Just started a new run on this game.  Everytime I fire off a round or two I find myself pressing X.  Yet it if far less affective (or far more so) then in ME2.

Gameplay changes are sneaky like that.

Mh don't know if I got you right on this, but you're saying the Ammo System of ME1 was worse than that of 2? Well, of course taste of gameplay may differ, but for me, ME1 had clearly the better system, you had to play more tactical in a fight vs. a big bunch of enemys, you needed to think about when to fire, where, how long etc.

And it was just feeling more futuristic that weapons had no ammo limit (what should be a realistic thing even in the real future) but instead you had that cooler system.

So I think, even if the way of sudden change of weapon design in ME2 had been explained good in the ME2 codex entrys, I still would prefer the ammo system from ME1, not seeing it as "stupid".

Hah, welcome to the club. Sounds like you are me from last week. Reloading is second nature to me, makes ME1 feel wrong for quite a while.

Why is that the case with ME1 and not ME2? You'd still have to decide when to shoot and who your priority is on ME2 to the same extent, just instead of having to be aware of overheating on ME1 (well I say that, but half way through the game you didn't) you'd have to be aware of needing to reload as well as the amount of remaining heatsinks you have at your disposal instead.

Well, I probably missed the spot, in general all I wanted to say is that it felt way more futuristic than this old fashioned ammo reload system and that's what made it feel more strategic for me and didn't felt so much like a shooter but more like a rpg what it should have.

A combination of the 2 would be the best, IE let it cool down when possible but flush coolant through it during TSHHTF type situations.

Wouldn't be such a massive change then between 1 and 2, and would make the combat more interesting IMO.

All you had to do in ME1 was get frictionless materials and you could never stop firing, that is not tactical at all. Stop kidding yourself.
