Console gamers will have access to a whole world of Skyrim user generated content if Bethesda gets its way.

Although making mods for Elder Scrolls games will likely stay the exclusive purview of PC gamers, actually playing them might not be. Bethesda says that it is keen to get console gamers playing the mods for  alongside their PC brethren.

Bethesda's Todd Howard said that the content made with the Skyrim Creation Kit would work on consoles just as well as it would the PC; it was, after all, the tool that Bethesda had used to make the game. The problem, Howard said, was that there wasn't an avenue for delivering the content to console gamers yet, but that Bethesda was
talking with Microsoft and Sony in order to try and make it happen. Even if these efforts were successful however, he didn't think it would be something that would be up and running in time for the game's launch in November.

""We'd like to see it happen," he said. "Because it works, it's how we made the game. I think it's something really cool about what we do, but 90% of our audience is on the consoles, so 90% of our audience can't even see this thing. So if we can solve that we'd like to."

Mods for previously Elder Scrolls games have ranged from simple cosmetic changes like more attractive maps and new eye colors, to new items and equipment, to complete overhauls of systems and mechanics. If Bethesda is able to bring mods to consoles, it would not only bring console and PC gamers closer together, it would significantly increase the scope and longevity of Skyrim.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim comes out for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on November 11th.

Good luck Todd, you'll need it.

I hope this happens, the rage of PC gamers will be entertaining. (No offence to PC gamers, I know the majority of you won't care or even welcome the change but a small minority will be crying about this)

Why would anybody complain about it?

Because popular modders will be bombarded by console fans wanting them to "port" their mods?

There's no reason that this can't happen. Will it happen, though? Well, we'll just have to wait it out.

Portal 2 is cross platform between PS3 and PC thanks to Steam. No reason why this couldn't happen if they can get past the Microsoft/Sony money machine.

Please, please, please, please Santa!

I'm not sure why people would complain but there will be complaints, its sad I know but people will. If you go onto the link there are already some people saying that it shouldn't happen and mods should stay on PC.
Maybe some PC gamers feel special as they can have mods while console gamers can't.

It could be interesting if they set up some kind of app store for mods, or at least a way to support paypal donations to modders.

A hard working modder who creates something brilliant should have some way to get compensated if 5 million people download his work.

Definitely! I wouldn't want to be forced to pay unlike PCers but I'd totally be down to donate a couple to some exceptional modders.

I'm betting if Sony and Microsoft do allow the mods there will be a lot of strings attached.  Remember many mods ended up being "Adult oriented" in nature, just go to any TES mod site for proof,  these types of mods may cause pause for MS and Sony.

Microsoft also like being more in control of the content provided on XBoxLive which means that each individual mod will need to be cleared and MS may even charge a fee for using there servers (Remember Live is all one closed dedicated system si MS decides what is what, just look at the Left 4 Dead content that was charged to 360 players but was free on PC)

The only way I could see it happening is if Microsoft and Sony somehow charged for the mods. This would bring an evil grin to my face.

I don't see console modding being free. There's no way console company's will allow third party software on their consoles without being paid for it. They aren't stupid enough to pass up a way to make money.

Moon's right. Console ports of mods would require a dedicated hardware console not produced by sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo. if done with existing hardware consoles, then Hardware manufactoria will be charging us billions of dollars to get our mods cleared for the network download.

This would be pretty hot for consoles, but I don't think Microsoft is going to allow it. If they do, it will surely be paid accounts only. No way it will be free.

I'd imagine most mods shouldn't need porting, save for the more exotic types such as OBSE's likely successor--though I imagine that sort of thing will be impossible to port anyway.
