That's the other fact why I can't work for Meeran. The Meeran/Bethany fanfic I read ruined that path forever. Posted Image

Meeran for me. Mercenary work at least has an air of legitimacy and it's not technically breaking any laws, which helps avoid unwanted attention. Plus it just makes more sense for a warrior Hawke (I seem to be in the minority on these forums in not "canonically" playing a rogue or a mage).

I'm pretty sure murder is against the law, even in Kirkwall, and the missions you get from Meeran are "murder this guy who screwed us" and then in act 1 "murder this random Lord guy"

Accusing gentle Meeran of a misdeed? Lies! Lies and slander!

We're all legitimate businessmen in the Red Iron.

Of course there's always this for my alternate rogue FemHawkes (I seem to have an inordinate number of those - my only current male character is a mage who hasn't made it out of Lothering because I don't want to watch Bethany die).

Athenril may hire fifteen year old boys, but Meeran would kill the boy, if the coin is right.

Besides... Athenril is one of the hottest elves in the game. Posted Image

So would Athenril...and she would apparently kill him for free. The boy is terrified of Athenril coming after him if he leaves.

I'm
pretty certain that kid volunteered for the job so he could provide for
his sisters. It was his only option at the time.

And... she still hires him... to do her dirty work... instead of telling him about the farms that are always looking for hands. Great standards, those.

Athenril would murder him if he runs away with her "merchandise". Pretty common tactic for criminals to do that. Setting an example and so on.
Meeran would murder him in the second somebody pays him for it. There is a difference between those two, in my view at least.

And in my view it makes them morally equal... as in they are both rather morally bankrupt :wizard:

that's pretty much the most important factor. I always side with Athenril because I want to have a relationship with her. Seriously that's what I thought on my first playthrough, that Year 1 would let me have a relationship with her.

In fact, if you want to see an Athenril fanfic me and Fieryeel wrote where Hawke is together with Athenril and Merrill, there's a thread with it.

Are you saying your Hawke couldn't have a relationship with Meeran? :P

you're assuming she even knew about the farms. Athenril's work pays well. Do it right and you get paid a good sum. Do it wrong and you get.... dead. I blame the kid for getting involved with smugglers. I place no blame on Athenril.

Plus, I love Athenril. I want Male Hawke/Merrill/Athenril to be an actual option in the gamePosted Image

I pick the elf because Meeran seems to have you kill people. However if you pick him first, then let the guy go (you fight a few of his men) - then go to Athenril, you get to fight Meeran later in Act 1. I don't know what happens if you betray her - possibly she comes after you, too?

She does, with a few pitiful street thugs. And she looked like such a bright girl.

Athenril is probably the less ruthless choice, but there's more coin in it if you betray her. Sorry, elf chick.

do both. Seriously though, the best payoff is to start Meeren's task, take the bribe, fight the mercs, return to him, at which point he'll vow "revenge!". Then blithely take Athenril's task. The mage robe you get when siding with her is much more pretty, IMO. ;)

Athenril has been in Kirkwall much longer than Hawke and Hawke knew about the farms. Pretty sure Athenril would know. I blame Athenril for hiring desperate kids who have no place in her world ^_^

If you don't get a cross class combo going with a warrior, that's not very impressive.

No Hawke only suggested he look for a farm. suggesting he look for a farm to take him in doesn't necessarily mean Hawke knew for certain they were there (though a country without farms is really hard to believe).

As for who's to blame, we shall agree to disagree. The kid knew what he was signing up for, so it's his fault entirelyPosted Image.

Besides, who's to say Athenril didn't try to convince him to just find some other work and the kid persisted very annoyingly because he needed to provide for his sisters? Athenril isn't heartless. She's a sweet, beautiful, and witty elven womanPosted Image

I think the idea is that The Red Iron seems like a legitimate mercenary company, at least in the first part of the game, while Athenril is still breaking the law. To Aveline that's probably what colored her opinion of them.

I don't think the law in Kirkwall allows the killing of nobles... no matter how much false info they give.

He said up front that " anyone who screws with us, we mess 'em up ". doesn't seem the red iron puts much stock in the law. just a guess.

It doesn't really take much to figure out that working with smugglers can be dangerous.

though this is taking place in Kirkwall, where the chance of finding a citizen who is actually sane is 1 in 689020389204. So maybe this kid was another unfortunate victim of Kirkwall being the gateway to the abyss.

Mercenaries don't break laws in Thedas? What about the Flint company, or the idiots from Denerim you're supposed to get rid of?

Obviously some groups must have principles though. :bandit:
