Can all abominations hide their "true" form?

I sort of assume that the transformation to walking meatball happens during times of stress when a demon unleashes it's full power and the body can't take it anymore.

I say sort of because in game whenever we see abominations they just run around and punch people instead of being the unholy avatars of death and destruction in the lore.

Actually it may be simplier than many of you think. All the abominations I've seen that can disquise themselves in normal form seem to be abominations that were willingly invited in either by trickery or bargining. Those that that were forced in and/or those that took advantage of a mage in great stress don't seem to be able to.

I am not sure I'm right, but that's the pattern I've seen anyway.

I have a sneaking suspicion that abominations assume whatever forms 3D animators give them, and that they may, for some mysterious reason, take on new forms in future games. Of course, then you'll have a lot of whining fans complaining how the new designs are AWFUL compared to the holy greatness that is DA:O.

Or are only Pride Abominations like Uldred and Grace capable of it?

It depends on the spirit and how crazy they are. Some people like hard rules, but spirits and demons do not all work the same... either that or there is a pattern that none of you have nobody has discerned yet. :)

I call BS on that in one respect: Someone must have picked up on it to some extent. These forums are ginormous speculation factories. Fire enough shots in the dark, you're bound to hit something. :P

But, just in case it is something really out there...

Possession characteristics might depend on: amount of fiber in the diet, how tight underwear is, peanut allergies, ingrown toe nails, blood relation to Andraste's accountant, lyrium suppositories, phobias involving crossdressing, whether or not  the possessing spirits owe back taxes...

Everyone quoting anyone on what Flemeth is is assuming that anyone that is not Flemeth has accurate information on what she is.

Morrigan had the best shot at such a claim, but she's far from certainly correct.

I likely think that we don't have any idea what she actually is. Or she could be a Dreamer abomination of a Shiftiness demon/spirit.

And the abomination pattern is definitely related to the Fibinacci sequence.

What type of abomination was Evelina? I think her name just came up as "Abomination" after the cutscene. She had already become an abomination prior to us finding her because those two kids say she "changed".

Not totally true.

If u play DAO Shale's quest, when Kitty forced herself into Amelia's body, Amelia stayed as a little girl, but with Kitty's mind in control.

We don't know for certain, as you say it just calls her "Abomination."  I don't think she was the type to fall prey to pride though.  Rage or desire seems most likely to me.

Sucks, because I thought the "it's a pride demon" thing had some merit.  Pride demons are the most intelligent and the most powerful, it'd make sense if hiding their abominationness (I'm SO sorry for what I just did to you, English language) was exclusive to them.  Really though, we should compile a list of known abominations and their circumstances to see if we can see a pattern.  Probably a fruitless effort though, since DG said no one has figured it out yet and he obviously hasn't heard every fan's conjecture, the logical conclusion is that we don't have enough pieces of the puzzle to see what it is yet.  We've just got some border pieces with green crap on them.  Is that grass?  <sigh>

Probably a Desire Demon, since she had a great desire to protect those orphans.

It seems to me most of them come out when they have been found out or close to being found out and then threatened.

I nearly let her possess Amalia just to shut that girl up. The hardest part of solving that puzzle was the continual "Daddy doesn't like cats, but he hasn't met Kitty! Do you like daffodils? I love Daffodils. Daddy doesnt...." ugh I hated that girl..

and by "that none of you have nobody has discerned yet." you mean  "WE AT BIOWARE have not "written" yet because WE AT BIOWARE do not know if we want to define such a thing."

So how exactly does a templar know if a mage has turned after his Harrowing if a transformation isn't necessary in all cases?

I'm going to guess it has something to do with why they use a rage demon for the test. They're the stupid ones and not noted for clever planning.

edit: nevermind. I think Mouse was Pride and the real test.

high stress situations could perhaps force the transformation. as has been mentioned, demons don't understand why the world doesn't shape to their will so when they first possess someon the meatball look could be involuntary for the first x-minutes.

If you look at the abominations we've seen, they don't come out until retreat is impossible.

I wonder if it matters whether the Fade creature that inhabits them started out as a spirit or a demon. Wynne's sidekick is clearly a beneficial spirit, so no veiny face. Anders'... well, Justice started out as a good guy, anyway.

Maybe a better question would have been why they seem to almost never cast spells?

They just run at you and swing their arms about like angry drunks.

A lot of the demons you run into don't cast spells either. Shades, corpses (inhabited by demons), etc. It's only the clever ones, arcane horrors and desire demons, that cast spells.

That change to "nobody" would imply it's something even Mr.Gaider himself didn't take time to define, yet. As such, no amount of forum speculation is going to technically hit target that doesn't yet exist.

I'd say Desire and Pride are the most likely for hiding Monsieur le Fleshblob Tumorstein's appearance. Although, what about Feynriel? If he's possessed by Torpor, does he retain his elf-human look around Act 3? I never let Torpor possess him, so I'm not sure.

Then again, maybe it has to do with how ancient the spirit is. The older they are, the more powerful they are. You know, with great age comes great wisdom.
