Meerin! I would rather be 'surrounded by rough men' who value my skills than have a Biatch for a boss.
That's the other fact why I can't work for Meeran. The Meeran/Bethany fanfic I read ruined that path forever.

I'm pretty sure murder is against the law, even in Kirkwall, and the missions you get from Meeran are "murder this guy who screwed us" and then in act 1 "murder this random Lord guy"

I go Athenril then you can RP, in your head, some kinda ill gotten side-nookie with your Knife-eared hotty boss.

Which include hiring fifteen year olds to do her dirty work
Athenril may hire fifteen year old boys, but Meeran would kill the boy, if the coin is right.
Besides... Athenril is one of the hottest elves in the game.
And... she still hires him... to do her dirty work... instead of telling him about the farms that are always looking for hands. Great standards, those. The Ethereal Writer Redux wrote...

pretty certain that kid volunteered for the job so he could provide for
his sisters. It was his only option at the time.

So would Athenril...and she would apparently kill him for free. The boy is terrified of Athenril coming after him if he leaves.

Athenril would murder him if he runs away with her "merchandise". Pretty common tactic for criminals to do that. Setting an example and so on.
Meeran would murder him in the second somebody pays him for it. There is a difference between those two, in my view at least.

that's pretty much the most important factor. I always side with Athenril because I want to have a relationship with her. Seriously that's what I thought on my first playthrough, that Year 1 would let me have a relationship with her.
In fact, if you want to see an Athenril fanfic me and Fieryeel wrote where Hawke is together with Athenril and Merrill, there's a thread with it.

Are you saying your Hawke couldn't have a relationship with Meeran?

She does, with a few pitiful street thugs. And she looked like such a bright girl.stobie wrote...
I pick the elf because Meeran seems to have you kill people. However if you pick him first, then let the guy go (you fight a few of his men) - then go to Athenril, you get to fight Meeran later in Act 1. I don't know what happens if you betray her - possibly she comes after you, too?
Athenril has been in Kirkwall much longer than Hawke and Hawke knew about the farms. Pretty sure Athenril would know. I blame Athenril for hiring desperate kids who have no place in her worldThe Ethereal Writer Redux wrote...

you're assuming she even knew about the farms. Athenril's work pays well. Do it right and you get paid a good sum. Do it wrong and you get.... dead. I blame the kid for getting involved with smugglers. I place no blame on Athenril.
Plus, I love Athenril. I want Male Hawke/Merrill/Athenril to be an actual option in the game

I think the idea is that The Red Iron seems like a legitimate mercenary company, at least in the first part of the game, while Athenril is still breaking the law. To Aveline that's probably what colored her opinion of them.

Mercenaries don't break laws in Thedas? What about the Flint company, or the idiots from Denerim you're supposed to get rid of?
Obviously some groups must have principles though.
