (by doing the objective no matter the cost) and this would suite some of the decisions you can make during the game
But it just depends on how you feel shepherd should be brought up but those are the two id use for whether a paragon or renegade

My main, Douglas Shepard, is an Earthborn Sole Survivor.
Earthborn: ironically ended up developing a strong morality from growing up in the seedy underbelly of Earth. He's also very good at dealing with crooks and criminals.
Sole Survivor: while some people would shut themselves away from others after losing so much in a single night, my Shepard does the opposite- he forms extremely strong bonds with his crew and subconsciously uses them as an emotional crutch to avoid falling apart from PTSD.
Surviving Akuze also shows that he's stupidly hard to kill, not just because he's such a skilled fighter (though that's certainly a factor) but because of his unbreakable will to live.

My favorite Shepard is a Colonist Ruthless.
He is a Vanguard.
His alignment is mostly Renegade, but he makes some Paragon choices sometimes.
The incident on Torfan was fueled by a thirst for revenge rather than malice, and he felt bad afterwards (for his unit. Screw the batarians).
Not a bad guy, but definitely not a good one.
I had a Soldier that was an Earthborn Ruthless, and he was straight-up Renegade. I imagined him like a redneck, who is deeply nationalistic, violent and xenophobic.
As for Paragon, I have a female Shepard that is a Colonist War Hero (I really like the Colonist background) and an Adept. She is mostly an exemplar person, but she holds some resentment towards batarians, and has some difficulty feeling sympathy for others because the episode on Mindoir has hardened her very much, but she tries hard and is ultimately a good person.
