I tried doing a search but nothing immediate popped out.

Was curious if anyone knew how often a mage learned a new spell? Once per level? Every other level?

Just curious as I'm trying to plan out a mage type character.

The Mage-Spells are their substitute for not having Talents.
As Warriors and Rogues get every Lvl Up 1 Talent Point, it seems
logical, for Mages to get 1 Spell per Level.

One spell per level, but there are spellpower requirements.

Can someone explain to me how spellpower works? I was playing DA:J and obviously saw that a lot; I just couldn't figure out how it affects the Mage's spell-casting.

spellpower is based on your magic Strength and number of times you can cast a spell (Mana) is based on your willpower Strength.....the higher the number the better.......high magic = more DPS and ability to overcome resistances....high willpower= ability to cast more spells before having to recharge your mana also good for withstanding adverse effects

1 Spell/Talent per level.

It has been said that we will be able to obtain more Spells/Talents/Attributes/etc. IG, perhaps due to story progression or items we find.

Many spells have a Magic requirement (i.e. if your Magic attribute is 20 and a spell requirees 27 you cannot learn that spell until you increase your Magic attribute to the necessary amount).

Spellower - It and it alone seems to determine the potency of one's spells in regards to damage. It likely does not increase the duration of spell effects. You could think of it as the Mage's version of Strength with their spells being their attacks (i.e. Spellpower increases damage, just like Strength does for a Warrior in melee combat).

In DA: J you can hover over the Spellpower icon on the character sheet and it will tell you what percentages damage for your spells are increased, among other things.

Thanks Dennis.

After posting that I went to the Wiki and found a thorough explanation of Spellpower: http://dragonage.wik...wiki/Spellpower

[Edit]
Oops! You beat me to it, Aidron! Thanks!

If DA: Journeys, insider reviews and videos are anything to go by..

A Mage will get 2 spell selections at lvl 1.

One spell for every level after that. (So at level 4, you should have 5 spells).

Mages "MAY" or "MAY NOT" also get an extra spell at odd levels, aka 4th, 8th, or maybe 5th, 10th, etc. This is mostly a rumor and I've seen nothing so far to substantiate it.

As of now Mages have four spell groups with four talent lines and four spell choices for each line. Add in the Mage class line (staff bolt, spell mastery) and one line of 4 talents for each Mage specialization and you have a grand total of

Spells = 64
(Primal, Creation, Spirit, Entropy)

Other Talents / Subclass abilities = 20

Total of 84 talents. Keep in mind that through the course of the game you are likely to get at least 20 talent points to customize your character with, so you should have a great deal of versatility in how you build your character. Enjoy!

P.S. Downloading the character creator and reviewing the spells available during character creation is a great way to get a preview on some of these talents.

Just dont mix up Skills with the Spells!
For them you will get other points( but just every 2,3 or 4 levels; isnt still clear)

I'm not mixing skills and spells. You get a very limited number of skill points from what I understand (partial credit owed to our UK friend who answered questions on these forums after the Wardens Quest event). Besides which, only certain skills are even of interest to Mages - namely Combat Training to resist spell interruption and possibly herbalism to be more hogwartsy.

The 84 talents I mentioned above are actual class abilities and talents - you cannot get them as a Warrior or Rogue, so far as I know. Of the 4 subclasses you can specialize in as a Mage, each comes with a single line of 4 talents, totaling 16 talents. Add another 4 talents for the Mage's archtype line - from Staff Mastery to Spell Mastery. That is 20.

The other 64 spells come from the Mage's 4 main schools - Primal, Creation, Spirit, and Entropy.

Seems to give you many possiblities but also restraining you.

Lets say you hit lvl 20 at the end of the game.

You should than have, how much? About 23 points in that?

So thinking about maxing Spell/Staff Mastery and maxing at least 1 specialization leaves

you just with the option of maxing one group in every one of the 4 Magic schools.

(but it seems that even first tier spells will be used later on, because their effectiveness depends

mostly on your spellpower).

This smellls like many tweaking will be possible :)

Really like that you are so constrained :) Makes re playability and it matters what you chose.

Drakensang was a great game and had many choices, even more than DA when it came to lvling, but that was destroyed in because in the late game you could be good at almost everything.

There are also specialization points and skill books that grant skill points.
