They're pretty much equal in the morality department if you ask me.

Athenril at least appears to have some standards.

Which include hiring fifteen year olds to do her dirty work ../../../images/forum/emoticons/lol.png

I'm
pretty certain that kid volunteered for the job so he could provide for
his sisters. It was his only option at the time.

And... she still hires him... to do her dirty work... instead of telling him about the farms that are always looking for hands. Great standards, those.

you're assuming she even knew about the farms. Athenril's work pays well. Do it right and you get paid a good sum. Do it wrong and you get.... dead. I blame the kid for getting involved with smugglers. I place no blame on Athenril.

Plus, I love Athenril. I want Male Hawke/Merrill/Athenril to be an actual option in the gameImage IPB

Athenril has been in Kirkwall much longer than Hawke and Hawke knew about the farms. Pretty sure Athenril would know. I blame Athenril for hiring desperate kids who have no place in her world ^_^

No Hawke only suggested he look for a farm. suggesting he look for a farm to take him in doesn't necessarily mean Hawke knew for certain they were there (though a country without farms is really hard to believe).

As for who's to blame, we shall agree to disagree. The kid knew what he was signing up for, so it's his fault entirelyImage IPB.

Though that kid is f**** creepy, since BioWare seemed to simply use a bigger 'child model' for the older kids -- not to mention that strange deep voice, ugh! -- I don't think he had much of a choice ( like he said he didn't ), and exploiting children to perform illegal acts of contraband, especially sending them into dangerous territory where they might get killed, would probably be rated pretty high on the 'child abuse' scale.

Meeran for me. Mercenary work at least has an air of legitimacy and it's not technically breaking any laws, which helps avoid unwanted attention. Plus it just makes more sense for a warrior Hawke (I seem to be in the minority on these forums in not "canonically" playing a rogue or a mage).

Mercenaries don't break laws in Thedas? What about the Flint company, or the idiots from Denerim you're supposed to get rid of?

Obviously some groups must have principles though. :bandit:

Yes, those. I forgot about them...

Ha! The entire quest shows that he really had no idea what he was getting into :P

It doesn't really take much to figure out that working with smugglers can be dangerous.

though this is taking place in Kirkwall, where the chance of finding a citizen who is actually sane is 1 in 689020389204. So maybe this kid was another unfortunate victim of Kirkwall being the gateway to the abyss.

He's fifteen. Kids don't think about such things. That's what adults are for, to think: "gee, maybe this isn't the right thing for him to be doing."

well, when you become the sole provider, a teenager's outlook on things becomes vastly different. Lack of parents means he becomes essentially the parent. When you're trying to survive because you have no other family left, you stop being a kid and start growing up.

I'm sticking with my "Kirkwall made him an idiot" theory and not pinning the blame on Athenril though.

Of the two choices (mercenaries/smugglers), which is the more ethical/moral? I know that neither are particularly good... but I'm not sure which I should choose...

It's a toss up so I went with my character class. If Hawke was a warrior, it was Meeran. Rogues and my apostate mage went with Athenril as it was keeping with their character.

However there are consequences later in the game. Both will give you a job after you leave them. However both of the jobs will put you in a moral quandry. With Athenril, you can do what is right and lie to her and get away with it. I never could find a way to do the right thing without having to fight it out with Meeran later on.

Don't kill Harriman. Lie to Meeran and say that Harriman was long gone by the time you got there. Meeran has never sought VENGEANCE against me for this.

I did that once but later Meeran instead of Merrill showed up at the estate at Night. I - had Bodahn show him out.

So... Meeran wanted to have sexy times with you and cuddle afterwards, while he is wearing a corset? That's.... disturbing.

This choice was really hard for me initially. After having played the game through a few times, I've decided it's better for my "good" characters to ally with Athenril. Not having to walk up to someone and say hello and then butcher him out of hand is a good start.

My Mage went with Meeran just because Carver seemed to like him enough. But that's only been 1 play through. All the others end up with Athenril. The way she reacts when she sees Hawke in Act 1 I can't help but get the vibe that she's upset about his leaving, and not just because its been bad for business. I don't know about love but there was likely a fling in my mind.

I went with Mereen, he actually seems to care about his men. Athenril's first quest is about getting cash and the second getting her goods back and she will attack you if you give them to a starving family. Mereen's first quest is getting revenge on a guy who is responsible for the death of some of his men and In act 1 he still pays you for getting Gustav back even if you don't kill Harimman

I went with Athenril. For one thing, she did seem a bit more ethical than the killer-for-hire, though that's not saying much. What really made up my mind was the once-over look Meeran gave Bethany.
