Of the two choices (mercenaries/smugglers), which is the more ethical/moral? I know that neither are particularly good... but I'm not sure which I should choose...

Personally I'd say Athenril since she is basically a thief that sells all they can. But she isn't a paid murderer or a slaver. Meanwhile Meeran is a mercenary who doesn't care what he's doing as long as he paid. This includes murder no matter the reason as long as they are paid.

edited to add.

Siding with meeran nets some gold and more xp though. You can get 10 frienship from Aveline if you have her threaten the vendor for Athenril though.

Well if you talk to them you'd find that out for the most part.

Athenril. She only steals from people and sells it. She isn't in it for murder or slavers.

Plus, she's hot. That should be reason enough.

Unless you have a thing for balding mercenary men.

During my first playthrough, I chose Athenril - mainly because her initiation was to have Hawke hassle/kill the shady merchant. And having just watched said shady merchant cheat a refugee, I felt that he deserved a good thrashing.

I'm not certain that sound thrashings are necessarily motivated by morality though. A whole different argument there.

Odd thing is that Aveline expresses approval in siding with Meeran initially, but then changes her mind.
Meeran says something to the effect of "Anyone messes with us they´re toast", she says "Makes sense", then when you´re sent to dole out aforementioned vengeance she disagrees.
Her disagreeing would have made more sense if she hadn`t just expressed agreement 2 minutes ago.

I believe he says "anyone screws up with us? They pay." Carver would say "Makes sense." followed by Aveline saying the same. But yes she doesn't like people taking the law into their own hands. But you can get 5g for killing those guys and more exp than Athenril's quest. But in that one you are just making a guy own up to his business deal with Athenril.

I pick the elf because Meeran seems to have you kill people. However if you pick him first, then let the guy go (you fight a few of his men) - then go to Athenril, you get to fight Meeran later in Act 1. I don't know what happens if you betray her - possibly she comes after you, too?

I think the idea is that The Red Iron seems like a legitimate mercenary company, at least in the first part of the game, while Athenril is still breaking the law. To Aveline that's probably what colored her opinion of them.

I think Athenriel is the better of the two, especially since she has standards in comparison to Meeran. The Red Iron doesn't care about the facts of the situation or who gets hurted as a result of their clients' actions, only that they get paid.

I guess I'm a bad guy. I always pick Meeran.  Smuggling just seems too shady...

I think the main thing is that you can get friendship from aveline during the Athenril quest. You can get rivarly for siding with the mercenaries. So you can base it more on that. Though the 5g looted during Meeran's quest is pretty nice.

Not always.  If you tell your target that you just want to get into the city (implying that maybe he could be your sponsor instead of Meeran--although of course it doesn't work), you won't get rivalry from Aveline.  The key is to try for a non-violent solution first.

On top of that, it's not like friendship with Aveline is super difficult to obtain.

I pick Meeran so I can get the coin. That means maybe one less reused cave mission I have to do to have the money to start the deep roads. If the game was more varied, I'd probably go smuggler instead.

I support Athenril. Mercenary work makes you little more than a thug, beating people up and stealing their lunch money (or emptying their guts, whichever). Also, in his assignment, you're told to kill a noble. Even if Meeran will grease some palms and make this unseen, it seems a poor way to enter the city. And for someone who wants to stay under the radar (being an apostate or having an apostate sister) the smugglers seem to be the smarter move, in my book. You're getting in with a group that sticks to the shadows and is not likely to draw attention to itself while the Coatrie is the local big name.

Aveline didn't get any rivalry with me when I sided with Meeran but that is probably because I grilled that guy I was sent to kill before I killed him and found out the reason he was on Meeran's badside. The man had betrayed Meeran for money and caused the deaths of a bunch of his men. I think Aveline is convinced by that that he deserves to die.

I generally choose Meeran because he does appear more legitimate and then end up opposing him when he later gets nasty with that noble who is trying to help the fereldan refugees.

They're pretty much equal in the morality department if you ask me.

I go for Meeran first. Get the cash..er...bribe.....

Meeran is not amused & walks off.

Off to Athenril I go and watch Aveline give that merchant what he deserves.

More coin to spend, everyone's happy!

I'm pretty certain that kid volunteered for the job so he could provide for his sisters. It was his only option at the time.

Athenril may hire fifteen year old boys, but Meeran would kill the boy, if the coin is right.

Besides... Athenril is one of the hottest elves in the game. Posted Image

If you're a female mage, it's the elf girl all the way: she gets you a green jacket(which my Hawke wears for the rest of the game), while Meeran gives her a horrible yellowish-orange one, which clashes with her eyes terribly.

that's pretty much the most important factor. I always side with Athenril because I want to have a relationship with her. Seriously that's what I thought on my first playthrough, that Year 1 would let me have a relationship with her.

In fact, if you want to see an Athenril fanfic me and Fieryeel wrote where Hawke is together with Athenril and Merrill, there's a thread with it.

If you take the merchants bribe and then do meerans killin you end up with even more. You only get the 2g bribe from the noble but you can get the 2g bribe from the merchant and then 5g pay from meeran.

Also if you take the bribe from either one the other side will attack you at some point (meeran in lowtown night, athenril outside of the blooming rose at night) cause neither of them likes being screwed over.

Meerin! I would rather be 'surrounded by rough men' who value my skills than have a Biatch for a boss.Posted Image
