classes with neat characteristics, great potential of things/places/mysteries unknown to be discovered, wide range of different races, each with its own features and political standings... One has to wonder, how come there isnt a pen-and-paper, tabletop based RPG book on Mass Effect?

Anyone ever heard something about it, or at least could suggest a good system to make an adaptation?

Don't know of anything official, but there's a few unofficial ones out there. Here's one (I haven't tried it, but it's the first result): http://www.bozark.co.../downloads.html

In all honesty, which system you'd want to adapt really depends on if you're looking for more of a tactical rpg or a storyteller rpg. For tactical, the old Mechwarrior system (they've renamed it something else now and I can't remember what, sorry) could be modified sufficiently as it had a decent tactical system. Revamping the character creation to accommodate the various races would probably be the biggest challenge there. I've also heard that GURPS is a good system for modifying, by I've never played with it, so I can't guarantee anything there.

I use mini6 as the base system for it. It's a work in progress but feel free to pester me if you want to discuss it.

I'd venture a guess that something like D20 Future would be a logical choice. I know it had it's own SRD, which basically gave all the core rules for free. Wizards of the Coast might still have it, but I'm sure you could find it online.

I'm a veteran d20 player but in this case chose mini6 because it is far far better for running a game online (people don't have to travel so much, you can play more often, etc.). It's still slow compared to sitting around a table, but it's much more rapid-fire for combat, some things actually make more sense, and the GM is fairly free to call things as they fit the scenario a bit like how the storyteller system works. Playing d20 almost necessitates the use of figures and careful maps in my experience. That said, I'm sure you could use d20 just fine to make an ME type game.
